Some of you saw this stuff on our last ride and I mentioned it but I thought I'd made a longer post. I've been using a lot of this sports drink Walmart sells (Yes, Walmart) called Replenish. It's on the same aisle as Koolaid, Crystal Light, etc. This stuff really isn't anything special. It's got potassium and sodium in it and that's about all electrolytes wise.

What makes this stuff appealing tho, is 2 things.

1 - It's sugar free so it's 0 calories. I got enough energy stored "on board" that I dont need any sugar.

2 - It comes in handy packages that makes it easy to carry and dump into water bottles. Each packet makes 16.8 ounces. You can carry 3 of them, which essentially take up 0 space and dont weigh squat and fill up 2 water bottles.

The stuff sells for $2.57 and has 10 packages in it so each box will make 168 ounces. The flavors Ive seen are lemon lime and fruit punch. I prefer the lemon line personally.

I stopped and picked some up. It's just like gatorade.

I was going to tell you that Wal-Mart in Clayton has restocked.

So, how do you get your calories on rides, if this doesn't have any? Do you eat a couple of gels or a PowerBar or something similar? I try to take in at least 250cal/hr on rides like the Benson/Coates or the Wendell ride Saturday. I usually get my calories from HEED and gels...

I've been there when I didn't get enough calories in on rides longer than 2hr and it's not good, at least for me.

I dont need calories. I have enough around my waist for now :)

I might bring 2 gels for a 50 mile ride.. thats all I really need. HEED really doesnt have all that many calories either in comparison to Accelerade.

Tracy, this stuff tastes like Gatorade but Gatorade has a buttload of calories.

Guess I probably don't really need more calories either, as I too, got plenty to spare :)

You feel ok with just 2 gels on the ride to Benson/Coates? I had 3 or 4 gels plus 2 bottles of HEED. So, probably something like 6-700 calories for 3 hours of riding. Guess I can try less on the next ride and see how it goes. Maybe if I cut those out, it might help me to lose more....

I felt fine on that route. The week before I did the whole thing and took nothing with me. A guy gave me a Snickers Power Bar that I ate in Benson.. that was it for that ride.

The only time Ive ever felt bad on a ride was when I ran out of fluids on one of the last Cyclepath rides and we got lost and ended up doing an extra 15 miles. I rode basically 30 miles with no fluids and it was 95+ that day.

A friend of mine swears by chocolate milk after a long ride.

I just read the following in Prevention Magazine about Chocolate Milk.

Perfect Recovery Drink
Chocolate Milk
After a workout, your muscles need protein to repair microscopic muscle tears, plus another shot of carbs to help restock energy stores. The ideal elixir? Reduced-fat chocolate milk. In an Indiana University study, cyclists who drank it after a tough racing session had improved endurance and recovered faster than those who drank an ordinary sports drink (which supplies carbs and electrolytes, but no protein).
