I was fortunate this past Tuesday riding up Norwood, then on Six Forks, left on Durant and right on Brassfield. As I approached the four way stop at Brassfield school my right shoe lace got tangled in the large chain ring and my lace started winding around the pedal! I was able to stop, get the shoe lace out without a major mishap. I dread to think what would have happened earlier out on Six Forks.
For now, it's a stap around the laces until I decide to get a pair of strap riding shoes.
I hadn't forseen this happening and wonder how many other little things can end up being important saftey issues.

That is why most cycling shoes have straps (or at least a strap that covers the knot and loose ends of the laces). Be sure to tie your shoe with the knot towards the outside of the shoe instead of in the center. If the loose ends are long, double knot the laces.

My cycling shoes have laces, but have a cover over the laces. I always make sure the laces are tucked under the cover on both shoes. I used to tuck extra lace down inside the shoe on a pair of shoes I used years ago that had no cover for the laces - choose someplace that won't chafe your foot.

I once rode with someone on a tandem (chains on both sides) who got laces caught in the left chain.

I test software for a living, so I am a bit 'fussy' about some things.

If I ride with lace shoes I pull the loop all the way to the tip of the string and then stuff the loop into my shoes. That way the lace is not flopping around.
