There was a tragic story in the paper this morning: http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/542187.html
It reinforces not only the need for caution, but the need to carry identification when we ride.

I've been planning to get a road id. Guess I should go ahead and get it.

My thoughts are with this guy. I always carry id and insurance card in my pack. I also have the ICE (in case of emergency) number programmed on my phone.

I always carry license and cell phone in my bento box, but I should get one of the road ids too.

I carry wear the road Id and carry my insurance and licience with me every time I ride even if it is just a quick rise. I was hit once by a car on spring forest in raleigh and that will never leave me. That day I was glad I had Id for once on me. That is when I got the Road ID to wear. Got one for grandkids to.

I don't understand the nuances, and don't understand how / what applies to those under 16 without a driver's license. But I think a cyclist can be ticketed for improper vehicle operation - you know - running stop signs, lights, etc.. I sometimes wish more cyclist were ticketed for failure to follow vehicle laws; it would eventually help us all - cyclists and car drivers. And if one is "lucky" enough to encounter an officer that decides to ticket, and are without dirver's license, I'm thinking that would make the situation worse.
By the way, I am NOT wanting tickets to cyclists when the cyclists are in the right - which is what one usually hears about.
