The following is taken from the Carolina Tarwheels web site. Riders can use this information and classification system to determine whether they are ready to ride with the faster subgroups, which seem to be forming under the Slow Spokes umbrella.
We generally will post what the average pace of a ride will be in the ride posting, i.e. 15-17mph. This means that at the end of your ride, your average speed should fall somewhere within this range. To obtain such an average, one needs to be able to cruise at a higher pace, therefore, we will be going faster and/or slower than 15-17mph during the ride.
Ride Pace Classifications:
A pace: 18+ mph
B pace: 16-18 mph
C pace: 13-15 mph
D pace: 10-12 mphA word about pacelines: Many of the faster rides are ridden in a paceline. All cyclists are strongly encouraged to read the attached document on Riding the Paceline before attempting to ride in a faster group’s paceline. If you are new to riding in a paceline, the document is written in Stages, so you don’t have to read and understand everything all at once.
