Distance: 23, 32, 44.4 and 52.6 miles (52.6 mile route has cutoff to make it 44.4 miles)

Cue Sheets (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=18164) – CSH 1 (Please print).

Pace:
10-12 mph beginners (follows strict no drop policy)
13-15 mph (riders wait at turns for others to catch up)

There are several subgroups for ride paces and distances. Please watch out for others in your subgroup so no one gets dropped. If you can’t keep up, drop back to the next subgroup.

All riding groups will stay together until we cross Hwy 55 (3.5 miles) then you can break away into subgroups. This gives slower riders a chance to experience riding in a large group for a few miles. Faster riders can use this as a slow warm up before breaking away into your subgroups. Slow riders lead the group until the designated break away point.

Contact Person: Zonda. Send me a private message through this site if you have any questions.

Comments:

RSVP to help plan riding groups.
Please arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at the ride start time listed.
Beginners are welcome to join this ride.
All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge). Helmets required.
It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license and health insurance card (or a photo copy) in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.
New riders should read Bicycling Hand Signals and Safety Pointers (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=17385)

Count me in for the 32 as well. I would like to go longer, but I have too many things that need to be done at home.

Zonda,

Welcome, Rob. I saw that forecast - high of 54 and low of 35. I have ridden in worse, but I was not expecting it to be that cold in April. As long as it is not too windy and there is not ice on the roads, it will be fine.

It's the inaugural Selma Cyclepaths MS-150 training ride this Saturday, so I'll be mostly riding out of the Grocery Bag on Saturdays from now on - but I'll see you on Wednesdays!

It depends on where they are riding whether I will ride with them or the Slow Spokes. This week, Team GSK is riding out of Wilson Park in Carrboro, so I will ride with the Slow Spokes.

I will most likely ride the 23 mile route with the new riders unless Sandy plans to join us and wants to lead it. If so, I'll ride with slower riders on the 32 mile route.

If it's cold, dress in layers. That helps. Temperatures below 70 are too cold for me, but I some how managed several rides during the winter with temperatures at 36-38 degrees at the ride start. If I can do it, anyone can do it!! It's a matter of figuring out how to dress to be warm enough, but not too warm to make you sweat.

Zonda,

I will be doing the Cyclepaths ride on Saturday (probably most Saturdays throughout the summer as well). Hopefully, I can get out to some OMV rides or we can organize another social this summer....

Zonda
04-03-2007, 05:02 PM
Sandy, glad you can make it.

Karen, I know we won't see you, Jay and some others while the Cyclepaths have rides closer to you. We will definitely schedule another social to get everyone together.;)

Charley bailed for Saturday saying it will be too cold.

Rob, Sandy, Rick, Charley, Mike D. & Tracy, can you make it if we change the start time to 1:00 so it's warmer? We might get a few more riders if it's closer to 50 degrees.

I'm going to be in town this weekend and I'd like to ride with you guys. I'm game for the 32...still getting used to the "hills" in raleigh compared to ultra-flat greenville. Looking forward to it. Christy

Hi Christy, welcome to the group!

We may change the start time so it's warmer. Watch for additional replies to see if we keep it at 9:00 or make it later in the afternoon at 1:00. Looking forward to meeting you.

Yes, I will post a cancellation here and on the calendar. Maybe we won't have to cancel if we change it to 1:00.

I have too much yard work to do to ride in the afternoon. I could start at 10:00, but if you want to start later than that, I probably will ride with Team GSK instead.

Thanks Rick that makes me feel so much warmer for riding and you even put in the wind so that 46 is going to feel a lot colder. Oh joy

RickF
04-05-2007, 03:00 PM
I left out the humidity and wind chill. The dewpoint is very low (22°F at 9AM, dropping to 17°F at noon), which makes the windchill even worse. The 39°F at 9AM will feel lilke 32°F. The 46°F at noon will feel like 40°F. Of course, if we are cycling, we will generate our own wind factor, which will drop the wind chill even more.

You are ever so helpful there Rick. I really could put a damper on the riding for the weekend for me. I have riden is 32 but there was no wind and that was cold and i did not try 23 miles in it only about 11 miles and two cups of cocco after to warm every part of me back up

The problem with the afternoon is that the forecast goes from "sunny" to "mostly sunny" and the wind picks up.

I would rather have cold than wind. What about 10:00 for others? I know Rick can still make it at 10:00. It will be a little warmer and sunnier.

Zonda

I have not officially bailed, but I am an unstable fence dancer. Weather.com shows it to be raining up to start time with temps of 42 deg. feeling like 34 and 17 mph winds.

williamtash
04-06-2007, 03:24 PM
I am feeling you that is what I have heard to If it is raining up to start time I will not ride. Cold and wind is one thing cold wind and wet is another. I will be on fence until I see weather in the morning. If no rain i will ride. but with high wind I may not make full 23

04-06-2007, 05:27 PM
ya'll have fun -- predicted snow showers in the clayton area till 10AM with 17-18mph winds:eek:

i most likely won't be joining the Cyclepath's first ride either....i'm not going to take my pretty new bike out on wet, cold, windy roads. might, and i mean might, ride saturday afternoon tho.

anyways....have fun

I just watched the weather and I have to admit it doesn't look good. If the predictions are even close to what they are saying it's going to be nasty. I'm really debating whether or not to bail. If I do suck it up and go I might not do the full 52 miles. I think I'd be frozen.

williamtash
04-06-2007, 05:50 PM
Mike did you hear the wind 13-30 miles 30 can knock you off a bike That what is going to make me bail it that is what it turn out to be

Zonda
04-06-2007, 06:05 PM
It seems to get worse by the minute. Hard to believe it was in the 80s Wed.

Why don't we touch base on here tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. or earlier if it's obvious we can't ride. That should provide enough time to get your stuff ready and get there if we have a miracle and the weather improves.

TracyW
04-06-2007, 07:50 PM
Rather than let this linger on until morning, I am going to go ahead and bail. Considering the fact that we are heading out of weather like this it will not hurt me to skip a weekend and wait for next weekend. Besides, the gym will be closed for Easter so I can use tomorrow for my Sunday workout (I think it was meant to be that way). Heck, I might even do my taxes.

RickF
04-06-2007, 08:15 PM
As much as I hate to admit it, I think this is not going to be a good day to ride. The worst part for me is that I am going to be out-of-town for Wednesday and next weekend. My next opportunity to ride is not going to be until the 18th.

JayC
04-06-2007, 10:27 PM

I don't think I'm well prepared for snow tomorrow morning...add to that a bruised hand from a mountain bike spill...and I think I'm going to bail also. Hopefully I can ride with you all soon. Any hopes for a reschedule for Sunday? I haven't checked the weather yet...but, maybe it will clear up.

=) Christy:(

Good call. There is snow on my deck this morning:eek:Wow! Snow on the S-ish side of town! Not on the N side (at least not that I saw).

I too am a cold weenie, esp when the wind is like today. But I happened to be driving past Pleasant Union School @ ~ 10:07 when about 20 Gyros were heading out to start their ride. Too weather tough.

TracyW
04-07-2007, 07:32 PM
Is there a difference between a cold weather weenie and someone who had already felt the warmth of spring, knows it's just a few days away and just doesn't want to bother with today's weather? I think there is.

Pugslyyy
04-07-2007, 09:25 PM
either way, I'm not riding until the weather gets warmer!
