My heart sunk when I read about this kid. We ride out in Kenly all the time, ya know? And some heartless jerk plows into this kid and doesn't even stop? He's still in the hospital in critical condition. Thank God they found the creep. I hope she fries.

NOT excusing the actions - especially the hit-and-run aspects - of the driver in ANY way, but

the WRAL story notes that the young man riding the bicycle was riding AGAINST the traffic (northbound / southbound).

Riding AGAINST the traffic is not only against the law, it is DANGEROUS.

I agree with skiffrun when you ride against traffic you take your life into your own hands. Cars have far less time to react to you due to increacedapproach speed

bike 10mph car 40mph= gap between car and bike closes at 50mph wrong way

bike 10mph car40mph= gap between car and bike closes at 30mph right way

that said I hope justice comes for the hit and run aspect

link to a good article about wrong way cycling

An 18-year-old probably has not learned that riding against traffic is dangerous yet.

After reading the WRAL story, I hope this woman will be in jail for a very long time. Her actions at the time, and after the accident are appalling.

if someone, anyone, has not learned / been taught how to drive, then they shouldn't be driving.

I refer to DRIVING a bicycle.

----------------------------------------------------
btw, same logic:

- an 18 year old probably hasn't learned that pointing a loaded pistol at his own head is dangerous.

- an 18 year old probably hasn't learned that smashing his fist into the head of a small child is dangerous.

- etc.

Esther, we haven't met, but from your precious posts here, your stuff on NCBC, etc., you are better than thinking that someone eligilble to vote hasn't learned basic things.

P.S. Just to clarify, as implied in first post I made on this thread, I agree auto driver actions were disgusting!

P.S. Just to clarify, as implied in first post I made on this thread, I agree auto driver actions were disgusting!

I would typically be less forgiving of an 18 year old adult doing something really stupid, but I think the behavior of this driver has swayed me toward being more tolerant of the behavior of this 18 year old. The recent research on the adolescent brain that says they really do not comprehend the risks of death, severe injury, and permanent disability also sways me. I think I'm lucky that the speed limit for cars was 55 when I was aged 16-21, because my judgement and experience in driving took a while to learn faster speed. Plus, my older sister would have had more chances for accidents if she hadn't been afraid of speeding tickets, and it was scary enough when she was driving.

I would like to think that anyone older than 15 has learned to ride a bike with traffic, and jog/walk against traffic, but there is a lot of evidence to the contrary.

If I hadn't acquired a mild but permanent disability at age 8, I might have been one of those stupid teens with even worse judgement than I had. I had the opportunity to genuinely understand that an accident that wasn't my fault could seriously hurt me, and leave permanent repercussions. That lesson did not really transmit to my siblings.

I know that reality is harsh and unfair. I sometimes have sympathy for people who have been harmed asymmetrically in something where they had a somewhat smaller proportion of fault, or they made a relatively small mistake. Riding on the wrong side of the road is a smaller offense than allegedly leaving the scene of an accident and allegedly making arrangements to get the car crushed.

Trial date has been set for May 13 for the driver in this hit-and-run case.

Every statement from the driver, her family, or her lawyer adds to my anger at that woman.

If DA's would pay attention in drivers ed at 14 instead of drifting off they would know better! this is coming from a 20 yr old north johnston graduate
****tard shouldve paid attention in drivers ed... that said she shouldnt have hit and ran like the puss she is! uuuuraah!!!
