Ride Monday, Memorial Day, May 28, 9:30 a.m., Rock and Roll to the Rockin’ Comet Diner (http://search.cityguide.aol.com/raleigh/restaurants/rockin-comet-diner/v-109649820?squery=52%3Acityids+AND+45%3Avenuetypeke y&skip=399&uquery=skip%3D390%26stid%3D%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26vf id%3D%26vptid%3D%26) in Clayton for brunch.
Ed, from the Wed. Oh Melo Velo ride, is organizing this ride.
Ride Start: Swift Creek Shopping Center (http://www.swiftcreeksc.com/index.htm) - Tryon Road @ Macedonia Road, Raleigh, NC
Distance: 45 and 54 miles
Pace: 15-16 mph pace for his group. Faster or slower for our group.
Cue Sheet (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=20231)
Outbound route is the same both distances. Two return routes of your choice.
I hope we can get a group to join Ed's group on this ride. The slower riders will leave earlier to arrive at the same time as the faster groups for brunch. I plan to ride the 54 mile route.
RSVP requested to plan riding groups. RSVP by replying to ride announcement thread.

Look, the best I'm going to be able to do is 14-15. Anyone else want to start at 9:00 so we all get in at the same time? The other choice is to drag me with the pack.

I'm with you Charley. Probably 14-15 out and then maybe a little slower back with yummy, greasy breakfast in my belly:D
I wouldn't mind going earlier. Brian is up for whatever too, fast group or sticking with the slow group.

You can have the cue sheet in advance. Ed said the route isn't secret like OMV routes.;)

Well Okay, I'll go with it. How about leaving from the same spot at 9:15 rolling at a 14-15 average. I live pretty close by so I'll probably ride to the ride then split off on the way back or maybe not. It's a pretty easy ride from SCSC to my place and that would certainly be a full metric for the day.
Anyone else? Zonda, you wanted more miles...

Some of us talked about leaving at 9:00. 9:15 doesn't allow enough time for the slower riders to get there at the same time as the fast riders.
I meant more miles than 15-20 each ride. I'm not up to a metric at 14 mph yet. I plan to ride the 54 mile route, maybe 45 miles if the food is good at the diner and I eat too much.

9:00 it is. I'll be there ready to roll. Is there anyplace to get coffee at SCSC? Anyone know if Barry's will be open that early on Memorial day?
There are a couple of steep hills on that route. Ed must be part billy goat. The return route will be great fun:D Really;)
I'm looking forward to this ride...

I don't know, but there is a coffee shop there as well, so something is bound to be open...

I was just looking at this route and we basically ride past our house on the way back. I think we'll try to ride to a point on the route and wait for the slow riders that leave at 9 and then ride with you rather than drive to Swift Creek Shopping Center. It looks like the easiest and safest place to wait would be at the corner of Woodland Road and Timber Drive which you will cross at about 8 miles. There is an Eckerd at that intersection which would probably be a safe place to wait. We'll be sure to get there before you guys and I have Zonda's cell number if something odd happens.
Looking at the mileage again it is only 34 miles to do it the above way, so we may just ride to the start and then cut off at the end which would make it 48 miles. I guess we'll decide on the weekend based on how our legs are doing:D

Charley and I are riding to the shopping center from my house. On the return instead of taking Blaney Franks Rd. toward the shopping center, we will continue on Ten Ten to our homes. Would you and Brian be interested in riding to my house and riding with us to the shopping center? I'm less than three miles from 401/Ten Ten Rd.

That would be great. We probably would ride close to your house to get to the shopping center anyway - we would basically take a left on 1010 to get home instead of a right. You can e-mail or PM me directions and we can decide what time to meet to ride over there.
Ill probably meet up with you guys along the route.
Most likely at the corner of Woodland and Old Stage or maybe Legend Rd and Old Stage

guys - you need to find another way to get back instead of via new bethel. it has been terminated at I-40 due to the Hwy70 Bypass construction/plans.
an alternate might be to make a right on cornwallis which turns into white oak rd then crosses I40. at the corner of white oak/hebron/ackerman there's a convenience store as well.
you could take ackerman to left on bryan rd to right on clifford rd to new bethel. or, hebron ch rd to right on clifford to new bethel.
i'll verify the closing of new bethel at lunch today and see what the roads are like i've mentioned above. i'm pretty sure the roads are ok, as a guy from work rides that area all the time and he's the one who mentioned new bethel being closed and alternate route.
this may shorten or lengthen the ride.

Ive yet to actually see a cue sheet for the 54 mile route.
I'm getting hard copies of the cue sheet for the 54 mile route tomorrow. I can fax you a copy, but I won't have an electronic copy. David is going to Ed's house tomorrow to print them. It's in a different format (Quattro Pro) and David will print them and give them to me. Ed was having a problem coverting them to pdf and that's why it wasn't already available. Let me know if you have a fax machine.
Ed said he hopes we can stay on the route because the area after Bethel is nice. I guess if it's possible we can walk/carry our bikes past the problem area, but feel free to do whatever you want.

has anyone actually checked new bethel out? i was under the impression from the plans, that it was terminated...is there a bridge there, but not to connect the two ends?? if not, ya'll gonna walk across I-40?

i'll try to get out tomorrow and check it out. there's lots of construction/detours going on in that area, so i don't know what it looks like out there.

We are leaving tomorrow at 9:30 with the other group. Since Ed can’t make it, I’m bringing the cue sheets for the other group. We shouldn’t be too far behind them. We will figure out our routes tomorrow since we have people riding to the shopping center, but not returning to the shopping center after the ride.
Me, Charley, Betsy, Brian J. & Andrea are riding to the shopping center. We should be there between 9:00-9:15 barring any problems.
Wear your SS jersey if it’s clean… : ) Bring money for lunch at the Rockin' Comet Diner.
Head count:
Riders: 18
Me
Karen (meeting us along the route)
Charley
Betsy
Brian J.
Jon T.
Rebekah
Mike D.
Boyd
Elaine
Andrea

Jay

Yea.. there's a bridge. I drive underneath it all the time. Basically they tore down the old one and built a new one in it's place. I dont know why they would have built a new bridge if they werent gonna use it.

ok, i went out new bethel today...unless you wanna hike-a-bike down the fill slope and across the unfinished hwy70 bypass, you can't go that way.
when you come to the end of winston, take a right on cornwallis, which turns into white oak at county line. it's about 3.5mi to a left on hebron church road. there are some signs once you get close to hebron pointing to new bethel detour. follow hebron church road till it intersects with new bethel (about 1.2mi) then route is "as is" from that point.
if ya'll are leaving at 9:30, i think i'll just meet you at vandora springs/woodland rd. i think 20mi might be too much for me to do, since i'm only supposed to do 30min of riding, not an hour to 1.5hrs.
it's 7.6mi to vandora/woodland, so ya'll should be rolling by around 10am+/-.

I received the 54 mile route and scanned it to pdf. See attached with notation about route change. Also attached is the alternate route suggested by Karen.
Please Print!
Anyone riding want a TCX file for this route? Im doing one for myself but since Im not riding the whole thing, its not complete.
This is my suggestion for the New Bethel situation. I dont know how it impacts the mileage but the traffic would be much lighter.

I printed a copy. We can discuss it over pancakes and see which route is best. Thanks for the suggestion.

Zonda,
I think ya'll should seriously consider the re-route that Jay has proposed. The Cornwallis/White Oak road is really sh!tty and there's the potential for lots of traffic. The way he proposes to go has a lot less traffic on it.

Jay's way looks like it adds 4-5 miles to the route. Karen's way adds a little over a mile. If you take Karen's way (White Oak Road to Hebron Church Road) you can take a right on Clifford Road and then a right onto New Bethel. This will cut off about 2/10s of a mile rather than just taking Hebron Church. Anyone that rides with Brian and I - we know this area pretty well as we cut through here on a regular basis to get to White Oak Shopping Center.
CharleyM3

Remember that there's about 10 miles of riding around south of ten-ten that can be added too or taken away from to get the mileage that you want.

White Oak seems the simplest/shortest bypass around the obstruction, but I'm not familiar with the area - just looking at the map.

Last count, we had 28 riders including SS and other riders.
Good ride, but too hot. Next year I'll ask Ed if the ride can start earlier to avoid the heat and heavy traffic.

I liked that route, there certainly were a few hills on the way back, along with a bit of a breeze!
I averaged 19.0 on the way out but only 16.0 on the way back.

My ride was cut short on the way back due to a small crash. Had to call in sag support.
I enjoyed it tho.. Team Pink was representin'

i really enjoyed the ride or the part that i got to do. it was so good to be back on the bike and riding with my friends and, of course, rockin' with the rest of Team Pink ;)
i finished up the ride by going back down old garner to guy road and heading home...
17.9 for my trip to the Comet, 11mi.
