Thanks to everyone for the pedal advice. I might have missed something with the switch from Google Groups, but thanks to Jay, Zonda, Bill, and Mike. In the short run I've decided to try the VP R-61 road pedals I received with my bike. I had shelved them because the original pair appeared to have a bad bearing. But the sales company exchanged them for another pair, just got them in the mail.
Lots of great shoe advice. I have to say Mike that the sandal suggestion is intriguing, but I have exactly the opposite problem with my foot shape. Mine are long and narrow. My toes usually hangover the end of sandals, which could lead to painful bike mishaps.
