Shimano Compatibility

One of our fleet of bikes looks like it needs a new rear derailleur. I have
read the Shimano Compatibility Charts that I found at:

along with Sheldon's site. I am still a bit confused and want to make sure
that I get the right part. The bike is a cross bike with:

Shimano Ultegra ST 6510 shifters
FSA 46-32 crank
Shimano 105 5501 rear derailleur
Shimano 9-speed cassette

Looking at Sheldon's site it seems that any post 1997 Shimano rear
derailleur will work. Does everyone agree?

A somewhat related question. What parts would need to be changed to go from
a compact double to a triple? The specific parts on the bike are:

Shimano Ultegra ST 4400 shifters
Shimano FD 6500 front derailleur
FSA 50-34 crank
Shimano 105 5501 rear derailleur
Shimano 9-speed cassette

saint and hone rds won't work. you also have to care somewhat about
cage length. unless you randomly have an mtb cassette on the bike, you
need an ss (shortcage) rd.

can't tell if you know this or not from your phrasing, but the only
post-indexing, pre-97 ones that won't work are dura ace.

4400 is tiagra. you will probably want a triple fd. "probably" because
there are some triple setups where it's not necessary or optimal, but
these are the exception, and not the case with any recent stock road
triple. fd-6503 would be the equivalent quality one, but is it out
production along with the 9spd 105 and da fds, 5503 and 7703. 4503
tiagra is the highest end 9spd one currently made by shi, and the
distinction between 9 and 10 matters in this case. also, all the
current shi triple fds except for 2200 also have a shape that keeps
them from working unmodified with all the millions and millions of
inane 52/42/30 that were the standard road triple offering from
shimano and others until recently. so really you should just do
nothing but write shimano nasty letters instead of riding bikes.

you also would want a gs (midcage) rd if you don't have one. if the
new large ring is larger than your 50, the chain will need lengthening
if it's currently the correct length.

Any shimano RD will work as long as it is NOT a DA 8s rear
derailleur..last made in 1996.

Ensure left shifter is a triple one(should say on it), BB, crank, FD
and best with long cage RD.
