View Full Version : Ride Wed. 06/06/07, 6:00 p.m. Cary/MacGregor Village, Oh Melo Velo, RSVP
Zonda

It’s the first Wed. of the month. Wear your Slow Spokes jersey if it’s clean!!
There is a strict start time of 6:00 by the ride organizer. Be ready and line up in your groups by 5:55.
RSVP by Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. with your riding pace preference if you want to be put in a riding group. This is done to ensure everyone rides with someone at their pace and doesn’t get dropped. With 20-25 riders attending, it has become too chaotic trying to handle unexpected riders a few minutes before the ride while I’m trying to welcome new riders, organize the planned riding groups and get myself ready to ride. If you don’t RSVP so we can plan ahead, you will need to view the list (headcount posted Tuesday after 5:00) and arrive early to find those folks and add yourself to their group.
When: Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m.
Where:
MacGregor Village (http://www.ncbikeclub.org/calendar/ncbcstrt.htm#mcgvl) Cary
Meet in parking lot between Wachovia Bank and Bistro Restaurant. Try to avoid parking near the bank.
Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=101+Edinburgh+Dr+S+Cary+NC)
Distance:
Any distance. Ride ½ your time and U-turn, finish at sunset.
Pace: 4 groups
10-12 mph beginners
13-15 mph
16-18 mph
18+ mph
No drop. Me, Michelle or Rick will alternate leading the 10-12 mph group riding behind the slowest rider. Michelle will lead the 10-12 mph group this week. Me, Brian J., Elaine and Boyd will watch out for the 13-15 mph group this week.
Cue Sheet (provided at ride)
Contact Person: Zonda
Comments:
RSVP requested to help plan riding groups. RSVP by replying to ride announcement thread.
Slow Spokes join the fast Oh Melo Velo (http://ohmelovelo.dnsalias.org/) riders to lead a slow group. See Ed's website Bicycling 2007 section.
Beginners are welcome to join this ride.
Please arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at 6:00 p.m. If you arrive late, David or Ed will leave cue sheets on their car back window under the wiper blade.
All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge).
It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license and health insurance card in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.
New riders should read Bicycling Hand Signals and Safety Pointers (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=17385)

We will not know until David shows up with the cue sheets tonight. My guess, though, is somewhere in southwest Wake County ;)

Hi Zonda,
I'm going to attempt to make it tonight. Andy is sick, so it just me. I'm hoping to keep with the 16-18 group, but we'll see. Two weeks of vacation in Hawaii without my bike might prevent me from that.

I'll be there (Kate D.) as will Jon D. (dluck2) and our friends Bill and Sandy.
Jon will be riding faster than the speed of light.
Bill, Sandy, and I will probably try to hang with the 16 - 18 group but drop back into the 13 - 15 if necessary.

Michelle, thanks for leading the 10-12 mph group!
Lieutenant’s Rick, Elaine, Boyd, Brian J. and Jon T., thanks for helping with the 13-15 mph group!! In lower end of our group (13-14 mph), Jon T. and Brian J. did a great job riding back to check on us and bringing us all back together again. Thanks Elaine & Boyd for watching out for Greg.
Welcome back Andy B., Lori B., Dasa, Liz, Jarred, Kate D., Greg, Bill and Sandy!
Jon D. arrived on his motorcycle toting his bike on the back. What a bad ass!! ;) I took a photo, but it didn’t come out!! Karen also took a photo. Hopefully, hers is o.k. and she can post it.
A few people couldn’t make it or I didn’t see them among all the other people: Jessica, Marsha, Amy, Tamim and Daphne (DSA)
The drama continued. I flatted 4 miles out this week.: ) Last week it was 2.5 miles out. Same as before, my back tire. I had a new tube put in last Friday AND came prepared with a spare tube with the correct sized valve stem, 48 mm instead of 36 mm!! Andy B. quickly came to the rescue and had me up and running in no time. The culprit with having trouble taking off my tire was my yellow tire levers! Andy’s black tire levers looked to be about half the thickness of mine. Mine will be replaced by the next ride! Thank you Andy!!! :D

:D So we all know that on Sunday to get ready for a flat 4 to 6 miles out. This is to make up for the times you never had any for so long. I am glad you had some help and that the black ones worked for you. But look at it this way you will never have to take the flat changing course again:)

Zonda -
before abandoning those yellow levers, try practicing with them at home. Even if you get new, black levers, try practicing at home.
It is much easier to acquire the knack of changing tires if one is learning in the non-pressure environment. On the side of a road when doing a solo ride has more pressure than practicing at home. Doing it on the side of a road while part of a group involves a LOT more pressure - because one inherently does not want to be responsible holding up the group. To change a flat in the middle of a race is only place I can think of that would have more pressure.
Practicing at home is also good because - if you use a frame-mounted tire pump to fill your tube - you can learn how hard you have to pump to get a decent amount of air pressure in your tube.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I assume your tire angel checked the inside of the wheel for "bad spots" that might be poking sharply into your tubes.
When you practice changing tires at home, you also have the opportunity to practice running your fingers around the inside of the wheel checking for sharp things what ought not to be there.

before abandoning those yellow levers, try practicing with them at home. Even if you get new, black levers, try practicing at home.
Thanks for the suggestions, but that sounds like a lot work. If I have extra time at home it will have to be spent cutting my half acre lot, removing weeds, touch up painting, etc., not practicing changing tires!! I've had the tire changing class twice, but I'm glad I've had assistance repairing my flats. I could probably do it, but it would take a while.
My other "excuse";) is that my right wrist is still strained from hyperextending it during the crash. I don't have full strength to wrestle with a tire. It's still painful with certain movements like twisting or pushing open a heavy door. I should probably go to physical therapy, but I haven't had time!! I don't expect anyone to wait on me if have a flat. I'll figure out a way to deal with it. If someone offers to help, I will be grateful and they will always be my hero.;)
I took my bike to The Spin Cycle. I had a small piece of glass in the back tire. The inside of the wheel was o.k. I watched the guys wrestle with the tire while trying to get it off and on. They still say the wheels are a little larger and make it a tight fit. Andy B. didn't seem to have much trouble last night. I do appreciate your help hints and maybe I can try them some time in the future.
Andy B. and Jon T., where did you get the sleek black levers? They didn't have them at TSC.

I've had the tire changing class twice, but I'm glad I've had assistance repairing my flats. I could probably do it, but it would take a while.
I changed one in class, then helped my wife with hers. Then I decided to try what I had learned in my own driveway with only what I had with me. It took half an hour the first time.
When Rebeka flatted on the way back on Memorial day, I had her changed and on the road in 5 minutes. However, I forgot to check inside the tire for the source of the flat. She flatted again on the following Wednesday because I only did half the job.:o There was something inside the tire. Shame on me for not getting it right the first time. I learned a lesson at her expense. I appologize. I won't cut corners again.
