I don't know why people are so afraid of that. I suspect most car-
bicyclist problems do not occur from behind, odd as it might sound....

It's a fun ride; the key is to catch the traffic lights just so (doing
it on the weekends helps, too, particularly early morning time) and
jet downhill and use that momentum to keep pedaling. So do not
attempt unless you will ride fast, at like ~20 mph. Otherwise, what's
the point? You'll just be a speed bump for cars. =)
Unfortunately, there's a big ol' hill right outside the entrance...but
if you'd gone through the street above ("UN Way" or something), you
could jet down the small decline right before that hill (being sure,
once again, to catch the lights just so) and go up a good 85% of it
for "free"....

Wow, that's definitely one for the grand-kids!
I figured that getting hit from behind can't be as common as getting
hit from the side because drivers usually look ahead! The few times
I've gotten hit -- tapped, really -- was from the side, like drivers
trying to cut me off and such.
It's amazing we have such different experiences...I guess New York
really does have fourteen million different stories!

Well, thankfully it's never happened to me, not one single time in
over two decades of riding in NYC and surrounding environs in all
manner of weather, all times of day and night, all sorts of traffic
conditions, all seasons of the year (including in snow!)...I realize
that it's possible, but I just didn't think it was so probable.
Getting hit from behind is the Number One newbie fear, and I always
alleviated it in them by saying how it's never happened to me, for all
the side-swipes (taps).
I wonder what the statistics are...I'd bet that "rear-enders" are
rather less likely....

Well, FWIW, I claim the to be the voice of someone who has been doing this
for a really long time. My experience with threaded conversations goes back
to the days of BBS's and modems. When I started on my first chat BBS the
best modem you could buy was 1200 baud. I actually go back to 110/300 baud
and acoustic couplers but I didn't use those for threaded conversations. As
a though experiment, however, top-posting would have been far superior on a
KSR-33.
Although the conversations were threaded, most regular readers already knew
what the previous messages were. Anyone who wanted to join the thread could
either start at the beginning or jump right in.
The rules that made sense back then (and still do to my way of thinking) is
that you would top post if your reply was a response to the entire message
that preceded it. OTOH, you would insert your text into the message if you
were responding point by point.
This message could just have easily been top-posted with no lack of clarity.
You could still follow the thread by reading what is below it or by reading
the previous message.
I would say that to top post a point by point rebuttal is not such a great
idea but otherwise, it works as well as bottom posting. My point has always
been that it isn't an all or nothing thing. Top posting isn't always evil
and bottom posting isn't always better.

If you are riding in the lanes with motor vehicles in NYC it is just a
matter of time until you are hit. Ride in the street yes, but stay out of
the way of motor vehicles. In other words, get as far to the right as you
can, even if it means you are right next to the curb. Elementary, my dear
Watson!
On the other hand, if you are Bush hater like all the rest of the loony
left, then the sooner you are hit, the better. It will mean one less idiot

Have you tried riding a bike like this, or is this just some
theory that you cooked up from behind the windshield?
The method you describe will result in a large number of near
sideswipes (or worse). If there's not enough room in a given
lane for a car to safely pass, the cyclist is much safer taking
the lane; drivers can see you better and are more likely to pass
in the adjacent lane when it's safe to do so.

Well that is what I would have thought as well, however, I got hit doing
exactly what Steven says to do. Since I was on a trike and the driver behind
me was speeding up (we had just come through a green light), I was hurt
badly enough to basically put and end to my cycling.
If you don't live somewhere that has accomodated cyclists in a significant
way (such as Tucson or Seattle or Copenhagen) then I would stay off the
roads completely. I know that "giving up" like this is not a popular opinion
but the cars don't respect us at all.

Yes, that is the theory all right among the cognoscenti cyclists who think
they know everything. But it is false.
If you are in danger of being sideswiped, then get off your bike and walk it
on the sidewalk. The traffic in a major metro like NYC is ferocious and only
an idiot would want to mix in with it. Frankly, I would only ride a bike
there on a bike path - even in Brooklyn!

The only unpleasant part of my commute is the two miles from the 59th
Street Bridge down 2nd Avenue. Then I pick up the east side
bike/pedestrian path for the rest of the trip downtown.
Even 2nd Avenue is ok though for the most part. Folks in NYC are good
drivers. Aggressive maybe, but pretty aware of the road and people and
bikes.

Well since you asked,
I have decided not to have back surgery for pain. I've talked to many people
that have had it and nobody has had just one. I don't want to start down a
road of surgery after surgery. All the people I've talked to (about 4) say
the same thing. The surgery works for a while and then the pain returns.
But I thought that I had to do something so last month I had a gastric
bypass. I expect that over the next year or so I'll take off the 100 or so
extra pounds that I'm carrying (I'm down over 20 already). My pain doc says
that every pound
I take off is like taking 3 off my back.
It is unclear if I will be able to cycle again and enjoy it. There are some
physical problems on my right side that make cycling unpleasent after a
while. When I think about trying to cycle again I'm going to need to find a
pedal system that lets me press with my heel instead of my toe. That will
allow me to avoid the unpleasent stuff.
So the future is still a bit unclear. The weight loss could have a major
effect on a lot of things and I've only just begun that.

Even though you can't cycle much anymore, that is no reason to desert ARBR.

Jeff, that is what I have heard too from many others who have had back pain.
You just have to learn to live with it and after awhile it seems to become
less and less. Back pain is why I had to give up riding upright bicycles.
Recumbents pretty much solved the back pain (and shoulder and neck pain)
problem for me, but I did not have a major trauma like you.
When I was at the Seattle VA some years ago for my prostate cancer treatment
(external and seed implant radiation) they were flying young guys down from
Alaska, all of whom had terrible back pain. They all wanted operations, but
the docs would not operate on them no matter what. It was all about getting
those midriff muscles in shape.

Once you lose some of that weight, it will make a big difference. Everyone I
know that is overweight have lots of joint pain due to osteoarthritis (wear
and tear) and are getting knee and hip replacements.

Cycling is not the be-all and end-all of life. We are actually designed for
walking, not cycling. Try to get out and walk everyday for an hour or so, if
you can do that safely there in White Plains. That is what I do here in the
winter and it works for me. I carry along my MP3 player and listen to music
as I amble about Worthington. We all of us need to move more. It is really
all this sitting around that sends us to an early grave.

The loss of cycling, while not everything, is huge. It has been a source of
pleasure for most of my adult life and I won't concede it easily. While I
have never been a big fan of walking, my residual injuries make it more
unpleasant then ever. Because of the foot drop on my right side and the
difficulty in picking up that foot, walking has become a real chore. I
frequently stumble and trip on my own foot.
I still have martial arts and this winter, I should get out and see how
cross country skiing is. On easy trails it is like winter hiking. You don't
have to pick up your leg all the way. It might be something I can still do
although given how short the season is (they don't make snow for it), it
can't really replace cycling.

Here is NYC XYZ again making a perfect fool of himself. He seems not to
realize that it is only the thin blue line (cops) that keeps us safe from
criminal predators. Many of them are now in prison where they belong and NYC
may well end up there himself if his present attitude should continue. But
he is young and has much to learn about human nature. In prison, he would
learn all about human nature in spades from his fellow inmates in a matter
of minutes.

Hey, I live in NYC, you don't have to remind me twice that cops keep
our spics and niggers in line (somewhat!)...just yesterday in the
subway station at Bay Ridge -- a white and Asian neighborhood -- four
nigglets were making a racket. A lot of banging of metal and shouting
and commotion, such that cops from the OTHER SIDE of the subway
station came over to investigate! Now if you know the NYC subways,
you know that that's a heck of a long way in terms of distance, so you
can imagine how much these little corn-row-headed niggers were jumping
up and down trashing the place like gorillas in the jungle!
Turns out all that crashing about was 'cause the four of them were
trying to get in on one STUDENT MetroCard...at 8:10 at night! Turns
out they weren't even students -- ! So the cop was like, come follow
me....
And people wonder why I'm "racist." How many times to you have to go
through this **** every week when you just conclude, hey, spics and
niggers are garbage?? They make the Italians and Irish look like
angels -- which is saying a lot, if you know the history of NYC!
Of course, use a thief to catch a thief...which is why the Irish-
Italian NYPD of old is now becoming more and more black and hispanic
-- LOL!!

I have been through these wars over the correct manner of posting messages

won't, other than to say that you are wrong. Please read up on Netiquette

Jeff, if you can't get out and walk easily I will admit you are in trouble.
I think that is the one thing we humans have to do in order to maintain our
health. Ever notice how those who are confined to a bed or a wheelchair
never live very long?
I think I would work on getting back the ability to walk above all else.
Surely there is a physical therapy or a prosthetic device available that

I can walk. It is slow and unpleasant. I've already been through 18 months
of PT which brought me as far as I've come today. There is a prosthetic
device. I have one. It is a case of the cure being worse than the disease.
The device is a brace and the improvement is minimal. The brace picks up the
front of my foot but it doesn't make the nerves fire that won't fire. The
brace is only the slightest of improvements.
I can and do exercise using machines and I am able to get an adequate
workout. I wasn't talking about physical fitness, which I am able to
maintain but rather about recreation. Cycling has never been about fitness
for me. Fitness was always a side effect. Cycling is something I have loved
to do since the first time I got on a bike as an adult. Before getting
married I used to bike just about everywhere and I got out every weekend. I
met my wife on a bike and she loves it as much as I do. Before children the
two of us biked often. Even after our son was born, we would plan bike trips
when we could. For example:
http://groups.msn.com/grippesphotos/railtrail2005.msnw
This is a safe link ed. It is to my photos on MSN.
So the loss of cycling would be huge but I don't concede the fight by a long
shot.

You know, people spend way too much time on usenet playing the
personae dramatis guessing game...fact is, every opinion has got its
"constituency," regardless of who actually states it in public ("I am
Spartacus!")....
Ed thinks he's very clever doing the "aha gotcha" routine when I've

the pedant with nothing of substance to say and therefore retreats to
pointing out typos and other such minutiae, Ed thinks conversations

Yes, I always cycled for enjoyment too, not fitness. But still it was a nice
side benefit to get. Now, however, I must admit I cycle more for fitness
than I do enjoyment. Trust me on this, cycling enjoyment does not continue
forever.
Just being able to walk is not enough. You have to be able to walk
continuously for a period of time (minimum 1 hour). It is something you do
for fitness, not enjoyment (unless you are hiking in the mountains of
course). However, if you can listen to music while you are doing it, it is
not so bad.

It is OK to be a racist. Everyone is - positively no exceptions! However, it
is best not to let it all hang out too outrageously since we all have to
live together in the same society - more or less. Furthermore, there are a
lot of thin-skinned liberals loose in the country who like to pretend they
are holier than thou and will take to calling you a bigot.
Liberals are the biggest racists of all except for the blacks. They are
still a minority living in a predominantly white society, so of course they
think about race all the time, Let's face it, if we were living in the
Congo, we would be thinking about race all the time too because then we
would be a minority in a predominantly black society.
Well, birds of a feather flock together and so should we. Yea, we should all
stay with our own kind and consign cultural diversity to the dust bin of
history. It is just another one of those progressive liberal ideas that was
hatched in a loony bin and never worked in the real world beyond
kindergarten.

Nah, I think race should be dealt with instead of swept under the
rug. Besides, blacks and hispanics are about the absolute most racist
folks around in NYC -- they see everything in terms of race, which is
the very definition of a racist!
> Furthermore, there are a

These same liberals talk out of both sides of their collective ass
(it's a big one, all right, but not shapely at all): they will *****
about half of all AIDS cases being niggers when asking for government
hand-outs, but ***** about "racism" when the doctor at the CDC
recently discovered that it was a Haitian nigger who brought AIDS into
America!

They're no minority in NYC, but their victim mentality excuses all
kinds of the most outrageous racism on their part.

I ain't against the obvious, which is that there are "races," so-
called, about...what I'm against is the phony liberal bull**** foisted
on me -- that's why I'm a "prisoner AT war" -- that blacks and

"Cultural diversity" will happen on its own because human beings are
social creatures and will naturally interact...the very fact that
political correctness, however, must be enforced by society's arbiters
of current tastes and fashion just goes to show what crap it is --
because only the unnatural needs enforcement; only criminals need
legal codes (honest men already know the difference).
The history of mankind is one of "cultural diversity," in point of
fact...why, the English language itself is a hodge-podge of
influences, which is why it's harder to learn than Chinese! But this
bull**** where spiggers complain that no one cares about crime in da
hood as long it stays there, then complain about "racial profiling"
when cops are sent in to control crime in da hood...it's the most
disgusting kind of hypocrisy.
It's the kind which insults the intelligence of the observer: the
emperor has no clothes, but we must all pretend nothing is amiss.

I think it was brought to this nation by American homos cruising abroad. It
was really funny how the media wanted to portray it as a disease that could
happen to anyone when all the early victims seemed to be either homos or
needle users. But I knew it would spread to ever larger circles because
humans are basically sexual swine. Others are not capable of the Holiness of

believe in reparations for slavery of all things - as if I or my ancestors
had anything to do with it.

It is only fairly recently that it has even been possible to have any
cultural diversity. But is it a good thing? That is the question! The
Balkans are the best example I can point to that cultural diversity does not
always work out. We Americans can hardly tell the difference between the
various ethnicities involved, but they sure can! One thing is for certain,
Americanization has come to a complete halt.

America has always been about homogenization, not diversity. This has now
changed, much for the worse I fear. The recent immigrants are not becoming
Americans anymore than recent Muslim immigrants to France are becoming
French.

But that is exactly what you do. No one in his right mind would blather on

Toilet innuendo instead of sexual innuendo. At least that is different. I
wonder if Jim McNamara knows about toilet innuendo? It could be a whole new

Actually, that's been how it was portrayed at first -- "the Four H's:
homos, heroin addicts, hemophiliacs, and Haitians" -- which apparently
helped cause its spread because no one thought about all those
bisexual faggots giving it to typically dumb broads ("now that I think

You don't understand: I say this stuff in real life, too, if the
occasion warrants it! Black people are really surprised to see a
Chinese guy -- a big physically fit one, too -- say things that the
whiteboys are too ascared of saying out loud. I actually feel bad for
embarrassing them, in effect doing whitey's dirty work for him without
meaning to, but the truth is the truth: niggers are just white trash
in blackface, and there's a lot of black racism around. (Just listen
to most any episode of NPR's new black shows and you get the feeling
that these people are the new Jews or something: God's own elect!)
Frankly, it'd be a much better world if blacks, whites, Jews, Muslims,
and Christians all killed each other!

Actually, that's precisely the worst example of cultural diversity

There's no such thing as "Americanization," or else the Irish would
STFU up "the North" already instead of supporting terrorists! But
what has come to an end is the idea that there should be a more
cohesive common culture, as opposed to this "multiculturalism" which
sounds nice on paper but as applied "on the ground" means that
spiggers can blast their musicK-noise because it's their barbaric
culture....
> America has always been about homogenization, not diversity.
You should try reading a history book, you know? America has always
been about doing it your own way. From the French to the Dutch to the
Mormons to the Mennonites...what's different today is that those
previous cultures recognized not only their right to their own way but
a RESPONSIBILITY towards not impeding others' "own ways"...with spics
and niggers, it's only about "what's mines" and taking as much as they
can out of the system.

Another black male was shot the other day in NYC, and of course the
Jew-controlled media here is going gaga over "police brutality" and
"racism"...it's to the Jews' advantage to have all this racial
bull**** swarming around, since they can better go about their way
unnoticed in the background while the rest of us deal with Jewish
liberalism (they love blacks and hispanics so much but their kids go

How about Your Celestial Gayness? We all know Catholic priests are
faggots. Who else wears "robes" and all that jewelry? Gayest **** I
ever saw, the Catholic Church. Do you remember that all them top
Nazis were Catholics, and had even been choir boys? Come to think of

Sexually transmitted disease, including AIDS, is what is wrong with sex. All
religion tries to do is save us from our own worst selves. Saint Edward the
Great, for instance, can never get a sexually transmitted disease. He is
just too Pure and Holy for such nonsense. You, however, with your wandering

I can clearly see that you are not long for this world. Any pip-squeak with
a pop gun can easily put an end to your great big life. I strongly suggest
you not say what is on your mind. Yes, racism is a fact of life, but it is
best never to bring it up in public. Talk the way you do with only those you
know VERY well. Never, and I do mean never, bring these matters up with
strangers. Do you not know that 1 out of 10 people walking around in this
world at any one time are crazy?

Mr. Horowitz has finally achieved wisdom in his wayward life. He is now one
of the wisest of the wise. He is never wrong about anything anymore. He
reminds me of ex-communists who finally see the light and become great
champions of democracy. Horowitz knows more about what education is for than

Lenny Bruce was one of the most despicable night club comics who ever lived.

Well, technically speaking, it was originally a disease of chimpanzees
in Africa...now either some nigger ****ed an ape -- 'cause let's face
it, niggers **** all the time, and they **** anything -- or, more
politely, we can concede that perhaps it spread from the open-air

But I understand what you mean about AIDS being a homosexual disease.
It's also now a black disease -- except when it's not.

I don't ply people with my opinions unasked, but if I'm already in a
conversation and the topic has come up of its own, I do not hesitate
to express my views.

Oh yeah, speaking of Nazis -- a lot of them were former Communists who
switched over quite easily. They weren't "racist," necessarily, but
found the shoot-first-ask-no-questions-ever approach warmly familiar.

Sure they have their issues over there, but they've had them for
centuries -- same as the Irish had theirs amongst themselves! Ethinc/
racial animosity is so over-rated: if it's not that, it would be
something else.

If that were true, it would have died out long ago. The masses need it and
it probably would not hurt us either. Atheism has a very bad record in the
20th century (Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot - mass murderers all).

The Nazis were National Socialists, no different than Communists when it
came to controlling their subjects.

You have to closely study the history of the ethnic groups to understand
what all the fuss is about. The Irish had issues with the Scotch-Irish,
settlers from Scotland who invaded Northern Ireland. They were interlopers
sponsored by the English and had no right to be there. Furthermore, they
were Protestant, not Roman Catholic. No wonder the Irish hated them.

I am a Nativist all right because that is what makes the most sense if you
want to lead a peaceful life. Your Brave New World has never happened and it
never will. You for instance might be better off in the land of your
ancestors (China), where you would not have to put up with New York City
Blacks.

But atheism does not pretend to be a cure-all the way religion thinks
it is. That tyrants have been atheists is as incidental as that they
may have been vegetarians, womanizers, or short little fries. That
many popes, caliphs, and rabbis have been blood-thirsty parasites,
however, goes to the very heart of their claim as representatives of
God on earth.

Well, that's just how it is, dangerous or not. You forget that I do

LOL! You mean like the Hillary who made a "big switch" from "many
years ago" and now has her own website where you can also see for
yourself?

IOW, the usual...like the old neighbors' complaint from "The Man Who
Would Be King" -- oh those people, they steal our cattle, they rape
our daughters, they piss downstream....

That's like saying the Great Ed would have been better off as Pope in
Vatican City -- neither here nor there, as the Irish like to say in
that funny sing-song glide of theirs while collecting shamrocks....
You're a Nativist and nuts, and just like those Know-Nothing
Nativists of old, you will be nothing more than a curious footnote in
a worm-ridden volume on a dusty shelf behind a rusty door under a
decrepit depository on the far side of town in the middle of
nowhere....

The atheists (tyrannical dictators like Hitler and Stalin) ) attempt to
create a new religion out of political ideology. Just another proof of how
the masses need religion. Better a traditional religion than a 'political
ideology' religion.
