Beginners are welcome to join this ride.
Please arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at 6:00 p.m. If you arrive late, David or Ed will leave cue sheets on their car back window under the wiper blade.
All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge).
It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license and health insurance card in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.

Brian and I will be there. I would volunteer to watch over the 13-15 group, but I'm afraid I am the slowest in that group anyways and I don't really want to ride by myself. I am usually at the back by default:) at 14.5 mph average, so if someone else that can definitely hang with the 15mph people wants to volunteer, that would be great - they could probably ride with me:D .

When you watch over the group, you watch or shadow new riders or anyone who separates from the upper end of the group's pace so they don't get dropped and ride alone. It's not leading at the front, but being willing to ride a little slower at 13 mph if they fall back. If the pace falls below 13 mph, you can wait at a turn and have them drop back to ride with the 10-12 mph group.

Since you are leaving soon, enjoy yourself while you can.:p I'll find someone if we have new riders attending the 13-15 mph group.

I am doing 13-15 this week, too. I cannot ride this weekend - too much to do at the house  but I can ride Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I think I will be pushed on Thursday, so I do not want to go too hard on Wednesday.

I have really enjoyed both the Wed night ride last week and the ride Sunday. Thanks for organizing everything to give riders so many options, Zonda! It really has been a great group to ride with.

It's never too late to RSVP. It's better to let me know upfront than just show up. Also, someone else wanting 18+ mph pace come after seeing that you will be there riding their pace.

We lead the slow group on this ride. There is a fast group of 18+ mph riders who also ride. You can start with them and drop back to one of our groups if you can't hang with them, but I have feeling you'll do fine...;)

Well, this was a tough decision to make but we're not going to be there tonight. We both managed to get the day off and it's our 9 year anniversary so we have made the spontaneous (very unlike us:) - we plan everything! ) decision to go to Busch Gardens for the day. Must try new roller coaster!!! Unfortunately I will most likely not be riding on Wednesdays until after July 4th, but I should be there for most of the weekend rides. Brian will still be there on Wednesdays though. Have fun!! (This means I need to ride tomorrow night so if anyone is interested in sticking with me on the C pace ride at The Spin Cycle at a 14.5 mph pace send me a PM)

Betsy, we missed you and Brian tonight and will miss you during June. Belated Happy Anniversary!!

Looks like David M. arrived right as we were leaving, but decided not to try to catch up. Sorry David.

We provided another drama-filled ride for Jessica tonight. Remember last week Ed crashed then a van turned in front of her causing her to hit the van.

I had my second flat in 7 years! My first one was last July. I have taken The Spin Cycle’s tire changing class twice. During the class Kevin had trouble getting off my tire and said some rims fit tighter than others. I knew I’d be in trouble if I ever had flat.

Andrew helped as Lieutenant for the slow group. He led at the front while I rode from the back. He and Dasa took off ahead on Old Raleigh. Andrew didn’t know we take the slow group through a cutoff on New Dover though a neighborhood since a portion of Old Raleigh is steep and has a very narrow shoulder for new cyclists to maneuver in heavy traffic. Me, Michelle and Jessica took the shortcut. We planned to catch them at Apex Peakway/Old Raleigh. Before we got to Apex Peakway, I flatted…:(

Michelle helped me try to change the tire. We wrestled with it, but couldn’t get it off. We decided Michelle would ride back with Jessica to get her car then drive over to pick me up.

Right then a Land Rover pulls over and a guy and his wife, both cyclists, stopped to help. His name was Gavin. He used to be a hammerhead 20 years ago and recently started cycling again.

Being the strong manly man that he was, he got the tire right off and changed the tube. We thought all was good, BUT the valve stem on my spare tube was about half the length of the one that came off the bike. The valve stem nearly disappeared into the rim and we couldn’t pump it up. I didn’t know they came in different sizes or had adapters for this, gasp!

Gavin told us to hold a minute. He dashed home and came back with a patch kit. Oh yes he did!! He repaired my tube saving the day, my hero!! He said it should be fine to get me back to the shopping center, but he didn’t put much air in it since it was patched. Michelle and Jessica were able to get in a few miles before the turn around time to salvage the ride.

Of course, since Gavin said he recently started back cycling and lives near the ride start, I had to recruit him and give him our website address. He may join us next Wed. He’s an attorney and shared with us some of his stories for handling road rage. It was quite entertaining and I look forward to him joining us. Thank you Gavin!!;)

Jessica, I assure you the rides are usually uneventful. We rarely have problems on our rides.

Fred didn’t make it to the ride, so I assume he’s still banged up from his mountain bike ride.

Lieutenant’s Andrew, Rick, Elaine, Boyd & Jon T., thanks for helping with the 10-12 and 13-15 mph groups!!;)

Also, Michelle made a large poster for all of us to sign for Ed. I’ll visit him this evening and give it to him. Thank you Michelle!;)

We had so many riders, I may have missed a few names.

Didn’t get stats for a few people. Since we have so many riders and this is becoming time consuming, I may have you post your stats after the ride instead of me collecting and posting them.

Jon T. and his harem went to the Ale House after the ride. He talked me into going saying I was a little wound up and needed a beer!! He was absolutely right. We had a lot fun. The harem attendees were his lovely wife Emily, me, Michelle and Rebekah!! :D

Thanks for coming out!

Sounds like the Wed rides are getting a little exciting these days. Zonda now you have had your flat for another 2 years. Thank goodness for Gavin and his know how. That is three flat tires for the slow spoke group in three weeks I hope that the last one for awhile I know I now have two spare tubes plus one on the bike. Zonda you are forever recruiting for the slow spokes the more the merrier

The valve stem nearly disappeared into the rim and we couldn’t pump it up. I didn’t know they came in different sizes ...There are usually about 3 lengths of valve-stem on each shelf, in addition to the size and valve type variations. It is easy to grab the wrong box even after carefully surveying the various merchandise. Every shop - admittedly on north side of town - from which I've purchased a tube has asked some version of "did you get the right length in addition to Presta vs Schrader & tire size / width". The only times not asked is when the "clerk" already knew me, my bike, my wife's bike, and he just checked the box himself without voicing the Q.

Zonda's gang was started to burst at the seams. The 13 to 15 mph is the large one at this point. It was wonderful having Rick and Charley lead the group, I did middle man and Boyd and Jon were at the end. I think it worked out great making sure everyone got in and out and no one got left on the curbside. Even though a large group even on the busy roads it seemed to ride well. Hey Zonda, if you get so many followers are you no longer a gang leader but head of a cult? Unless nothing comes up we plan to be there next Wed. and will help out again. Great ride everyone.

If you're not sure, check with the salesperson. It does help if you know what type of rim you have, or if the LBS salesperson knows.

The Presta tube was marked 48mm on the box, but the Schrader tube (for my hybrid) does not have a stem length marked on the box.I think no one making the Schrader type rims have not gone to that deep-V design so prevalent recently on the Presta road bike rims. (I'm willing to be proved wrong.)

The deep-V designs are what requires the longer stem as the shorter stems won't reach all the way through that deep-V.
