View Full Version : Ride 04/28/07, 9:00 a.m. The Spin Cycle, Cary, RSVP

Zonda
04-22-2007, 03:33 PM
RSVP by Friday, 5:00 p.m. with your route choice.

When: Saturday, 04/28/07, 9:00 a.m.

Where:

The Spin Cycle (http://www.thespincycle.com/)
Salt Box Village
1241 Kildaire Farm Road
Cary, NC 27511

Parking is sensitive at the shopping center. Please park away from the shop on the back row near McDonald’s or ride your bike to the shop.

Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1241+Kildaire+Farm+Road,+27511&ie=UTF8&z=15&ll=35.764239,-78.783302&spn=0.015635,0.042915&om=1&iwloc=addr)

Distance:
15-20 miles (out and back from 31.6 route based on skills of riders)
31.6 miles
42.9 miles
54.6 miles

Cue Sheets (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=19466) – TSC Route 1
I will bring a few extra copies for anyone who forgets their cue sheet, but you need to print a copy to bring to the ride.

Pace:
10-12 mph beginners (follows strict no drop policy)
13-15 mph (riders wait at turns for others to catch up)

There are several subgroups for ride paces and distances. Please watch out for others in your subgroup so no one gets dropped. If you can’t keep up, drop back to the next subgroup.

All riding groups will stay together until the designated breakaway point then you can break away into subgroups. Since we are having problems with aggressive drivers in Cary, it is important that we stay together until we get a few miles away from traffic. Drivers tend to harass small groups of cyclists rather than large groups

Contact Person: Zonda. Send me an email or private message (http://www.trianglecycling.com/member.php?u=42) through this site if you have any questions.

Comments:

PLEASE RSVP to help plan riding groups.
Please arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at the ride start time listed.
Beginners are welcome to join this ride.
If you are new to the group, arrive early to fill out a liability waiver and emergency contact information (if you don't wear a Road I.D. (http://www.roadid.com/))
All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge). Helmets required.
It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license, health insurance card (or a photo copy) and emergency contact information in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.
New riders should read Bicycling Hand Signals and Safety Pointers (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=17385)

Hey. I noticed on the 31 mile Q sheet that it has us going west on Old Holly Springs-Apex road after 55 bypass. That crosses that section of broken pavement that we encountered Wednesday night. Did anyone cross it? Any problems crossing it?

We detoured wednesday, but that will not be an option Saturday.

aliepins
04-26-2007, 07:07 PM
Brian, Rick and I rode across it. It's only a stretch of 50 yards or so. If you dismount it would take less than a minute to get to the other side.

Won't be there this Saturday. Hope to make next Wed.

Cheers,
Andy

it's not that bad really. pick a line and stick with it...watch out at the end on the way out, a little rough, as well as coming back that way...

An option might be to take New Hill to Friendship, crossing over US 1 at New Hill Holloman? You could then go up old US 1 and rejoin the route at Humie Olive - the mileage would be almost the same.

I rode over it. No problem.

RickF

I rode over it. No problem.Yes, but you have 35mm tires :D . It is a little more of a challenge on 23mm tires. Andy and I also rode over it on 23mm tires without problems, but we had the heavy Specialized tires with Flak Jacket. If you have weight weenie tires, there is a good chance of having a flat on that section.

That stretch can be ridden, but use your judgement as to whether you think you can control the bike and whether your tires will hold up on gravel. There is no disgrace in walking the bike across that section if you do not feel that you are up to riding a road bike on gravel.

There is no disgrace in walking the bike across that section if you do not feel that you are up to riding a road bike on gravel.I was so unexcited by that section and the thought of riding up it, that I took a different return route on Wednesday. I just don't think it is a particularly good choice for a group ride, especially when there are plenty of good other options that don't require you to ride on loose gravel and potentially damage your bike (or your body)

I have modified the cue sheet for what was the 31.6 mile route as Jon suggested. The alternate route is 29.5 miles, and avoids Old Holly Springs Apex Road. The new cue sheet is here: http://www.trianglecycling.com/showpost.php?p=199722&postcount=9

I am not going to be riding on Saturday, but for those of you who are, you now have a choice - 31.6 miles with about a 20 yard section that is not paved, or 29.5 miles that is on paved roads. The first 10.3 miles and the last 12.7 miles of these two routes are identical. It is just the section in the middle that is different.

I will post a PDF version of this route later this evening.

Gerard
04-27-2007, 12:12 PM
I will do the 29.5 mile route.
Zonda: Where did you get your $8 clip to attach the route to your handle bar? Also, I saw someone with a clear plastic cover you can slip the directions in to protect it from wind and rain. Where can I find that as well?
Thanks.

While it is an admirable policy, I don't see the need for someone who has done these rides before to be backed up by a "leader". Therefore, even if I do come to ride, Charley can ride with whatever group he wants. It doesn't seem that any inexperienced riders have opted in.

I agree with you when there are experienced riders at the same pace they can ride together. However, the leader is not only leading beginners. It's about providing an opportunity for everyone interested to have someone to ride with. That is important to me and Charley, Rick and Michelle are volunteering their time to mentor beginners and ride with the slowest rider.

If you and Sandy want to ride together, that's great. However, if only you RSVP'd, Charley is available to ride with anyone interested in the short route. He will do the same as me, Michelle and Rick and ride behind the slowest rider.

I have ridden with Forsyth twice on Wed. at her pace. She's not a beginner, but was the only person attending the 10-12 mph group. Because it was my night to lead the 10-12 group, Forsyth had me to ride with her.

Sandy will be there wearing her SS jersey and socks...:) She will have Charley to ride with if you can't make it, but I hope you can!

Tracy is also riding the 54 mile route.

Hi Zonda & All,

Esther and I are planning to show up and do the 29.5 on our Tandem. Actually I'm rooting for the 42, but Esther isn't sure she'll be up for it. Gee, we did fifty at the CNC Spring Ride, into a headwind!

We'll be there in the morning, whatever the case. See you then!

Hello all, I'm new here and terribly sorry to check in so late, but I just saw this and would be interested in riding in the morning. I'm fairly new to road biking and brand new to group riding. My experience is pretty much limited to riding around and near NCSU, going to class, running errands, and the occasional "just for fun" ride.

I've been up to my eyeballs in projects the past month or so, but I'd love to relax a bit tomorrow morning and get to know you guys since I'll surely be joining in more this summer.

If anyone does get a chance to read this and needs to ask/tell me anything before I get there in the morning, I'll put my cell phone # up here - it's 336-583-6610. (You all seem like trustworthy people!:) )

I'll print and bring the cue sheet and safety/emergency things as directed, and I'll be there ready to roll at 8:30. Being a newb, I'll do the shortest/slowest ride anyone else wants to do, so I can get a feel for what it's like.

If there's a problem with my lateness, I sincerely apologize and will not be offended if I have to come back another time. I don't want anyone to be inconvenienced because I'm the one too busy to check for these things in time. I'm just tired of school and desperately need a break.:(

I look forward to riding in the morning and thank you in advance for your patience!

- Andrew M.

Hello all, I'm new here and terribly sorry to check in so late, but I just saw this and would be interested in riding in the morning.

Welcome to the group!

I try to get a head count so I can organize riding groups in advance, get an idea how many new riders are coming and it lets others know who is riding at their pace. When I know how many new riders are coming, there are things I can do in advance so it’s not so hectic for me at the ride trying to chat with other riders, welcome new riders, assess their skills and get myself ready to ride. I realize this may seem overly organized, but offering four routes and various paces requires a little planning up front to make things run smoothly. It's never too late to RSVP. You can RSVP up til the ride start time.

My only advice is to ride around the parking lot to warm up before the ride and plan to have fun! I’m glad you can make it!;)

My middle daughter is competing next weekend in Columbia, MD at international distances. It is an outdoor, open water swim.
