selecting a BB

I'm upgrading the drivetrain of my '85 Mondonico to Campy 10 speed. I
have a very recent Record 10 speed double crank, and the frame has
Italian (duhh!) threading, and I know it needs a 102 mm spindle.

There aren't many BB choices, but still ... should I get Record?
Chorus? Token? Phil? Light weight is significant but more important
is durability, especially when higher cost seens to get lower
durability, as with a Record.

Is this durability concern just a smokescreen? I won't be racing the
bike and I'm not hard on things. Sometimes I pedal hard enought to
flex the BB but not usually. I'm certainly not a sprint monster.

I'm tending toward a Chorus or a Token, mainly due to price and
weight. But if there's no liability to putting in a Record I might
get a low-mile used one if I believe I found one.

What about Token durability? Does everything fit right relative to
original Campy? Is there an extra benfit, perhaps chainline
adjustment?

Record has a lighter spindle than Chorus, otherwise idential in terms
of bearings. The durability with Record and Chorus is the same since
same bearings. Phil is a nice unit and as Record/Chorus BBs get a wee
bit scarce(more expensive), Phil becomes a nice choice..what I have on
my rain bike.

See above..NO difference in durability between Record and Chorus(never
heard of Token)..don't know ehere this info comes from. NOT in our
expoerience at all.

My vote goes to Phil Wood. It weighs less than Campy and will
practically last forever. I know this first hand as I had to replace a
Record BB because it had gotten corroded due to water
contamination.The only drawback to the PW is that you'll need to buy
the retainer rings separately as well as the installation tool. I have
a stainless steel PW 102 Campy BB with 5000km I want to sell. I want
to sell it as it's just sitting around gathering dust ever since I
replaced it with a PW 110.5 to run a Campy triple crank. Send me an

The "charges" against the Record come from a few posts on
Bikeforums.net. I don't have an axe to grind, I just want a light,
slick reliable set of gear. I can forward some of the info back-
channel if you want to get into it.

since the frame chainlines correctly with its original Shimano 600
gruppo, and it's getting an alignment check along with its cold-
setting, done by an expert. It will be in line when I do the build.
I'll get either Doug Fattic, Ron Boi, or Franklin Frames to do the
work unless anyone has another good suggestion for the Michigan/
Northern Midwest area.

If you are reffering to Gary and procycling on eBay then I highly recommend
him and his stuff. I built a bike with campy last year and used one of the
token campy BB's and it was fine to install and the guy using the bike has
had no problems in over a year and daily use in all sorts of condtions.

Our info, after selling lots of Record and Chorus BBs, is what we go
with. We haven't seen any less durability with Record than we Chorus,
what you would expect since the bearings and general design is
identical. Not familiar with Token, never seen one. Did go to the web
site, but happy with Campag(and Phil) units so as long as they are
still available, what we will stock.
