View Full Version : Theo Bos documentary

There is an interesting documentary in Dutch on the Koga Miyata site
http://www.koga.com/kimera/
It's about their new track bike but in fact, mostly about Theo Bos.
They show him accepting an award in which he reads his acceptance
speech from his mobile phone. You can see a quick view of a somewhat
scary looking Leontien. My Dutch isn't too good, but it seems that Bos
was saying that there is also a 6.8kg UCI limit for track bikes.

Yes, that's what he said.

So, if I understand this correctly, the current hour record requires a
"standard" bicycle (to level equipment over the years), so at least
6.8kg according to current UCI rules. However, Merckx's 1972 bicycle
weighed 5.5kg, so the current equipment standard will be less advanced
than 35 years ago. Makes you wonder...

Yes, it is a pretty sad story, if I understand correctly, she was
encouraged into anorexia by her coach, kind of like Jeanson... I
remember her saying during the 2000 Olympics when someone finally
recognised her, something to the effect of: "I've changed haven't I?"
to say that she accepted her ordeal and how it marked her. She's still
the greatest, along with Longo.

BTW, the link does work from Canada, eh? But it starts from the start of

Further proof that Merckx was an overrated punk who had to set the hour
record on the top of Mt. Everest.

Boardman was man-enough to do it at sea level.

It's weirder than that. Sosenka's bicycle weight nearly 10 kg.

So maybe that makes the new bikes more advanced,

No, it will not. The point is that Merckx' bike was not very good. Its
designer, Ernesto Colnago, started from the self-evident notion that one
rides faster when pushing less weight along. Therefore he used super
light-weighted materials in which he had also drilled a many holes as
possible. But twelve years later Moser's bicyclebuilders did not have to
depend on common sense, but could make use of a laboratory where they could
carry out systematic scientific research. They found out that stability (and
drag) were far more important variables that weight. So the tenth and final
model they built and tested was four kilos heavier than Merckx' bike and had
completely different weight distribution.

IIRC, it was in Spain at a training camp when one of her coaches told her to
lose weight while climbing in Spain and that would give her the edge she
needed. According to her father, so got that so stuck in her head, she
couldn't get it out until it almost killed her, which Micheal came to the
rescue, you know the rest. I think I remember you saw the 1992 race in
Barcelona, and of course you can see her in the race, pencil thin arms, in
fact her whole body just a shell, and it didn't help her any either that
day, she got smoked along with the rest, except Longo who nearly caught Watt
in the end.

I remember her from Stuttgart 91, when she powered away from the
field. In those days, I recall that she wanted to be involved in
fashion after after she finished her cycling career. Otherwise, I
wonder whether she was also uninvited by the organizing committee
(they didn't want Bugno, the men's 91 champion).

Stuttgart was before the madness started. She looked great in that race, in
fact much like she looked after Michael took over. She was so obsessed with
racing and winning at the time that she used to kick her parents out the
house when cycling came on TV. Pretty bizarre, her Dad said the family went
through hell during that period. In fact I think that is what originally
drove Michael away, was her obsession with every detail of cycling, no time
for boyfriends. She was totally awesome at Stuttgart! Leontien was in my
opinion, maybe the greatest overall women rider in cycling ever. Longo did
more, but Leontien did it better. When she focused on either track, stage
racing or the Classics/Worlds/Olympics, she was the best. She wasn't always
a great stage racer, but she went toe to toe with Longo in the women's TDF,
and proved she can beat anyone in any discipline, if she sets her mind to
it. What I do think Leontien was good at was to be very specific, and only
train for what she wanted to win. She didn't waste time on races all year
long that were not specific to her goals. She methodically went after every
discipline in cycling, and in just 10 years, won every major aspect of
cycling, but I have to credit Michael too, he did a great job keeping her
focused. And remember some of those ten years she didn't race, during her
anorexia years. So really she did it all in less then ten years including
the hour record!

She also made more money then any women cyclist in history, considering all
the extra contracts, proxy, modeling and such, TV endorsements. She knew how
to use her sex to her advantage, using lipstick and fingernail polish. She
turned down a spread in Penthouse for a tidy sum, and how often are pro
women in cycling asked to appear in men's magazines? Almost never. She was
the only pro cycling women who really profited well from her cycling career,
like Super Mario, she knew how to play the PR game in the limelight.

I agree that she was more talented than Longo, though, in the end,
Longo seemed to be tougher mentally, able to take whatever everyone
dished out (including her own federation) over the years. From what I
remember, she did have a Dutch Penthouse article, though it didn't
show anything.

By the way, from that interview with her, I noted that she pronounced
the word "Tour" as if it were an English word, and after that, a lot
of her "r"'s were English-like, though not for the other people. Is
that a Dutch accent variation?

Yes, it is, although I never realised it could sound English. Using the
French "r" in Dutch is considered to be extremely mannered.

Well, I'm practicing my Dutch (which is non-existent) by watching the
video over again. Am I correct, did Leontien say she weighed 43kg??
