Hi Zonda - see you there!

I'll ride 16 or slower, I'm trying to hit some lower heart rate ranges in my training.

Brian and I will be there. This is our only ride this week since we will be out of town on the weekend, so I wouldn't mind trying to push a little faster (14.5-15) if anyone else is interested in trying with me knowing I may not be able to hang at 15:)

I'll be there for 15-16 if 2 conditions are met: 1) I get outta work on time and 2) I get over this upper respiratory crud that's been going around. Brian should be there for 16-17 regardless.

Cheers!

In Cary Park, I was once passed by a guy walking his dog
But with a few good training rides under my belt, I can say that same guy would have to be jogging with his dog to pass me now :o

I can't ride this Wednesday...the hubby's out-of-town and I need to chauffer Kayley to and from all of her activities. I hope to be there on Saturday.

I think my wife will be joining us this week for her first ride. The two of us will ride the 10-12 pace.

Rick, no need to join us unless a bunch of 10-12 beginners show up.

If my wife doesn't come out today I'll be in the the 16+ group.

Whew...I'm back. Hope I didn't leave anyone wondering where I was.

First mistake, I rode for about 1:15 before I realized how long I'd been going. Bad. Second, I completely underestimated how difficult it was to get back after riding 14 miles out...Then I got lost. Twice. Fun times, huh?

I got to the railroad tracks, about 3 miles from the start, and got stuck at the train. By this time it's about 8:00pm and it's getting dark. A minivan pulls up behind me and the lady driving asks me if I want a ride. I thanked her and tossed my bike on the rack she conveniently had on the back. Turns out, she leads rides at Cycling Spoken Here, and invited me to come out and join them there sometime. She gave me a lift back to my car, and I was on my way.

Neat experience, considering I was going to end up calling for a ride in about 10 minutes. It's interesting how things work out sometimes, isn't it?

Overall, it was a very pleasant experience, I just learned a few things -
1. Good shorts are a must. I'm not going anywhere else until I get some more comfortable ones.

2. Bring more water. I ran out just past the halfway, and ended up making a pitstop to get more.

3.Pay closer attention to when it gets dark. Some of those people driving are pretty crazy and I wouldn't trust them at night. The roads aren't too smooth in some spots either, which gets hard to see.

A++ will ride again!

Stats:
Time: 2:01:30
Average: 13.5mph(The ride back killed me. I had about 15.5 when I turned around.)
Distance: 27.43 miles
Max: 32.5mph

Welcome back Bob S., Doris, Andrew, Bob J., and Mike W.!

Rick and Michelle, thanks for leading.

Wayne W., thanks for hanging with Doris.

Andrew, sorry you got separated. I forgot to designate someone to watch out for you. My mistake. With 25 riders attending, it's getting hard to keep up with everyone even as organized as I am!! I'm glad you got a lift and got back o.k. After a few rides you will be more familiar with riders at your pace. Glad you still enjoyed the ride.;)

1. Good shorts are a must. I'm not going anywhere else until I get some more comfortable ones.

Bibs.. you want bibs. Shorts are great on women with hips but men should wear bibs. They dont slide down as the ride progresses and the pad stays put.

I am partial to the Pearl Izumi Microsensor 3D bibs. They're kind of pricey but you can catch them on sale from time to time.

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=22013&subcategory_ID=1120

Worst comes to worst, you can get 10% off of them at lunchtime on Tuesdays at Performance.

If you cant stomach the price, the Performance house brand bibs are okay as well.

The Elite bibs are okay

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23491&subcategory_ID=1120

And the Ultra bibs are the next step up. Ive found that these bibs tend to run small.

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=22361&subcategory_ID=1120

Head over to Performance and try some on. Your crotch will thank you.

DO NOT under ANY circustance get the Performance gel shorts or bibs. They suck and the pad will come unsewed.

That has not been my experience with the Performance Century Short w/ Gel Chamois (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=19869). I have had two pair, and had no problems with either. I did not put too many miles or months on the first pair because I lost so much weight I had to drop two sizes. The second pair I have used for almost a year now, and there is no sign of wear or of the chamois coming unsewn. The only problem is that I have dropped another size, so they are getting loose.

The problem I have with bibs is that my torso is too long in proportion to the rest of my body, which make the straps too tight. I would rather pull the drawstring in the shorts tight than to have the straps pulling down on my shoulders. Maybe I just know how to tie the drawstring and not have the shorts ride down because I was once a competitive swimmer. If I could keep Speedos on while doing a forward start, keeping cycling shorts in place is no problem.

I have 3 pair of the gel bibs. Every one of them the pad has come unsewed. There's been several threads about the same over on Bikeforums. Sounds like you must have got the Wednesday shorts, Rick.

So I went to Performance today and got myself some of the Performance Ultra bibs with the gel pad. I like the feel of the bibs a bit better than the shorts, and sitting on a saddle, the gel ones really did feel better. I thought I had picked up the Century ones, but when I went to check out, they turned out to be the Ultras, which were $30 more.

I went ahead and got them, figuring that if they did hold up alright then they'd be better quality and more comfortable, but if I do have any trouble with them, then I'll consider it a lesson learned and just not buy them again. They are super-comfartable though, much more so than the running shorts I've been wearing up until now.

I also picked up a Cannondale jersey on sale, and correct me if I'm wrong, but they seem to run a but tight. I ended up getting a 3XL in that jersey, where XL's in other brands fit just the same or looser.

I think you did okay actually. These are the bibs I have that the pad has come unsewed in.

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=19867&subcategory_ID=1120

Im thinking this is what you got. They dont appear to have a gel chamois tho.

Jersey sizing is so variable it is almost a joke. For starters, there are three styles - Club cut, European cut and Pro cut. The club cut jerseys are loose, and the pro cut are supposed to be stretched over your body. If that was not enough, what is considered "small", "medium", "large", etc in clothing made in Europe are at least one size smaller than the corresponding garment that is made in North America.

Bottom line is that you must always try on jerseys. You can not go by sizing charts.

I have two people interested in the pedals. If one of them doesn't buy them, I'll can offer them to Andrew. They have been sitting in a box since Sept. 2005, so I'm in no hurry...;)
