Does anyone have experience running a Campy 13/29t with a standard
53/39t crankset? I have a set of wheels that I am considering using for
rides with significant climbs. I normally run a 12/25. I was curious
about shifting with this large of a cog.

Thanks

I've used a 13-28 9 speed cassette with a 53-39 crankset and a short
cage 1998 Chorus rear derailleur. No problems. I've used a 13-29 10
speed cassette with a 48-30 crankset and a medium Centaur 9 speed rear
derailleur. And the 13-29 10 speed cassette with a 46-30 crankset and
a long cage Veloce rear derailleur. All worked just fine.

No problem. Why do you think Campa sells something that doesn't shift?

It'll work just great and no need for the mid cage RD s long as the
chain length is proper for the 12-25. Done this many times and have 2
demo bikes with this very setup.

That's what I have on my PX-10, with a short cage Centaur. Works fine.

I'm concerned about cage length. I have read that short cage derailleurs
with this large of a cassette difference can cause wear on the
derailleur unless you stay away from the cross-combos.

I wouldn't worry about that. When Campy first introduced its 13x29 cassette,
back in 2000 or 01, it only had a short cage rear der available, so that was
what was recommended. I say go for it. If problems arise, THEN get a medium
cage. No use spending extra $$$ if you don't have too!

See Russells answer. I don't understand why people keep buying short
cage RD and asking themselves this question over and over again. Get a
medium cage RD from the start and you are done..

Well, not exactly..2000 had Racing triple which was the same length as
the now mid cage Rder...

But the medium cage der is five grams more!!!

And it doesn't matter whether you have a short or med cage der, you
should never be cross chained.

And if you do run your short cage der with the 29, you may have to
shorten your chain to accomodate the 29 tooth cog with the short cage.

Speaking of witch, does anyone know if it's posible to buy a Chorus medium
cage as spare part? I'm stuck with a short cage and 50/34-12/25 and
would like to to 13/29 before a trip to the alpes later this month.

Yes. It's part RD-CH302M. See
http://www.campagnolo.com/pdf/spares07_A_0307.pdf

But it is hard to get and expensive. For the rare occasion you can get a
cheap Veloce RD. Then you have a spare RD as well.

Yes but it's the entire cage assembly along with the pulleys and all
and very expensive. For just a few bucks more you can buy a whole RD.

Dude, convert! I have a Shimano XT rear setup hooked up to Ultegra
road shifters on my winter bike, 50x34 in front and 11-32 in back. It
is the bomb. And you'd have the 50x11 to rock the descents.

Seriously, it works quite well and I would recommend it for anyone
thinking of buying a hideous-looking, giant Q-factor, poor-shifting
triple setup. I did mull over getting one of those downhiller-style
medium cage XT rear derailleurs, since my plan was to have a shorter
total range on the cassette, 13-14-15-16-18-20-24-28-32, but we could
not find a shimano terminal 13 cog anywhere. I guess if it were Campy
you could order that 20 years from now. (One bike shop said "compacts
are for women!" in response to my gearing plan.)--Shayana Kadidal

Agree, but back then the Racing Triple rear der was consider a *long*
cage...
