Thanks Tracy. Registration is limited to 400 riders, 50 more than last year. Make sure you sign up before it's full. It filled up by early April last year. Here is a list of riders if you want to monitor it so you don't miss the opportunity, http://ravenrockramble.org/riders.htm

Signed up for the RRR earlier. I'm heading for the Metric right now. I wonder if you can change later (haven't looked).

Another option, a bit earlier in April:
Cycle North Carolina Spring Ride goes back to the Coast! Edenton hosted the inaugural CNC Spring Ride and has been selected to the host the 2007 event April 13-15, 2007. Historic Edenton will welcome cyclists from all over the United States for a weekend of cycling, waterfront entertainment and great food. Edenton has been a favorite of Cycle North Carolina and we are excited to revisit the “South’s Prettiest Small Town
NCDOT has a great place to find out about the larger regional rides here: http://www.ncdot.org/transit/bicycle/events/calendar/january7.html.

Just a reminder that the Raven Rock Ramble (http://ravenrockramble.org/index.html) will fill up early April. They have 264 riders (http://ravenrockramble.org/riders.htm) registered so far. If you registered, but didn't pay yet, you need to pay as soon as possible to guarantee your slot. This is the best ride in our area, lots of food, well supported SAG stops, great T-shrit. You will miss out if you don’t register early.
NOTE:
David added new intersection graphics (http://ravenrockramble.org/cs07rr62.pdf) to the cue sheets. He also needs someone who uses GPS to check the GPX files (http://ravenrockramble.org/routes.htm). If anyone has time, please do so and let me know and I can give you David’s email address to send comments. Thanks

I asked David Cole and he said you could transfer your registration to someone else. They would pick up ride packets in your name. The tax receipt is sent to you though. Maybe someone could pay you, you give them the tax receipt and they can use their check as proof of payment. Just a suggestion.
Registration is up to 416 now. David will cut it off at 430.

Hammer Nutrition has an interesting take on pre-event fueling. They advise only eating a meal three hours prior. If you can't eat at least three hours before, then they recommend no meal and just a snack (like a gel) 10 minutes before you get on the bike.
http://www.hammernutrition.com/za/HNT?PAGE=ARTICLE&ARTICLE.ID=2981
Preface by Steve Born: One of the more controversial articles in The Endurance Athlete’s Guide to Success is "The Pre-Race Meal" where, among other things, we suggest that athletes not consume food any sooner than three hours prior to the start of workout sessions or races. The information provided in the article seems to generate the most resistance and skepticism from athletes, probably because it’s a concept that they’ve never heard of before. However, both Dr. Bill and I can say that we’ve yet to have one athlete tell us that the principles outlined in the article didn’t work.
Also check "15 Simple Ways To Improve Your Athletic Performance Right Now"
http://www.hammernutrition.com/za/HNT?PAGE=ARTICLE&ARTICLE.ID=2227&OMI=10126,10071&AMI=10126&RETURN_URL=%2Fza%2FHNT%3FPAGE%3DTRAININGTIPS%26OMI %3D10126%2C10071%26AMI%3D10126&RETURN_TEXT=Performance%20Tips
13. Don't over-consume food the night before the race in the hopes of "carbo loading."
It would be nice if you could maximize muscle glycogen stores the night before the race, but human physiology doesn't work that way. Increasing and maximizing muscle glycogen stores takes many weeks of consistent training and post-workout fuel replenishment. Excess consumed carbohydrates are only going to be eliminated or stored as body fats (dead weight), so don't go overboard during those pre-race pasta feeds. Eat until you're satisfied, but not more.
13. Finish a pre-race meal three hours prior to the start of the race.
Let's assume you've been really good - you've been training hard (yet wisely) and remembering to replenish your body with adequate amounts of high quality calories as soon as possible after each and every one of your workouts. Great! You've now built up a nice 60-90 minute reservoir of premium muscle glycogen, the first fuel your body will use when the race begins. Don't blow it now by eating something an hour or two prior to the start of the race!
Do you know what happens when you eat within three hours of exercise? Your muscle glycogen stores get burned much more rapidly . . . definitely not performance-enhancing! If you're going to have a pre-race meal, you need to finish it three hours prior to the start of the race. That's the best way to top off liver glycogen stores (the goal of the pre-race meal) without screwing up how your body burns its muscle glycogen.

Does anyone recommend a particular food that works for them?
I drink 64 oz of water the day before a 50 mile ride and usually have a meal like a salad, baked potoato and a steak. That works for me. Drinking water the day before seems to make a difference.
On the day of a long ride I use endurolyte (http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=PRODUCT&CAT=ELECT&PROD.ID=4037&OMI=10104,10082,10047&AMI=10104) capsules every hour, one Cliff shot or PB & J sandwich, one pak of Cliff bloks, a bottle of Cytomax and one or two bottles of water. Before using endurolytes, I was very tired after riding 30 miles. Now I can ride longer without feeling like I need a nap afterwards.

There going to have food at the SAG stops right?
Zonda
04-29-2007, 08:54 PM
There going to have food at the SAG stops right?
At the registration area they have bagels, cream cheese, bananas and Starbuck's coffee. Starbuck's is a new sponsor this year.
Lots of food at SAG stops, Panera bagels, cream cheese, PB&J sandwiches, oatmeal cakes, bananas, water, gatorade, sodas, home baked goods (cookies, fudge, trail mix bars).
After the ride they will deliver Schlotzkey's deli sandwiches, Rudino's Pizza and have all the left over bagels, baked goods, etc. They usually run out of sandwiches and pizza if you get back too late.
What I eat/drink the day before the ride seems to affect my riding more than what I eat the day of. I was passing on what works for me.

I want to be sure that I don't bonk during the ride.... Lots of food at SAG stops, Panera bagels, cream cheese, PB&J sandwiches, oatmeal cakes, bananas, water, gatorade, sodas, home baked goods (cookies, fudge, trail mix bars). Then my suggestion would be not to change too much from the normal and just intake food at the SAG stops.

Then my suggestion would be not to change too much from the normal and just intake food at the SAG stops.
i don't know about anyone else, but i find that if i change from what i normally do during longer rides, like eat real food, that really gives me problems. i tend to get by on HEED, Endurolytes, and CarbBoom gels. occassionally, i'll eat a snickers bar if i feel really low on energy or maybe part of a pb&j that i've brought with me. haven't had the longer rides yet where i do a snickers ('cept for the ride at bjp) or pb&j yet.
the rides that jay and i've done from his house for 50mi is done on the above (H, E, & C). this is just what works for me - this close to the event, i wouldn't consider changing up anything as far as what you've been drinking/eating. you also don't want to eat too much at the sag stops because you don't want to get "filled" up on the food and not feel like you can take any hydration in.
you'll do fine!

Then my suggestion would be not to change too much from the normal and just intake food at the SAG stops.
Be very careful how much you intake at the sags. I over intook at the Frostbite Tour and had a nasty lump in my stomache during the last leg of the ride. I do best if I take in a little gatorade every 20 minutes, water as needed for hydration and small amounts of energy food every hour or so after 90 minutes. I have pretty good reserves on board at the start.
But that's just what works for me.
TracyW
04-30-2007, 05:32 PM
I guess the point is that there will be food available, unlike normal, so changing routine is not necessary. Knowing that there is more than one SAG stop makes it easier to nibble.

This is all good advice. I think I'll change my pre-ride diet only very slightly. I might have a larger breakfast early in the morning but I won't get crazy. I think the most important thing for me to do is pace myself and not go too hard too fast. Oh yeah... and think positive. Negativity is for wussy!

I want to take a photo of the group. If you want to be in the photo, meet by the registration area at 8:00 a.m.
David's current plan is to have a procession from the paved parking area to the road in front of the grassy parking lot for the ride start. With 400 riders, it will be hectic. We need to be ready to line up in our groups for the ride start by 8:15 a.m.

I'll have to look at the more detailed weather forecast sometime on Saturday. RRR certainly does seem to draw rain like a magnet.....

They've upped the chance of rain to 70% on Sunday. I think its safe to say this is going to be a washout unless you want to ride in the rain/wind.
Here's a thought.. if the weather is bad for this event every year, why not move it to a more favorable time of year? Even bumping it out 2-3 weeks in May would probably make a big difference in the weather situation.

i keep telling you it's not the event its David that is the cause of the rain I just told him that at spin cycle to He was going to move the date but from the feed back he got last year he keep it at this time
I used to attend this 5 day long car event in KY that was plagued by the same conditions year after year. Its actually coming up in 2 weeks. They ended up moving the date to try to avoid the bad weather. Maybe he'll give it a shot next year.

I think it depends on which site you check. Accuweather says rain at 6am Sunda and no more rain til noon. That is a pretty good break..if its true? We'll just have to wait til Sat night and see what they are saying then.
Yea.. other than the killer wind, it might be okay although I'd probably drop back to the 42 mile route just to try to be done before the rain sets in.

You can use a different brake pad or a multi-use pad like the Koolstops.

Sandy, I had a great time! I decided to ride a longer route and did 45 instead of the 31 that I had planned, and it turned out to be quite a challenge. Charley and myself rode together and we kept a pretty good pace considering the wind.
The weather was nice and warm, with no clouds or rain, but the wind, well, it was murder. We were running into headwinds pretty much the entire last 2/3 of the ride. Other than the wind, though, I don't think I could have asked for a more perfect day to ride.
I'll have stats up later but I'm off to get cleaned up and rest at the moment.

The wind hit me quite hard in a couple of places. One cross wind I actually leaned into the wind to keep from getting blown over . Stat's were not as good as I would have hoped but the pain won that arguement. I ended up with 64.92 miles with 4:21 ride time and an average of 14.6 mph.

Just took a quick nap and feel incredibly refreshed, so here's my stats -
Time - 3:06:27
Average - 14.6 mph
Distance - 45.35 miles:D
Max - 41 mph:eek:
Charley's distance measurements are a bit more than mine, since he started measuring as soon as we took off from the shelter, and I started from further down the road, where we lined up.

I am to but I did go out for a ride and got hit by a hard cross wind and went down got a little bruised up but other wise fine. So not sure if I could have done the ride with the gust anyway but sure would liked to have tried I really would have like to see all that great great going out.

Windy ride. Took the TanK. Andrew, you're a great companion. I thoroughly enjoyed the day. There was about an 8 mile stretch by the brick yard where we were always with in 15 degrees of straight into the wind. Slow going that section was... Stats are from the GPS since I forgot my 'puter.
45.86 miles @ 14.4 mph moving average with top speed 39.8  Combined average speed 12.6mph.
I saw Tracy about a mile from the park entrance as I was heading out. Hope there was still pizza when you got in.

Scott and I did the 31 on single bikes.
We cut the 31 mile route a little short.
27.3 miles
average speed: 10.6
max speed: 30.0
calorie count: 2500 burned
My commuting bike is a bit heavier, so it didn't move in the wind except when we were crossing that lake near the end of the ride, in a cross-wind. My bike and I probably outweigh Tracy and his bike. It only seemed like the wind was pushing around golf-ball sized chunks of pollen!
We were the last customers at rest stop 1. I ran out of oomph on that long uphill that was shortly after the rest stop and had to walk up a lot of that hill. We had a nice chat with the guy whose bike frame broke around there while I was resting near the top of the hill. He was riding his mtb uphill somewhat slowly, and his frame cracked. He got at least 1 foot on the ground and didn't fall, but the frame was in 2 pieces by the time he was stopped. The rest stop volunteers at rest stop 1 picked him up after they closed the rest stop.
If there weren't so many trees around our house, we might have noticed the bright blue skies and loaded up the tandem.... It would have been a good day to benefit from Scott's strength on the tandem.

Props to you guys that braved the wind. I am too much of a fatass to ride in wind like that. Id have gotten blown off the bike with all my frontal area.

Congrats to Zonda riding both days and do the 64.
Thanks for the kudos, but I rode the 31 mile route. After the hilly 55 mile ride Sat. 4/28, I didn't think I was ready for a hilly metric century. Michelle and I planned to ride the 43 mile route. After seeing how windy it was, we decided to ride the 31 mile route with Jackie T. and Susan instead. Still a good ride. This is the best local ride all year.
A century is NOT on my list of things to do any time soon!

Wow, you finished up well. I really enjoyed riding with you, Margot, Javier, and Mike. It was pretty lonely after I peeled off at the 42 mile route short cut. My pace feel off a bit without our pace line.
Distance - 44
Average - 15.6
