RSVP by Friday, 5:00 p.m. with your route choice if you want to be put in a riding group.

When: Saturday, 05/19/07, 8:00 a.m.

Where:
Cycling Spoken Here (http://cyclingspokenhere.com/)
1377 NW Maynard
Cary, NC 27513

Across from Atlantic Tire and the Shell station. Next to Volvo dealer. Park along corridor by the shop.

Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1377+NW+Maynard,+cary,+nc+27513&ie=UTF8&z=15&ll=35.790874,-78.809953&spn=0.015247,0.042915&om=1&iwloc=A)

Distance:

Charley and I will alternate leading the short route once a month. A short route will be offered on alternate Saturdays if someone volunteers to lead. Charley will lead the short route on 5/19.

23 miles
32 miles
44.4 miles
52.6 miles (52.6 mile route has cutoff to make it 44.4 miles)

Cue Sheets (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=18164) – CSH Route 1 (Please print)

Pace:
10-12 mph beginners (follows strict no drop policy)
13-18 mph (riders wait at turns for others to catch up)

There are several subgroups for ride paces and distances. Please watch out for others in your subgroup so no one gets dropped. If you can’t keep up, drop back to the next subgroup.

All riding groups will stay together until the designated breakaway point then you can break away into subgroups. Since we are having problems with aggressive drivers in Cary, it is important that we stay together until we get a few miles away from traffic. Drivers tend to harass small groups of cyclists rather than large groups

Contact Person: Zonda. Send me an email or private message (http://www.trianglecycling.com/member.php?u=42) through this site if you have any questions.

Comments:

RSVP requested to help plan riding groups.
Please arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at the ride start time listed.
Beginners are welcome to join this ride.
All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge). Helmets required.
It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license and health insurance card (or a photo copy) in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.
New riders should read Bicycling Hand Signals and Safety Pointers (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=17385)

I plan to be there. I prefer the 52.6, but I am open to any distance that has a group at 14 to 17 mph. I would rather ride in a group than by myself, so I am flexible regarding distance and speed (as long as it is not faster than about 17 mph).

I guess your talking about the 23 miles I can help with that one and if no wants to do it I will do the 32 at a snails paces of 10/12

I won't be riding with SS this weekend. Ron and I are leading and sweeping for the Team GSK ride on Saturday that will be in the same area. Maybe I'll see some of you on the road.

Hi Guys! Bess here...I'd love to try the 44 or the 32.... I'm a good 12-14 avg mph...unless it's windy! Bottom line, I need to ride...so fit me in where you can please! I have three weeks left to prepare for the Tour De Cure, 75 miles!

Rick, I'd be up for trying a 52 if you can pedal slower!

Rick, I'd be up for trying a 52 if you can pedal slower!I can keep the bike upright at extremely low speeds. My only concern is when we finish. I would like to finish by about noon. If we start on time and do not spend much time at the rest stops, then we can go 13 mph and still finish not much later than noon. That will work for me. If we go slower than 13 mph, then I would prefer the 44 mile route.

I won't be riding with SS this weekend. Ron and I are leading and sweeping for the Team GSK ride on Saturday that will be in the same area. Maybe I'll see some of you on the road. Now that poses a dilemma for me. The Team GSK web site still shows TBD for this weekend, which is why I said I would ride with the Slow Spokes.

I decided not to ride about 7:15 when it got real dark at my house and I live not too far from Spin Cycle. At 8am, the bottom fell out out my house.

Hey Rick, 44 would still be my longest ride! I'd be up for that too. I'll just show up on time and see where I can fit in! I only go around 12-15miles before I get bored with my own company... :) So any of the (12-14avg) groups will work great!

I decided not to ride about 7:15 when it got real dark at my house and I live not too far from Spin Cycle. At 8am, the bottom fell out out my house. The bottom fell out at The Spin Cycle about 7:55, so even though I was at The Spin Cycle and ready to go, I decided to help my daughter and son-in-law paint their condo instead of riding. I called my wife to let her know I was not riding, and it still had not started raining at my house, which is very close to The Spin Cycle.

It started raining at my house at about 6:00 am and did not let up until 11:00 an the it started all over again. Every time I even thought about putting the bike in the back of my car it down poured so I just gave up and went an had a cup of joe

Hi, I'm Jae, I'm new and not quite sure how to RSVP for the Sat, 5/19 8:00 am ride out of Cycling Spoken Here. Here's hoping this works. See you Sat. I rode with Roger on Tuesday. He says we rode about 14 mph average. I can comfortably do 20 + miles.

what is the team GSK ride?
Team GSK is a MS150 (and other event, like the Tour de Cure and the AIDS Ride) cycling team. They have their own training rides to prepare for the events. It just happens that this week, the Slow Spokes and Team GSK are doing the same 44 and 52 mile routes, but the Slow Spokes are starting at 8:00 and Team GSK is starting at 9:00. A few members of the Slow Spokes (e.g., MichelleW, JackieT, Forsyth, myself) are also members of Team GSK.
http://team.gsk.com

Other members of the Slow Spokes are members of MSFits, MSing Links, Cyclepaths, etc.

After talking with Zonda last night, I think I will do either the 23 or the 33! (thanks Z!!) And I'm in the 13-15mph.

Hey, I recommended that you ride 44 miles or less instead of trying 52 miles since your longest ride is 30 miles. I suggested adding 10-15 miles to each ride rather than 20+ miles. There should be others riding the 44 mile route. I think you will be fine.

Sorry, I missed the 5:00 PM RSVP deadline, but I would still like to join the 32 mile ride tomorrow. I am on a road bike now and up to about 18 mph, so I don't think I'll slow the group down too much.

I guess I will try for the 44 mile group then since there are no 32 milers. Zonda, I will see if you get my late addition before showing up in the morning. If you are willing to add me late then I will be there. Thanks, Dave.

How about the 32 mile group with Rob? He wanted 32 miles. You are a little faster, but if you haven't been riding 30 miles you two will be fine.

It's never too late to RSVP. An RSVP is requested to plan riding groups in advance and let others know if someone is riding at the pace. Glad you can make it! I wondered where you were. Now we know you've been away increasing your speed!!;)

Thank you Zonda. I would love to do the 32 miler. I regularly ride 20 with the Elizabeth City Riders, so 12 more won't hurt. (a whole lot more). They kicked my tail the first few times, but I am getting the hang of it. Glad to catch a ride in Raleigh again.

Hammertime for Zonda!

I had a better ride Wed., 14.8 mph.

Because I made us stop at the American Tobacco Trail on the way out, we lost 1.5 mph on our average walking our bikes on the gravel. The last 10 miles my legs were screaming!! High House Road was NOT fun. Let's see if my Recoverite (http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=PRODUCT&CAT=REC&PROD.ID=4051&OMI=10140,10082,10047&AMI=10140) saves me...:D

I've been taking that stuff too. Something seems to be working, averaged 20.1 today over 30.3 miles even when Jay droped me. :)

btw, Jay did give me the clips and pedals - but I haven't taken a look at them yet. Timing is good, since I broke one of my LOOK clips today and have to change it anyway!

Sounds like you guys had a great ride. We rode in Alabaster, AL (just outside of Birmingham) - me on Brian's sister's bike and Brian on her husband's. I'm 5'6" and his sister is abou 5'3", Brian is 6'2" and his brother-in-law is 5'9". Needless to say the bike fit was interesting - seat posts all jacked up. But we had a good ride - 25 miles at 13.3 mph - not too bad considering the terrain is considerably more hilly than we're used to. Glad to be home - ready to ride on my own bike!:)

We actually missed our turn onto Cary Glenn...and kept going on Yates Store. When We crossed Carpenter Firestation, I knew where I was. We got to Morrisville-Carpenter which turns into Aviation Parkway. We missed the right-left to Carpenter-Upchurch. We stuck to Aviation for about a mile after 54-Chapel Hill Road, to a right on Evans Road...which dead-ends at Maynard....took a right on Maynard. Evans on a Weekend is less traveled because it's more commercial. Four lanes, got a good hill between Westin and Cary Parkway....(never noticed that in car). So we came down Morrisville Carpenter to Morrisville where it turns into Aviation Parkway. It was a nice ride with great company! The traffic was a little heavy in "downtown Morrisville", but not agressive like on High House. (weekend shoppers are maniacs!)

That is a nice little hill. James Jackson is another option from Cary Parkway back over to Maynard. It also is a bit hilly.

I normally ride in Elizabeth City which is flat.... I felt the hills, but it was a great ride. Zonda, THANK YOU for convincing me to do the 32 rather than the 40! I was having a hard time on the last few hills coming back and didn't have any LOWER gears to grind! :) I had a blast and hope to join y'all again soon.
