DISCOVERY CHANNEL PRO CYCLING ANNOUNCES
2007 TOUR DE FRANCE TEAM ROSTER
(Austin, TX) – The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team (DCPCT) announced today its roster of riders who will compete in the 94th edition of the Tour de France, beginning in London, England on July 7th and finishing in Paris on July 29th. DCPCT Sports Director Johan Bruyneel made the announcement today by phone to the media and listed the nine-rider team as follows: Levi Leipheimer, Alberto Contador, Vladimir Gusev, George Hincapie, Egoi Martinez, Benjamin Noval, Sergio Paulinho, Yaroslav Popovych and Tomas Vaitkus.
The nine-man DCPCT squad will be led by 2007 Amgen Tour of California Winner Levi Leipheimer and backed by a mix of seasoned Tour de France veterans and rising talent. In 2007, Team Discovery Channel will focus on a high overall placing for Leipheimer, as they did with seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong, however, the DCPCT does have other goals.
“I am going into this Tour de France with three goals in mind. First, and most important, I want to have Levi on the podium in Paris. He has been three times in the top-10 and I think he has the form and experience to be there,” said Sport Director Johan Bruyneel. “Beyond that, I would like to win at least one stage and also have Alberto Contador win the Best Young Rider competition. That is of course a lot to ask of one team but I think it is possible given the amount of talent we have on our roster. I would even say that a fourth goal is to wear the leaders jersey too, but for me that is not a major focus unless it is because we are wearing it into Paris.”
The 2007 Tour de France route is 3,547 km in length (2,204 miles) and consists of one prologue time trial and 20 stages broken down as: eleven flat stages, six mountain stages (three mountain-top finishes), one medium mountain stage and two individual time trials.
“This is my year to make that next step and be a true contender at the Tour de France. I feel like the past five years have been an education in how to race and prepare for the Tour and now I am 100% ready. Johan has selected an amazing group of riders to support me and I could not be happier,” stated Levi Leipheimer. “There is no race out there like the Tour de France and until you have been through it you cannot know how hard it is and how best to prepare. There are more guys ‘peaking’ for the Tour than in any other race, and if you are not on top of your game you will be left behind. I have had a great season so far and done a lot of work on my time-trialing, both in the wind tunnel and in my workouts. I will be ready to go in London.”
Experience and youth will play a vital role in the team’s success in 2007. Team Discovery Channel’s Tour de France roster has 44 “grand tours” under their belt, 25 of those coming from Tour de France participation. George Hincapie leads the team having competed in 11 Tours. To date, in 2007, the 29-man Discovery Channel Team has compiled five overall (stage race) victories, 14 stage wins and 44 total podiums.

Their best shot at the podium. And a reasonable shot at that.
> Alberto Contador
If I were Johan, I'd be looking to Contador not just for the young rider
jersey, but as a shadow for Vino in the mountains. No matter what Vino does,
put Contador on his wheel. It might blow Contador's chances for stage wins,
but it might demoralize Vino. But then you've still got Kasheckin to worry
about.
> George Hincapie
A stage win maybe? But hard to believe he'd have help from the rest of the
team in that regard. He'd have to become quite the opportunist, and he's
certainly not going to take one in an all-out mass sprint these days.
> Yaroslav Popovych
Undeniably strong and could make the difference for Levi, keeping him
sheltered and safe. Could be the future, but probably not for Discovery.
> Vladimir Gusev
Go man go! I figure Gusev to be more-likely than George to pull off a stage
win, almost accidentally. He'll just happen to sneak into the right break at
the right time, and since he won't be a threat on the GC...
> Egoi Martinez
Has been showing a lot of strength lately. Hadn't paid attention to him in
the past, but he's looking good.
> Sergio Paulinho
Don't know much about him other than being a climber and taking a silver at
the Olympics. Guess he takes the place of Padrnos?
> Tomas Vaitkus
Big guy (6'1" 176lbs) to draft behind?
> Benjamin Noval
Reliable worker
So who's been left off?
Padrnos. A bit of a surprise; seemed to be the ultimate selfless worker,
always fetching bottles, never seeming to tire or question the mundane life
of the domestique.
Danielson fell ill, Matty White's getting a bit slow, Rubiera being saved
for the Veulta?
Overall looks like a pretty strong team. How things will go against Astana
will likely determine the race.

I don't know, Greg. Is this what people consider original?
http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4080579
I can't have seen that picture more than, what?, a few hundred times.
That site reminds me of my Pop's photo club critiques. Not a "That
sucks" to be found, and way too many, "Gee, that's just dandy!"
Overexposure is never a good thing.

You really are going to post this to every thread
until the TdF prologue, aren't you?
It's not incredibly clever as photo-illustration, but
if it's the only thing you can say about bike racing,
we accept it as your contribution. Do you have anything
useful to say about how to fix what you see as the
problem?
We know a lot of them dope. What's impressive, however,
is how the anti-doping authorities and the UCI are
conspiring to make the races a bigger farce than doping
ever made them, by arbitrary rules, leaking test results,
and petulant spats between the organizers and the UCI.

No, I hadn't planned on it until someone made a comment about it.

Not clever?!? Flandis' Tour de Farce number plate isn't clever? Ouch. I'm
devastated.

I can say alot. I've been following cycling for 35 years, much longer than
most Iowans.

I say let them all dope, it's their bodies. Seriously, I'm not a physician,
biochemist, or physiologist so, no, I don't have anythying useful to say.
Two things I would like to see; that the riders are sure of a level playing
field, and that GC results for tours aren't changed after the final stage
has been finished.

No arguments there, my commentary isn't directed at the riders but at the
organizers. Unfortunately I didn't have the materials on hand to better
convey that.

Yes, especially after his stellar "Tour de Suisse"...odd...maybe he
doesn't want to sign the "contract".

Good Devolder item at

He'd rather than be a protected rider @ Vuelta than a domestique @
TDF. Seems believable to me.

So you can't be bothered to express what you want to say so you repeatedly post
a photo that says something different but is eloquent.
Why not just cut and paste sonnets or monty python dialogue then?

Or maybe he doesn't want to play second fiddle to Levi. But I thought
he was one of the strongest for Discovery. Hopefully he'll be a late
replacement.

His site seemed to express some disappointment, but mentioned the
Vuelta. Could be some interesting stories re. the Vuelta team: maybe
no Contador (he's shooting for best young rider at TdF), Danielson and
Brajkovic seem to be in the doghouse (illness and injury,
respectively), possibly Devolder could play a big role...

According to http://tt.vrt.be/tt_een.php?p=429&g=0&s=1&r=0&x=1 it was
his own decision to do the Vuelta and not the Tour. It says team
management wanted to persuade him but he stayed with his original
plan. Strange. Smells a little like bull****.
