Four routes. See February (http://www.trianglecycling.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=14&day=2007-2-3&c=1) calendar for details. You must be signed in to view the calendar entries.

Please RSVP by Friday, 5:00 p.m. with your choice of routes, so I can plan riding groups. Thanks

Very cool. I'll be there for one of the rides. I haven't decided yet. My girlfriend has expressed interest in the 10 miler. I might ride with her on this ride for support. She's very new to this so I kinda want to be with her. I'll confirm later in the week which route I'll be riding on.

Depending on the weather, Ill be there as well. Ill do either the 34 or the 42 if there is interest. The terrain out there is a lot different than what's been ridden in Cary or by my place. Lotta climbing.

Right now the high for next Sat is 53. If that holds, I wont be there :)

i'm in for either the 34 or 42 (preferably 42 since it's the birthday ride :) ), but if the high for the day is as Jay says, I most likely won't be riding either. I'm a weather weenie and will have to ride on the trainer :(

So, guess I'll know more by Thurs or Friday whether I ride or not.

Karen.

Seems like 53 deg. would be good for hill climbing. Might be a chilly start but the body should heat up quickly.

here's a gmap of the 42mi route (http://http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=674069)- let's you see the elevation changes.

i haven't been up in that area, but it doesn't look extremely bad as far as hills. guess i could be wrong...

I might be in for the 20. 53 is too cold? Not many northerners in our group apparently. But if its 53, windy, and hilly, I might bail out too.

I'll let you know Zonda.

Doris and I plan to ride - weather permitting.

Mike, I'm glad your girlfriend may give it a try. Looks like the forecast might be changing to be colder...:(

KarenG

speaking of changing forcast.....here's WRAL's prediction (http://www.wral.com/weather/). high of 35 for Saturday means i'm stayin' home

TracyW

OK, I don't think I will give 35 a try either.

Wow, it does look like it will be a little cold on Sat. Let's see if the forecast changes any over the next few days.

Zonda
01-31-2007, 06:21 PM
We can decide Friday, but it doesn't look good. If the low is 20 and the high is only 42, that's too cold, brrhh... We have started with cold temperatures in the high 30s, but it usually warms up quickly to the 50s by the time we finish.

Zonda

We need to make a decision tomorrow so I can let the Gyros know if we are riding. Look at the forecast tomorrow for the weekend and let me know if you want to ride. If it stays with a high of low 40s, I think it will be too cold. Thanks

The "Assault" starts & finishes on New Light / Bruce Garner which follows the ridge minimizing the ups & downs. NL/BG/Pokomoke is essentially an express to get you to the interesting stuff. However, one knowledgeable with the area could help you change your express start & finish to interesting stuff.

For an appetizer, if the course turns out too flat for you, don't ride the last 3.2 miles on NL / Six Forks - Pleasant Union Road to finish. Instead, turn right onto Ghoston for 1 mile, right onto NC-98 for 0.1 m, left onto Peed Road for 1.7 m, left onto Mt Vernon Church for 1.9, and then finish by turning left for 2.5 miles on the flat of Pleasant Union Road into BJP.

There are more climbs on the "Northwest Passage" than the "Assault".

Even though the weather doesn't look all that bad, I think I will go ahead and sit this one out.

JayC

Weather.Com still shows a high of 50 for Sat. Im inclined to pass but I may change my mind as I have something new I want to try out. I guess Ill have to see if the temps go down any further before I make a decision.

Sorry guys, but I'm going to cancel for Sat. I think it will be too cold. If any polar bears are itching to ride in 30-40 degree weather, please feel free to go ahead.

KarenG

i don't know if i'm gonna ride or not, at least around here. i'm definitely not going to ride the BJP ride.

if it warms up to close to 50 saturday afternoon, i may do my 25mi route and then a little extra at the end (or not). jay are you gonna do the BJP ride if you decide to ride or would you like to ride with me? looks like it might be close to 50 by 2pm...

KarenG
02-01-2007, 08:13 PM
ok. if you want to ride from your house, that's fine too. just take it easy on me, cause i haven't been riding a lot, other than 45-60min on the trainer 2-3x per week.

TracyW
02-01-2007, 08:41 PM
Can't wait to get back on the roads with ya'll. Gunna have to hit the trainer to get the legs back from taking a couple/three weeks off.

Without too much detail, the splints came out today and this breathing thing is great so far! Still some swelling, bruising, etc. but so far so good.

KarenG
02-01-2007, 08:47 PM
cool. glad you are on the way to getting better! breathing through both nostrils is great ain't it?? :D

hit the trainer this week and be ready to ride next Saturday, as long as we have warm weather..

Jay

I'm not going to ride outside tomorrow. High is somewhere close to 47, but it's gonna also be slightly windy, meaning it'll feel colder than that. Too cold for me. Maybe next weekend will be better.

Karen.

I am undecided about biking tomorrow. It will be cold!

From 2-4pm there is an open house at BJPP - see http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/538883.html

I guess the ride from Blue Jay Point is out then. I'm really looking forward to the nicer weather so we can ride out of this park. I will definately ride tomorrow but probably in my neighborhood so I'm not too far from the house if I get too cold.

I really don't enjoy riding out there. There is too much traffic and until you get on the other side of 98, I really don't feel very safe.. plus there are a lot of hills. Fortunately I have been hard at work in my top secret laboratory building a hill bike over the winter (not to mention the engine has been lightened up considerably) so maybe I wont hate that place as bad as I did this past year.

williamtash

I really doubt that but if your engine works i may need it for the hills anywhere The only place that i have every riden my bike that had more hills was hillsboro at bike fest with the ruff roads on top of it. I was either hilled to death or bounced to the point i thought teeth would fall out

Zonda

Jay,

Can't wait to see your secret project!

Just remember, we are doing rides in north Raleigh to return the favor to north Raleigh riders who drove all the way to Cary to ride with us last fall.

Jay, you ride Cary Parkway, Highhouse Rd, Davis Dr, Kildaire Farm Rd, NC-751 & you think there is too much traffic on Carpenter Pond Rd? I think you are suffering from familiarity induced mis-perception.

If returning the 1.5 miles on Six Forks Rd from 98 to BJP turn-off bothers you (traffic there oftens bothers me), then I suggest trying Ghoston, Peed, MT Vernon Church to finish - almost no traffic. Complete a few rides with that finish, and you will have learned how to ride hills.

And if you don't like the 0.7 m segment on 98 between Boyce Mill & Coley - well, I think you know what I think of that stretch given the safer alternative nearby.

As for hills ... this is the NC Piedmont.

I too am a cold weenie. At least when it is below 40, windy, and little prospect of warming up. However,

I took the dog to BJP to hike Falls Lake Trail & can report that there were many, many (approx 20) cyclist autos parked in the typical cycling gathering point lot. If SlowSpokes had ridden with a full contingent, the one lot would have been overflowing. (No one was at Pleasant Union School; I found that a bit unusual.) So at least hardy souls were out there this morning.

I think the autos belonged primarily to All-Star & Volvo(?)-Trek(?) racing teams, and Road Dogs. Didn't notice any familiar Gyros autos, but maybe some were Gyros.
