That's a good point. I think it depends on the riders. Last Saturday we had a slower but capable rider who was okay riding alone. We still waited at the turns and the parking lot to make sure he got in okay, but he set his own pace - especially on the return.
If it was a rider who had not been as comfortable riding alone we might have played it a little differently.

thanks I was just now able to get back out here I saw these was not sure If the ten was going tobe cut from one of the others or not before I printed the ten route. See you all on Sat thenI was not sure which way would be the least confusing, so I went with separate sheets for each distance. I you look at them side-by-side, the 10 and the 19 are identical for the first 5.33 miles, then the 10 makes a U-turn, while the 19 continues for another 4.32 miles before making the U-turn. The 34 and 41 are identical for the first 6.2 miles, then they diverge.

I can't do more than that right now or even that very fast and I will not keep you all back that mean you Zonda I know you to well Do your distance I will be fine.

Change of parking!!!
Since the Road Dogs start at 9:30 and Gyros start at 10:00, all parking at the Blue Jay Center, we will park at the grassy lot so it's easier for new riders to find us. The Blue Jay Center parking lot is too small for our group, much less all 3 groups. Instead of taking the first left, continue straight then turn right into the grassy lot.

10 & 19 milers be alert at intersection of Mt Vernon Church / Creedmoor Rd / Peed Rd - about 4.4 miles into the ride from BJP parking lot.
A pipeline is being installed across / along there. The road surface has not been cut or dug up, but there is quite a bit of mud, gravel & crappy debris littered all over the surface.
With luck, maybe car traffic will sweep some of the debris away over night.
Trying to decide what bike to bring.. other than that, I'm set.

I hope Zonda's injuries are not too serious. Let me know if there is anything I can do. I like the idea of the group buying her a new helmet. Count me in. Is there anything else she needs?
The winds were brutal today. There was one point where a gust from a cross wind nearly knocked me over, and I am still a big guy.
On a happier note, Greg A, Dajuan and I had a good ride. Because of the strong wind, we altered our course and turned around at a convenience store on Cheek road and did an out and back with a little side loop (and one very long hill). Our stats for the day were
Greg A, Dajuan, and Rick F
Distance: 35.25 miles
Speed: 14.0 mph
Time: 2:31
I am going to post a cue sheet for a clockwise loop using the NW Passage route with the side loop on Old Weaver Trail to Olive Grove Church Road to Boyce Road back to Old Weaver Trail. It is a nice scenic loop with little traffic, but one challenging hill. If the wind is blowing like it was today, a clockwise loop would have been better. Going up the hill on Cheek Road into the wind was not much fun.

Max heart rate 240
I have a drug for that. :D
Seriously, though, even for an elite 20 something athlete, a maximum heart rate above 220 is unusual. At my age, a maximum heart rate above 170 is not normal. Given that you are about 15 years younger than me, your maximum heart rate should be about 180. Even if you add 20% because you do an extraordinary amount of aerobic exercise, that puts you up to about 216. Anything above that is just wrong.

I try to pay attention to HR while I ride. I really notice a difference depending on how much training I've been doing.
For my last couple of rides that I have records of my max was
187
209 <- wonder if there was a glitch here on the HRM (or in my body), as I don't think I did anything quite that strenuous on that ride.
181
185
187
183
as a comparison...
167 <- last day of cycle NC after a week of cycling 60-70 miles per day. avg speed was 19.6 mph over 3 hours.

For most people, maximum heart rate should be 220 minus your age. When training, you should try to stay between 55% and 85% of you maximum heart rate. This is the zone where you will get the most benefit from your workout because your body is able to efficiently use oxygen to convert carbohydrates and stored fat into energy. If you stay above this zone for an extended period of time, your body will produce lactic acid to be used as energy and this can result in more muscle soreness the next day.
Long story short...when I'm in a race or triathlon, I'll allow myself to spend more time close to my maximum heart rate; but when I'm training, I try to stay in the 65-80% range. The more often you exercise within this range, the longer you'll be able to work within this range without getting winded.

220-age is very inaccurate. using that, my MHR would be 178 and I've seen a max of 187 on a ride back in september around buckhorn reservoir. my most recent MHR was 185 on a training ride w/Jay Feb 10.
the 220-age is just a mathematical MHR, not a true one. I really don't knwo what mine is, but it's more than 187. i have seen 195 and 198 when I used the cateye double wireless computer, but haven't seen anything quite that high with the Edge.
do a google search and you'll find various ways to calculate a theoretical MHR. but, only a clinical test will tell you what your MHR really is.
i use the karvonen method (http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/hrm1.htm)to calculate my hr%'s, but use a max of 190 not 178.
just my $0.02

The latest version is 208 - 0.7 x age, but whichever you use, it is just an estimate. Everyone is different. The only way to know for sure is to get on a treadmill and go through the Bruce protocol..
220 - age tends to overestimate maximum heart rate for young people, and underestimate maximum heart rate for old people.
