View Full Version : New PC-59 chain is noisy
bw2117@yahoo.com

I replaced my chain, cassette and middle chainring (the others were
not worn), and I still have more chain noise than I would like. Chain
is PC-59, Campy 13-28 9 speed cassette, Campy triple crank. I have
adjusted the rear der cable tension and the B-tension screw, checked
the tightnesss of the cassette lock ring, rd bolt and jockey pulley
bolts. Still have a constant noise, like a tinny clacky noise in all
gears. I turned the bike over and the noise seems to occur as the
chain leaves the upper jockey wheel going to the cassette. But I do
not see any bad teeth or excess play in the jockey wheel. Rear der is
1999 Mirage model.
Other than trying a new chain, what else could be wrong? Thanks.

Bent derailleur mount? Bent derailleur? Bent cage? Worn pulleys?
Chainline issues; same noise in a middle gear? 'Dry' chain lube?
An experienced bicycle mechanic who commonly services bicycles should be
able to tell you with a minute's observation/listening.

In my experience, the loudest chain noises occur from centering error
of the rear derailleur. Does it occur in all gears, or only some ??
Perhaps you should adjust the derailleur centering to be perfect
within the gears that you use most.

When my chain is too noisy, I take out my hearing aids.

I had a lot of noise when I replaced my chain and cassette. It seemed
to be coming from the jockey wheel, so I installed a new set of
pulleys, and the noise went away. There was no visible sign of tooth
wear. After trying everything else which posters have suggested, you
might try replacing the pulleys.

Hi there.
This sound that you hear would not be the Campy freehub ratcheting
would it? I find my Veloce 9 gear freehub to be fairly noisy and
'clacky' is a good description of the sound it makes.

Try some more oil, then go through the steps Muzi mentions. You may
also have misadjusted your cable tension on the derailleur. Let it go
slack, then try again. Sometimes I can get your clacking when the
cable tension is too high. -- Jay Beattie.

Jay, thanks for the suggestion. I readjusted the cable tension, and
the
noise is gone!

You people and your "cable tension". Drives me fuggin nuts. The
cable tension is based on the spring in the derailleur. When you
lengthen the cable path by adjusting either of the barrel adjusters
(on der, or downtube) the tension remains basically constant, the
position of the derailleur changes.
PLEASE don't say this any more. How about describing it as what the
hell it really is, i.e., POSITIONING THE DERAILLEUR PROPERLY!

In the heat of my foaming rant I hit the wrong keys. Anyhoo, if you
properly describe what is going on, the readers will understand more
clearly the solution and more about their bikes in general.
Clarity and correctness lead to understanding. Obfuscation and
misdirection lead to Republicanism.

I agree that is a incorrect description what is happening. It is voodoo
