No ride Saturday 05/26/07.
We will ride Sunday instead so we can attend the Raleigh Downtown Criterium (http://www.raleighbikerace.com/) Friday 05/25/07, which runs late Friday evening.
RSVP by Saturday, 3:00 p.m. with your route choice if you want to be put in a riding group.
When: Sunday, 05/27/07, 8:00 a.m.
Where:
The Spin Cycle (http://www.thespincycle.com/)
Salt Box Village
1241 Kildaire Farm Road
Cary, NC 27511
Parking is sensitive at the shopping center. Please park away from the shop on the back row near McDonald’s or ride your bike to the shop.
Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1241+Kildaire+Farm+Road,+27511&ie=UTF8&z=15&ll=35.764239,-78.783302&spn=0.015635,0.042915&om=1&iwloc=addr)
Distance:
Charley and I will alternate leading the short route once a month. A short route will be offered on alternate Saturdays if someone volunteers to lead. Sandy will lead this week. Thanks Sandy!
I plan to ride the 54-mile route this Sunday.
10-20 miles (use 31.6 route for out and back or ride on the Cary/Lochmere beginner route)
31.6 miles
42.9 miles
54.4 miles (will use the route Kevin created, but ride in reverse since it was so hilly)
Cue Sheets (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=20232) – TSC Route 1 (Please print)
I will bring a few extra copies for anyone who forgets their cue sheet, but you need to print a copy to bring to the ride.
Pace:
10-12 mph beginners (follows strict no drop policy)
13-18 mph (riders wait at turns for others to catch up)
There are several subgroups for ride paces and distances. Please watch out for others in your subgroup so no one gets dropped. If you can’t keep up, drop back to the next subgroup.
All riding groups will stay together until the designated breakaway point then you can break away into subgroups. Since we are having problems with aggressive drivers in Cary, it is important that we stay together until we get a few miles away from traffic. Drivers tend to harass small groups of cyclists rather than large groups
Contact Person: Zonda. Send me an email or private message (http://www.trianglecycling.com/member.php?u=42) through this site if you have any questions.
Comments:
RSVP requested to help plan riding groups. RSVP by replying to ride announcement thread.
Please arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at the ride start time listed.
Beginners are welcome to join this ride.
If you are new to the group, arrive early to fill out a liability waiver and emergency contact information (if you don't wear a Road I.D. (http://www.roadid.com/))
All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge). Helmets required.
It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license, health insurance card (or a photo copy) and emergency contact information in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.
New riders should read Bicycling Hand Signals and Safety Pointers (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=17385)

Brian and I are planning to ride. Pace and distance TBD, depending on how we do on Saturday. I think we're going to try the cyclepaths ride on Saturday since Slow Spokes isn't riding on Saturday. I don;t think they start until 9 so we can sleep in a little after the late night watching the crit.

I'm in! I kinda feel like I need to do the 40...but I'm still not a speed demon...14.2 is my best average yet. If there are others in my pace, I'd like to do 42, if not I'll do whatever is in my pace. 30-40-50...I feel like I could do 50 at a 12-13 for sure....
My HUSBAND REQUESTS A LONGER ROUTE so he can watch racing uninterrupted....

Yeah, that's probably true! But if I get out of hammering for a little while to ride, he can get out of it a little to watch Indy! :D

I added that this morning in the other thread. from the gas station on 55, we went across to Morrisville Carpenter and followed that to and across 54, where it turns into Aviation parkway....then right onto Evans...through Westin Parkway and Cary Parkway to Maynard. Right onto Maynard slide down one hill and up the other right into the CSH parking lot!

Thanks I did not see it ealier I got it down on paper in case Zonda does not see ut I can tell her. I still think it was way better than using high house even with the two hills. See you Sunday Let me know who your 40 ride goes on sunday. I will be doing the short route

I don't know the area well enough to know if this is a good alternative for us. Michelle/Andrea, what do you think? Anyone else?

I've never been down Aviation & Evans on bike, but I do need to get familiar with it for the Triangle Triathlon in July. Others who have done this race tell me Evans is hilly.

I am going to have to skip this weekend. I have too many unfinished projects at home that need my attention.

Well.. Morrisville-Carpenter and Aviation are a little trafficy there at the light on 54/Chapel Hill, but after that bottle neck it opens back up with a turning lane. Evans is a newer very wide four lane with center turning lane. Hilly is negotiable. That one hill kicked my butt...but I didn't notice another hill. What you don't have on Evans is drivers going into and out of shops, restaurants and gas stations...it is all commercial. It did make our 23 mile route 27 miles. Is it better? I can't say. It definately isn't any worse.

I road up high house the week before and found that a pain in the butt Like I said If I can do the hill on evens and live anyone can I found this route much better than the high house and the contruction part. That little bit of bottle neck was a lot better than that consruction zone we hit when michelle was leading that week it,

The construction zone on High House (where I crashed on the April 21 ride) is no longer a construction zone. The road is paved, the barrels are gone, the pavement and gutters are flush, and the gutters are clear of debris. Without the barrels, the road is actually wide enough for a cyclist and a car in the outside lane.
I did see the evidence of where I crashed when we rode past the spot on Saturday. There is an area on the strip between the curb and the sidewalk where all of the grass and straw are swept down to the bare clay. That is where I slid.

I'm unsure of distance, but I'm leaning towards 31 since I still want to have legs left for the Rockin Comet ride on Monday. Betsy, I'll probably ride whatever distance you're riding :) If you decide on 41, I can probably be talked into it. I'm a Holly Springer, so I plan on waiting at Holly Springs Elementary and picking-up the group there. I'll watch the RSVP list to see who is in which group and blend-in.

From the direction we ride, CSH sits at the top of a hill. No matter how you get back you've got to make some climbs. Just depends on which ones you do. Bess is right about Evans being more commercial. I've ridden it before and its doable. Folks can try it and see how they manage by adding on the extra miles.

If the little hammer in this group can do these hills you big hammers should just kill them and you really don't notice the distance because it is not busy and you can talk along it

I think I'm leaning toward the 30 mile with Andrea on Sunday. I think Brian is still undecided depending on who else rides at his pace.

I'd like to join you, though the 8 am start time makes it a bit of a risk....!
My baseline would be to do the 31 at 13-15. I may be able to do one of the longer routes (especially on the slower end of the pace), but I'm doing Team GSK's 50 on Saturday, and need to see how I feel on Sunday. It would be great to get in a double 50 this weekend, as I'm still stewing over riding the Tour de Cure in 2 weeks.
BetsyW
05-26-2007, 08:34 AM
Brian and I decided not to ride today so I would be up for the 42 tomorrow. It doesn't matter though. I'll do whatever everyone else at the 13-15 pace wants to do.
Gerard

I'll be there to do the 54 mile ride at under 16mph (13-15mph).

I would love to come ride with you on Sunday morning. My average is 13 miles per hour and I'm cycling 14 mile trips. So tomorrow I could try a longer ride at a pace of 12 to 13 miles or I could join a group doing a shorter ride. Whatever fits works for me. Suzanne

Hey Zonda! I just got done shovelling 5 yards of gravel and powerwashing the deck. I'm afraid I might not be able to move my arms tomorrow. So, if I'm not on time....I'm not coming...I don't do late, so don't wait on me. I still hope to make it though! :)

Great ride today. I decide to try to catch the 42 mile group, when the main group got to Apex. But they really hammer, so I never caught up.

Thanks for the great ride Sunday.
I know I have almost no say in this, since I just joined, but I know you were thinking about making sunday morning the regular morning instead of saturday. That would work out great for me, and I know Kathy B said it'd work really well for her too.
Well, I have absolutely no say, since I am yet to join in a group ride. But if this ride were to move to Sunday, it works best for me.
Cheers
