View Full Version : Black North Road bar or similar?

It's not critical, but would look right. I'm thinking the Dimension
"double bend urban bar" flipped to rise might be the trick.

Jamis specs a black NR bend bar on their "commuter" series. Shame as
we've got no Jamis dealer, as you bet your butt they'ed have some in
the ****itbucket.

This looks pretty good, I was just looking for a more natural hand
position:

Well, I think I've settled on the most low-brow of options, a Wald #
8095 in chrome steel. It's wider than the Nitto, shiny, and only ten
bucks.

Check here: http://www.origin-8.com/
under "urban" bars.
Pick between the Tiki or the Space bar. They both look pretty nice, at
about $25 each.

Unless you are a tough guy (or misfits fan). Then look here:
http://www.misfitpsycles.com/
for the $50 FUbar

The Space Bar looks pretty much bang on the money what I need. Thanks!

Are those 25.4mm clamp or 26.0mm clamp bars? It'll be helpful if the
website mentionedsome specs, instead of being so busy with Flash animations.

Sure, got one.

They're a bit ugly, those bars but that's a nice compromise between
the North Road angle and a mtb riser bar. On my last city bike, I'd
switch back and forth between shortened flat and NR, the latter being
oh-so-comfy, and the former being great for urban lane splitting.

Andrew, do you remember if the Nitto North Road are a good bit wider
than the chrome stock on the Raleighs?

Take heed! According to Origin-8, that bar "uses road brake levers"--
which is one of the main reasons I avoid cowhorns and mustaches. On-
One's Mary Bar (black, of course) is about the same shape (roughly 40
degrees of sweep) but fits normal levers and shifters.

It's a Mary clone, and I see nothing that states that it would use
roadie kit. The shape isn't even conducive to it. 25.4 clamp as well.

The Tiki on the other hand, is yet another moustache clone like On-
One's Mungo, and it's 26.0 and takes road levers. I've got the
Dimension m-bar on my current ride and love it,btw. The flats are a
couple inches longer than the Nitto Bar, which makes a good bit of
difference.

Space bar quite clearly states that it's a 25.4 and the "Tiki" a 26.
Seems like everybody's doing a clone these days. LBS had a "Soma"
branded Dimension moustache bar yesterday for twice the price--didn't
know silkscreening was so spendy.

Silkscreening is *everything*! How else will people know you spent

Well I can't be too bitter about it, they ordered one for ****s and
giggles after seeing me out and about using one sans logos. I saw it
in one of the non-QBP catalogs, and it's indeed, the only version of
that shape offered. Anything to get folks out of the handlebar rut--it
seems the vast majority of roadie poseurs never use their drops anyway
these days, and ride a frame two sizes too small. Heck, the LBS was
incredulous that I wanted a 60cm frame, and I'm 6'1"--no wonder you
get all these amusing posts on mtbr.com about "lame" and "bendy"
seatposts. But I digress...

Well, not bitter, but bemused......amazing how the same product can
appear with different branding, some screened on, some not, at such
wildly differing prices. Strange, IMO, that so many can't get the
right answer to "2 + 2 = X".

Speaking of logos, I think I may remove virtually all (removable)
logos from my currently-under-construction bicycle project. That
should mystify the yupeloton:"What is that thing?? How much did it
cost??? What did Buycycling have to say???". :-))

Yep, mostly folks ride with their mitts locked on the hoods, arms
tense and elbows locked. Maybe they grab the tops when they need to
relieve the back pain.....

The logoing of bikes has been ridiculous for a long while. When I had
the Marin-Nexus yuro-pooter, it was fortunate that the move to black
everything hadn't been made yet, so I could at least Brillo the
"Marin" off of the bars, post, and stem. Alas, the Redline is not so
fortunate and lets the world know that every single component is
"Redline" dangit. Even the hubs.

Yeah, they should get those bars up to waist level, and use some
twine!

Lacquer thinner or acetone will remove many screened on logos.
Experiment on some non-prime parts or inconspicuous places first.

Hmm....this "raise the bars" thing can get out of hand. Easy to put
too much weight on the ol' buttski (on longer rides) and make it hard
to generate power.

My bars vary from ~saddle height (the mule) to 4" below (the 'fast'
bikes). Horses for courses.

Twine is for twits! ;-)

It's ridiculous. Between two bikes and a floor pump, I counted something
like 50 Bontrager logos at one point: handlebars, stem, seatpost, fork,
cranks, rims, tires... very often more than one logo on each component.

Even less aggressive solvents such as toluol and xylol are effective.

I prefer a long reach, bar level with the saddle these days, probably
as I've been running mostly single and fixed gear for going on seven
years now, and I'm out of the saddle a bunch. My solution to butt
pressure is to run a firm NOS 80s saddle and pedal hard enough so It
barely "interfaces". ;-)

Anchors aweigh!

Pffft! It's nothing compared to the Brooks Flyer I ditched when I sold
the Sprite! I figure it'll keep the front end nice and planted.

Check out the classy curves!:

I got a thing for Wald stuff. It's just so elemental. You can fix that
kit with a set of graduated rocks and a jar of peanut butter. I used
the folding wire baskets on my last full on utility bike. I'd ride up
to Devon in Chicago, throw fifty pounds of subcontinent goodness in
them and ride seven miles home. Never a problem.

The kid down the street with the *****in' creamsicle orange
electroforged Schwinn fixie with the trendy blue Deep-V wheel found
himself a set of Wald paperboy wire baskets and mounted them up. Rust
and all. It looks spectacular, like a tool belt with a Brooks Brothers
suit.

I like a long reach and use 80s (and earlier) style saddles (San Marco
Laser [talk about firm!] and Regal, Ideale 92), too. but I still
prefer the bars below saddle height for most purposes. Different
strokes.....
