This group has gone through many changes since its creation in February 2005, starting with less than ten members. Today we have 244 members who have signed up on our new forum since January 2007. We had about this same number on our old Google Group before the switch.

I continue to be amazed at the success of this group. A group that was not expected to get off the ground, much less impact the cycling community as it has. We have a great group of people who have contributed their time and skills to make this group what it is today. It’s time to make some changes again.

I have decided not to continue organizing two rides a week. Initially, I started the regular rides in Cary to build up ridership. We have done that! I started the shop rides last fall and this spring because the two bikes shops agreed to be paying sponsors. This enabled us to purchase jerseys at a lower cost because we could use the money received from them and three other sponsors to offset the high cost of the first order for jerseys. I intended to organize OMV and shop rides through the end of September. However, the growth of the group has become so large that it’s taking all of my free time to meet the demands.

I will continue organizing the Wed. ride. I will organize the Sunday shop rides through the end of June. I think my time is better spent welcoming new riders and doing other things to provide an encouraging and supportive environment for new members, which I feel is a contributing factor to our success.

I still want to ride on weekends, but want more flexibility to catch up on personal matters that I have put off for months to keep up with the demands of the group. Since we won’t be tied to riding in Cary, we can have a rotating schedule from various locations. This will be better for riders outside Cary who have been commuting a long way to ride with us each week.

Earlier in the year I suggested that others could organize rides on the same day as the Slow Spokes core rides because the group had grown so much and is spread out that it’s not realistic to expect everyone to ride in the same location each week. We have so many new riders since then who may not know this. Someone said last night others might not have done this thinking they may step on someone’s toes. I take this as a good sign that we have many other leaders waiting to step up and the group will be stronger and better with this change.

I hope others will organize rides either from Clayton, north Raleigh, Wendell, Durham, etc. or from the shops since we already have cue sheets. NCBC also has a lot of cue sheets (http://www.ncbikeclub.org/queue_sheets/ncbcqueue.htm) on their website that can be used.

I think this will be a good thing for our group and we will be stronger and better for making the change. So, this is a very heartfelt, “stick a fork in me, I’m done!!” I just can’t keep up with everything any longer.

I would like to solicit your thoughts/comments on how we can continue to offer regular weekend rides.

Who wants to be the first person to step up and organize a weekend ride so we can start planning for July?

Thank you all for your contributions to this group. It is where it is today because of you!

Hey Zonda. Let me say a great big thanks to YOU for all you have done for the group. Your leadership has brought it to where it is today. I will be glad to step up and lead a ride on Sunday July 8th..unless someone else really wants thtat date. Not sure where we'll leave from yet, but probably in the Cary area. If someone wants to post a ride from another area that day, please feel free to do so. I won't be offended :)

I also want to challenge other members of the SS forum to step up and lead a ride. I probably won't be as organized as Zonda, but I'll do my best to make sure everyone has a good ride. If I can do it...so can you!

Zonda you are the best and thanks for all you have done. You have done more than you can ever imagine Don't forget you have to now do all that yard work and you can't use the group to get out of it:D :D I hope I can be even a 1/4 as good at this as you have been

We ride pretty much every weekend, now that the remodling on the house is slowing down. Would the best process be to put a ride you are willing to head up on the group and let people respond? Like this Saturday we are going to hit some of the bigger hills, the pace would not be fast (13-15) leaving early 7am to miss the heat. Going to do about 50 miles with some breaks. Anyway let me know what you think. I know we are herd animals by nature.

Hey Elaine. That is great. I think if you'll add where to meet and if you'll provide cue sheets that am or post them online You'll have it out there. Thanks to you and Boyd for steping up!

Hi Zonda...I want to say thanks for all you've done. All healthy organizations have to change in order to continue to grow. I've only been riding with the group a few weeks, but it's a testament to all your hard work that I enjoyed myself from the first mile.

I'd be glad to take a Sunday in July. As a Durhamite, I may be able to add some location diversity, but would like feedback first. Would folks be inclined to travel (or *disinclined* to travel) to any of these?

Meet in Chapel Hill or Carrboro and ride some very pretty (and a bit hilly!) countryside in Orange County

Meet in east Durham off Hwy 98 and ride around the Falls Lake area - again, some pretty countryside and a few hills

Meet in RTP and ride around the Park - not so pretty, but fairly flat, and very light traffic

Thanks,
Kathy

Thanks Michelle, Sandy, Elaine and Kathy for the suggestions and stepping up.

I don't mind driving to other locations to ride. I prefer riding from different locations than riding the same route every week.

Since gas prices are so high, that might deter a few people, but it's worth a try. I think you will lose some riders, but also pick up a few riders. I think the Falls Lake area is beautiful. I'd be interested in a ride there. If you want to lead another one later, have it in Durham. Attendance increases as people get to know you and what to expect on your rides.

See the link for the March 3 (http://www.trianglecycling.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=40&day=2007-3-3&c=1) and March 17 (http://www.trianglecycling.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=53&day=2007-3-17&c=1) rides in north Raleigh.

Skiffrun made some comments I think about the March 17 routes. There may have been problems. I can't remember. It was either too cold or it rained, so we haven't ridden these routes. He is very familiar with the routes up there and maybe he can help us avoid potential problems with the routes.

I had an email from someone thinking I wanted to franchise the weekend rides to someone else. I only want to stop organizing two rides a week to lighten my schedule. After 3 months of doing this, it's exhausting.

When OMV ends Sept 29, I'll organize weekend rides again through the fall and winter, but may not commit to every weekend like I have in the past. I still want to ride in other locations and hope others can host rides in the fall and winter.

Zonda I found a cue sheet from the NCBC riders and I am going to check it out It looks to be a ride the slow spokes have not done. I have collected a lot of cue sheet over the past 4 years. I guess if the other locations don't work we can always go back to the shop rides in cary since we have those cue sheet already posted. I guess we will have to see how things work out. Thats what happenes when it comes to being popular. They only want you and nobody else:D

I may have to get back with you when it is closer to july 22 to figure out how to post the thingAlready have the waiver and possible start point.:)

I thnik we can do this

Kathy - we love to ride in Chapel Hill and out that way. There are some great routes. Doesn't the Tarwheels have cue sheets on their site? It is a great area to ride in and yes it is a bit hilly and great for riding.

I spoke to David about the waiver. It is not required by NCBC, but at the discretion of the leader. I started using it after we had our first crash last October since I lead rides every week.
