I received an email from Larry Thomson, Director of Development, Easter Seals UPC North Carolina. They were able to get the fundraising minimum lowered to $500 for the Ride Without Limits (http://www.ridewithoutlimits.org/). I can’t recall what the original amount was $2,000 or $2,500, but it was high. This is good news.

I wish them luck, the changes they are making will broaden the interest and appeal of the event.
The original amount was $1800. If you don't raise the $500 (in addition to the $80 registration) they will conveniently charge your credit card the balance 4 weeks after the event.
I know that they approached a number of groups that participate in MS-150, etc, and were told "thanks but no thanks"
Also, events like this survive on the backs of their volunteers. They are still charging $55 if you want to volunteer, or assist a disabled rider to complete the event.
I don't know the individuals who are running this and certainly don't intend to single anyone out for criticism, but I just feel like their whole national approach to this event has been poor and bordering on the arrogant. When you participate in the MS events, you really feel valued not for the $$ you bring but as an individual. The MS approach (which I like much better than this) is that they want everyone to come out, participate, have a good time - maybe you'll raise a lot of money, but if not hopefully you increased your awareness of the disease and they hope to see you back next year raising more $ the next time around.

At that level I sure wasn't interested. I think that 5 bills is still pretty high, but I'm cheap.
I agree.. $500 is still too high especially with this event coming right after the MS ride. They should either have the event at a different time next year or lower the limit. For $500, I still wont participate.
I cant go back to people that donated for the MS ride with my hand out less than 3 weeks after the MS ride. That just wont float.
If it was $200 or so, Id have probably paid it out of my pocket but for $500, not gonna happen.

... They are still charging $55 if you want to volunteer, ...
They expect people to PAY to volunteer!?
I know how many volunteers that would have attracted for running events I was involved with in my previous lifetime. You could have counted them on the upraised fingers of a closed fist.

A lot of organizations do that. The reasoning is that volunteers are not invested in the event and get better offers or just change their minds. Paying volunteers are financially tied to the event and are more reliable. They usually also get an end of event party. I see the logic, but I still don't pay to not play.

Sorry, I do not see the logic. With Limits or anywhere else.
