Post Sunday, 6/14/09 Slow Spokes Ride from Harris Visitors Center, 8am sharp!

Hello All,

I've decided to go out on a limb and formalize the ride for this Sunday. If I make mistakes, be kind, but I think by leveraging the work of those who have gone before I can make this work for all.

Weather for Sunday currently calls for isolated thunderstorms, so we'll play it by ear. I'll be at the starting point regardless of the weather, because I know some of you aren't daunted by conditions!

Please print, sign, and bring with you, the liability waiver if this is your first 2009 ride with our group.

RSVP by Saturday, June 11, 8:00 p.m. and provide the following information:

1) Identify your route choice, 23, 40 or 63.6 miles
2) Riding pace

Please print your own cue sheet and bring it to the ride.

When: Sunday, 6/11/09, 8:00 a.m
Where:
Harris Energy and Environmental Center
3932 New Hill Holleman Road,
New Hill NC, 27562
(exit 89 off of US-1; drive approximately 1.2 miles towards Harris Lake; visitors center is on the right)

Distance - your choice of:
23 miles
40 miles
63.6 miles

Pace:
10-12 mph beginners (follows strict no drop policy)
13-15 mph (riders wait at turns for others to catch up)
16-18 mph (riders wait at turns for others to catch up)
Please watch out for others in your subgroup so no one gets dropped.

I NEED SWEEPERS AND HELPERS so that we can offer leaders for subgroups at different paces. If you are interested in helping out one of the subgroups, please send me a private message indicating your choice of distance and average speed. Those of you on the 63 miles route are on your own, but please wait-up for each other at stops and turns.

Cue Sheets – we are borrowing from the NCBC Summer Rally. The cue sheets say that there is a sag stop and have emergency numbers - please ignore those as they pertain to last summer's NCBC summer rally.

The 40 and 63 mile cue sheets list a stop at the fire station on Farrington Road...there will not be a rest stop at the fire station; however, there is a c-store just up the road at the corner of Farrington and Lystra. None of the rest stops are supported; I encourage everyone to bring some cash in case you need to purchase drinks and/or food at the rest stops.

23 mile route: http://www.ncbikeclub.org/rt07su20.pdf
40 mile route: http://www.ncbikeclub.org/rt07su40.pdf
63.6 mile route: http://www.ncbikeclub.org/rt07su62.pdf

Contact Person: Jerry Canterbury. Send me an email or private message through this site if you have any questions.

Comments:
  • Arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at 8:00am. I would like to leave on time to avoid the noontime heat!
  • There are no bathrooms at the beginning of the ride (unless you are OK with trees). There is a rest stop 15 miles into the 40 and 60 mile ride, we can use a bathroom there. The 23 mile ride has a bathroom at mile 11.
  • Beginners are welcome to join this ride. The 40 mile route in almost flat - the 23 mile route is half flat, half hills.
  • New riders should read Bicycling Hand Signals and Safety Pointers
  • If this is your first Slowspokes ride in 2009, please fill out the attached liability waiver and bring it to the ride. NCBC’s insurance company requires one on file each year for each cyclist.
  • All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge). Helmets required.
  • It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license, health insurance card (or a photo copy), emergency contact information or Road I.D. in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.

Jerry, thank you for organizing a ride so quickly after joining the group. It is much appreciated! Unfortunately, I will be making the long haul back from Tennessee on Sunday and will need to miss this one.

OK, I'm in, weather permitting. Will assist in any way needed. Will do the 23-miler.

I'll consider the 63 again especially if there are a few folks intersted in 16ish pace.

Ditto 1,000%

I regret to say that I can't make it either...

Everyone please help Jerry make this ride a success.

I'll send you the waiver list so you know who has already signed.

Thanks!

Hi Folks,

FYI, I'll be sporting a bright red Ohio State University jersey so you can find me to sign your waiver if necessary.

I personally plan to do the 23-mile route.

Weather forecast is still for isolated t-storms, I'm hopeful that they will be those late afternoon storms so we can all be off the roads before they pass through.

See ya!

I'm planning on coming for the metric. Hopefully no rain this time.
