View Full Version : Ride Wed. 06/20/07, 6:00 p.m. Cary/MacGregor Village, Oh Melo Velo, RSVP

Zonda
06-16-2007, 05:10 PM
There is a strict start time of 6:00 by the ride organizer. Be ready and lined up in your groups by 5:55.

RSVP by Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. with your riding pace preference if you want to be put in a riding group. This is done to ensure everyone rides with someone at their pace and doesn’t get dropped. With 20-25 riders attending, it has become too chaotic trying to handle unexpected riders a few minutes before the ride while I’m trying to welcome new riders, organize the planned riding groups and get myself ready to ride. If you don’t RSVP so we can plan ahead, you will need to view the list (headcount posted Tuesday after 5:00) and arrive early to find those folks and add yourself to their group.

When: Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m.

Where:
MacGregor Village (http://www.ncbikeclub.org/calendar/ncbcstrt.htm#mcgvl) Cary

Meet in parking lot between Wachovia Bank and Bistro Restaurant. Try to avoid parking near the bank.

Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=101+Edinburgh+Dr+S+Cary+NC)

Distance:
Any distance. Ride ½ your time and U-turn, finish at sunset.

Pace: 4 groups
10-12 mph beginners
13-15 mph
16-18 mph
18+ mph

No drop. Me, Michelle or Rick will alternate leading the 10-12 mph group riding behind the slowest rider. I will lead the 10-12 mph group this week. Need Lieutenants to help watch over the 13-15 mph group. Any volunteers?

Cue Sheet (provided at ride)

Contact Person: Zonda

Comments:

RSVP requested to help plan riding groups. RSVP by replying to ride announcement thread.
Slow Spokes join the fast Oh Melo Velo (http://ohmelovelo.dnsalias.org/) riders to lead a slow group. See Ed's website Bicycling 2007 section.
Beginners are welcome to join this ride.
Please arrive in time to prepare your bike to leave promptly at 6:00 p.m. If you arrive late, David or Ed will leave cue sheets on their car back window under the wiper blade.
All riders should carry proper equipment in case they have a flat (spare tube, pump or CO2 cartridge).
It is strongly recommended that you carry your driver’s license and health insurance card in case of an emergency. You may also want to program your cell phone with an emergency contact number under the name “ICE” In Case of Emergency.
New riders should read Bicycling Hand Signals and Safety Pointers (http://www.trianglecycling.com/showthread.php?t=17385)

Hi Slowpokers!

I will be there for the ride. I'll be in the beginner ride since this will be my first ride with all of you. Looking forward to it. Still pretty new with my pedals and will probably show up with knee pads and elbow pads in case I might have a fall; which is very possible. :o

Hi Angie - welcome to the board and I hope we'll see you out riding with us soon.

I'm wondering if you might want to wait until you are a bit more comfortable in your riding skill before you join a group ride. If you really think it is quite possible you might fall over it won't be just you but the riders in front of or behind you that could get injured, and I'm sure you wouldn't want that.

Also, we do ride on public roads and in traffic, so again if you are concerned about your stability at this point maybe you don't want to put yourself in a position where you are getting passed by cars, etc.

Ha Angie Welcome aboard

I was wondering is the bike new or just the pedals. Have you worked the pedals in a parking lot and quick stops also. If you want just a suggestion the group will also be riding this coming sunday. There is quit a bit less traffic on that day and that maybe a better ride for you to work out the bugs with the pedals as well

Hey Guys,
I'm going to take off my clip pedals and put back my other pedals. I've ridden in traffic before and in small groups but since it's been a while since I've been on the road I will use my regular pedals. Don't want to run the risk of falling and possibly hurting others. I appreciate your concerns. Thanks

A word to the wise...

the 18+ group is generally NOT a no-drop group, as the majority of these riders are not "Slow Spokes" members from what I've noticed...

We've had several people the last few weeks get dropped from this group...some mistakenly thinking there was a no-drop policy in effect, causing some harsh feelings.

Hi Zonda,

Andy and I should be there on Wednesday night, both in our usual groups. He in the 13-15 range, me in who ever I can keep up with 16-18+.

That's a good point. If you are riding 18+ you aren't a beginner and don't need the security blanket of a no-drop. I think it is appropriate that we focus our support efforts on the 10-12 and 13-15 categories.

16-18 tends to get pretty spread out as well.

Tamim, thanks for pointing out this situation.

For anyone who doesn't know the history of the Oh Melo Velo ride:

The OMV ride is a time trial type ride at 17-22 mph that has been going on for more than 20 years. The OMV hammerheads never follow no drop and expect to ride as fast as they can each week.

We were invited to join their ride to lead a slow group. My vision of the Slow Spokes was for a beginner and D paced group, which we have far exceeded. I don't want anyone dropped out in the middle of no where, but I can see how our fast riders comingling with the OMV hammerheads can present a false perception that riders stay together.

I agree that the 18+ mph group doesn't need the same attention as 15 mph and under. Most riders at that level tend to fend for themselves.

The good thing is that we are all on the same route and you can drop back to the next group if you can't keep up. It's hard to organize a ride to please everyone, particularly when we are trying to cover paces from 10-20 mph. The best solution I can suggest is to find someone listed on the head count riding 18+ mph to see if they want to ride together.

If anyone else has suggestions, please share them.

I went out with Jessica, Marsha, and Rebekah. We turned around at 19.2 miles and had averaged 16.0 to that point. On the way back, Marsha and Rebekah went on with a faster group, and Jessica and I rode back with Charlie and Amy. My stats were:

Distance 38.4
Pace: 15.1
Time: 2:32

Jessica's stats should be about the same as mine. There were several mechanicals this evening. I saw two or three flats and Jessica had a pedal fall off. Charlie fixed it, and we were back on the rood in short order.

According to my 'puter I averaged 15.2 for 37.5 miles. About 2:25 of wheels going round.
Amy and I stuck together. She was having a bit of front deraileur trouble at the end that slowed her down. Good riding with you Amy. Jessica and Rick waited for us at stategic locations, like across major intersections. Thanks.
Anyone who wants to, send me a PM or email and I'll build up a stats post or, of course, feel free to post them here.

I had a good ride, Brian had 2 flats and went through a bunch of tubes. I rode with Dasa (I think) on the way out because at my 14.8 average I could not keep up with the 13-15 group that was going 16:eek: . We ran into Gerard and Wayne for a little while and Charley caught up to us after stopping to help with a mechanical. Rebecca and Marsha rode back in with us.

I ended up with 37.61 miles 14.3 average, 2:38. Brian was 37.95 miles, 19.1 average, 1:59 (on the bike).

3MTA3,

Whenever I see "MTA", I can only think of The MTA Song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_MTA_Song

I guess my age is showing, but I used to take the MTA out to Jamacia Plain. The first time I did so, and not being from Boston, I was very surprised when the conductor made me pay to get off the train. Fortunately, I did have a dime, but that was about all I had.

Stat's for last night were 43.7 miles, 18.6 mph average, and time of 2:17. The group I rode with broke up and came back together and broke up again. In the end it ended up being Suzanne, Madeleine, Frank and myself finishing up together. It was good ride even if I did feel like someone was trying to kill me coming back on Olive Chapel.. Although we did have to question if we were seeing things when we saw Brian J with his first flat and then coming back after the turn and seeing him changing another one. Glad he had plenty of cartridges to take care of it.
