What are we doing about this ride? I know there had been talk of doing the Zack Attack (42mi), but are other shorter routes needed? If so, what distances - 15, 20, 30, etc?
We need a head count on who's gonna do a Clayton ride and what distance you would want to ride, so shorter routes can be made earlier in the week instead of waiting till Thursday.....

We planned to have several routes. Jay suggested using Zack Attack and having shorter routes created from that. He said he would help with that, but I don't know if he still has time.
I can organize it. Hope I'm still anal as before after the bump on the head...
Ive put together a 23 mile route. I think with a 23 and the 41, that should be plenty. This area is REALLY flat and anyone who's been wanting to up their mileage a tad, this is the place to do it. I could probably come up with a 30 if need but I really think anyone who did the 30 at BJP can do the 41 here easy.

The real question may be whether we intend to run the 41 as a true no drop. If we do then the folks that did the 30 should be fine on the 41.

I agree.
I also think it would be a good idea to come up with a standard length of routes. I think that two or three shorter length routes should always be available if the ride is going to be posted as a Slow Spokes ride.

If it is only the matter of putting in different turn-around points for an out and back ride (as was done for the 10 and 19 mile routes from BJP), then I will be happy to create those. Just send me the master route and let me know how many distances you want.
In any event, send me the cue sheets you plan to use, and I will make them pretty and post them as Excel and PDF files.

I had planned to do a hilly 25 mile ride with Team GSK on Saturday, but if you need a leader for a no drop 41 mile ride, let me know, and I can change my plans. Otherwise, I will ride with Team GSK for the next two Saturdays.
Distance is not problem for me as long as I do not go over about 14 mph. I can go faster for 15 miles or so, but I cannot keep up a faster pace over a long distance.
I really dont think an out and back on Buffaloe Rd would be much fun. Ill see if I can come up with something shorter than 23 but its going to be tough.
I have a 23, a 32 and a 41 right now provided all the roads are paved.
Okay.. I have a 12 too but again, I have to make sure all these roads are paved.

might want to look at the 12mi route, it looks weird, as far as the turns. you do a left on byrd, then 2 lefts on buffalo, left on little devine, left on 96, right on 96...
it just looks weird to me, but i haven't looked at anything other than the xls file you posted.
K
Had a leftover waypoint in the 12 that caused some oddness.. I fixed it.
Some notes of interest.. the shorter routes have 1 rest stop but the store DOES NOT have a rest room. This place is a serious hole in the wall.. on par with Bill's Grocery and Used Cars out there in Wendell so if you gotta go, better go beforehand.
Flower's Grocery hotdogs FTW after the ride.

Have you updated the post on the 12 mile route? I am still having problems figuring that one out. I know there is a lot of road construction, but I cannot figure out how to turn right off 96 north onto 96 east or right off 96 east onto Thanksgiving VFD Road.
I can see how to turn left off 96 north onto Thanksgiving VFD road or left off 96 north onto 42 west, then right off 42 west onto Thanksgiving VFD road. It also looks like turning left off Thanksgiving VFD road onto Jordan Narron Road would be putting you west (or southwest), but not not north.
I assume the other two routes are correct, and I have posted PDF files in the cue sheet forum.

Rick,
You might want to state in the Clayton cue sheet thread, that the rides start at the Grocery Bag. Parking has been directly across the street from the store on Buffalo Rd in a grassy area. But, today when I went by there, DOT has constructed a nice ditch, which I don't think I'll be taking my car over.
This past fall we started parking diagonally across the street from the Grocery Bag, in the grassy area just off Hwy 42. So, I would think this is where people should park this Saturday.
Karen.
Its because of the way this cue sheet converter handles direction changes. Let me post the GPX files and it will make more sense. A lot of the stuff probably should be pruned out, I just didnt do it before I posted them.
Actually looking at the routes, thats the only one that has a problem. Delete the second Hwy 39 entry for the right turn and everything else looks fine.
RickF

Actually looking at the routes, thats the only one that has a problem. Delete the second Hwy 39 entry for the right turn and everything else looks fine.
But don't you have to turn left (not right) off NC 96 onto Thanksgiving VFD Road? That was the other thing that had me confused.
I will send you what I think it should be when I get home tonight, and you can let me know if I interpretted it correctly.
Okay.. I fixed it.. I think ;)
RickF

Other than the headings, it looks right now. I will put a clean version in the Cue Sheet forum tonight. I will just leave out the headings.
I do have one question, though. Is there a reason not to do this route in the opposite direction? For a beginner's ride, having all right turns seem safer to me than having all left turns would be.

I wouldnt want to come back up Buffalo road later in the day. Its not TOO bad in the morning but it gets much busier. I think the woman who owns all that land told us that light sees something like 10,000 cars a day.

I'm in for the 41-mile ride.
They've revised Sat to 70
I posted the ride info to the Cyclepath's mailing list and I think some of them will be joining us for various routes. I did have one girl email me that she wanted to ride the 12 so hopefully someone will show up to ride the 12 with her.
This is a super route.. its mostly flat and the traffic is very minimal after you get off Buffaloe Rd. I know it's a drive for some people but it's a great ride that I think everyone will enjoy. Mike D rode it once with us last year.
Plus.. hotdogs...

It is a good route. The flatter terrain makes it much easier to ride a few more miles than you normally would. I do remember getting the "stink eye" from the locals at that rest stop in Pine Level though. They didn't like the looks of that bike gang that rode into town.

Question on the 24mile route. Which way to do you go when leaving the Grocery Bag? First direction is at 2.8 to turn left on buffalo rd? Maybe I'm just reading it wrong. Thanks
RickF
03-09-2007, 03:11 PM
I think you are readihg it wrong.
At 0.0 (which means the start) you turn left, then go for 2.7 miles on Buffalo Road. At 2.7 miles, you turn left and go for 0.1 miles on Little Divine Road . . .

 Whoops. You are corect, Michelle, the 23 mile cue sheet is messed up. I will fix it later this afternoon. I was looking at the 12 mile sheet when I responded, and it is correct. There seems to be a problem converting from whichever software Jay is using to something resembles a cue sheet. I will look at a map and straighten it out. Bottom line is that you do turn left, but there seems to be a line missing from the cue sheet.:o

Hi. I am from Durham and ride with a group over there. I will be in Clayton Area this weekend and wanted to see if you all were going to ride and if I could join you. My average is around 15 but can go slower or faster if needed. I just like to ride with a group for visibility and of course a few good laughs on the ride are always a good thing.

I just looked at a map, and neither the 24 or the 32 seem right. It looks to me like Little Divine Road becomes Browns Pond Road at Hwy 39. I do not think there are any turns involved. I think NC 2127 is labeled Shoeheel Road. I think NC 1934 is Old Beulah Road.
I will put together a route that will not get you lost, but the mileage might be off a little. You can let me know afterwards what changes need to be made. What Jay posted, though, just does not make sense to me. I think every time he looked over his shoulder, his Garmin thought he had made a turn.

I am going to ride with Team GSK out of Chapel Hill tomorrow, so I will not be able to check these myself.
Ack! These sheets are right.. its just confusing because the cue sheet program I use has 0 margin of error. Like the Hwy 39 thing.. you do turn on 39 for like 5 feet.. its kind of a catiwompus turn so technically you are on 39.
I should have cleaned them up a little better but I used this same converter for some rides out here and it worked fine. Ill check Rick's revised versions and make sure they match up.
Rick's 23 is correct. Let me check the 32.
The 32 is right except the last turn on Buffaloe Rd should be to the left, not the right.

on a side note, my husband came up with a JayCism: (i used an albuterol inhaler before coming over to the ride to help me breathe better and it really made me feel "wired"). he said that the 18mph wouldn't count cause i was doping:eek:.
so, now i'm a Doping Separatist Spoke :)

Congratulations Karen! I know you have been working so hard!
so, now i'm a Doping Separatist Spoke :)
Or just a... na.. too easy :)
This was by far the best ride Ive been on since last year. The weather was perfect, the wind wasnt bad at all (Although it did pick up there towards the end a little) and the pace was comfortable. This is an excellent route and I made sure that everyone got to ride that nice hill at the end. Every route finished on that hill :D
Anyone who didnt come out today really missed a great ride.

I agree, it was a great time. Absolutely perfect cycling weather. And good to see Zonda - hopefully back in the saddle again soon!

Betsy, I guess we owe you an apology. We misunderstood something at the stop and thought you and Brian were doing the 30 mile. When we all grouped together for the picture we kinda all got mixed up.
No big deal, we were way slower than you guys anyway. We ended up making a wrong turn and following John (who we didn't realize was doing the 32 route), but it worked out ok because he was riding much closer to our pace anyway. It was a great ride - beautiful weather and I love those nice flat roads (except that hill at the end:)). Hopefully we'll be able to ride some more and improve our pace. We're working toward averaging 15 for the century of Tour de Cure in June, so it's good just to get out on the bike.

glad that's okay. I think we got our wires crossed at that rest stop, because we thought you were on the 30 miler. The 42 mile route was no drop, but we get pretty stretched out at times.
I think the lesson learned is that trying to do a mass start like this morning can lead to confusion (I know we were all together for the photograph), we just weren't sure who was in which group.

After that we all just got clustered together. When we started, I was in the back. MikeD kept saying we were missing someone but I had a number of people in mind and so when we verified that number we just moved on.
I hope everyone can make it out to ride with us again.

Someone post a group photo. I want to see the group.
Wish I could have been there. I've been sawing on a fallen tree and running a roto tiller all day. I'm bushed. Tomorrow, I RIDE!

Zonda had the camera, so I'm assuming she'll be posting soon if not already in the gallery.

I was 2-for-2 this weekend. A fellow caught up to me yesterday on the Trek Store ride and asked which way to turn. I said left, we both went left, and about the time he was out of earshot I realized the correct answer was "right". Oh well. He caught up to us later. Luckily he took it pretty well.
I have updated my User Title to reflect my directional capability....
HAHAHAHAHA.. dude.. YOU need a Garmin 305 worse than anyone on the forums!
