January Rides/Events

I was going to start posting rides/events on the calendar instead of in a list in this section, but the 2010 calendar isn't accessible. Whenever it's accessible, I'll post future rides. I don't have anything for January though.

I don't see any schedule for the Saturday rides. A group of Slow Spokes riders have been riding regularly through December. I would like to see these rides continue as these have become rides to maintain our cycling tone and skills through the winter. (I confess, I hate the trainer).
This weekend is not a good choice as an example because the temperature will barely creep above freezing. However, I would like to see us continue with the Saturday rides out of Salt Box Village, especially with the arrival of All Star Bikes. Is there some way to keep these rides going under the umbrella of Slow Spokes.

I agree that it would be nice if the Saturday Saltbox Village rides continued. Several months ago, I posted that I was uncomfortable continuing to post the ride announcements since my schedule has not allowed me to participate very often. No one offered to take over posting those rides, and apparantely, no one noticed that I had not posted an announcement for a Saturday ride since December 12.

Those who are wish to continue to ride from Saltbox Village on Saturday mornings should do so. I think it should be a standing ride with no designated leader. I like the ground rule that the ride happens if it is not raining and above 40 degrees.

I plan on riding through the winter as long as it is >40. I like seeing the posts and replies here because it lets me know that I will not be diving from Durham to find an empty parking lot.

Correct me if I'm wrong here in my response. Slow Spokes is a group, but its also largely a concept. Its a way of making up a ride that caters to those who are new to cycling, new to riding on the road, or for those who want to ride at some speed less than I-think-I'm-going-to-throwup pace.

If there are people who want to continue the SBV ride and want it to continue to be posted, then step up and post it in the future. If you want to make it a Slow Spokes ride then adopt the SS's no drop, lead from the back, and sweep format. Or make up the ride format that you like most.

I think the main issue here is that whoever wants the ride to continue, and plans on riding on a fairly regular basis, should be the one to put out the thread. Rick, myself, and others who lead this ride in the past cant commit to being there. It doesn't make any sense for us to continue to post the thread if we aren't there for the ride.

Correct and this concept continues only if those who benefitted contribute in some way to keep it going. It's unrealistic to expect the same few people to carry the group indefinitely. Priorities may change over time making it difficult to manage your personal affairs much less volunteer your time to other things.

So Dark Helmet, Goodnessoffit, CarlosQ or others who benefitted from the Slow Spokes concept, consider volunteering your time to post the weekly ride announcement as Rick did.

I am looking to do a century this month. There is one on the 23rd from the Bicycle Chain in Apex at 9 am, but I cannot make that date. The only days that work for me are the 16 and 30. Is anyone interested in a long ride averaging 14-16 mph?
