I noticed my Norelco wasn't shaving so well lately, so stopped by a
(rare in L.A.) Walmart last night because I heard they stocked
replacements heads. Sure enough, they had the whole range. So, I
could pay $29.46 for a new set of heads, or $29.97 for a new razor.
And the new
one is washable at the faucet and rechargable. (I've always used
corded on the theory that the rechargables are just a way to make you
buy a new razor when the battery goes, but so long as it last longer
than the heads, I'm all set.) Painful, but I didn't see a better
price for the heads on the Web. Looks like we live in a scale-ly
age...

Shoot, that kind of money buys me (literally) a decade's worth of Bic
shavers, which are pretty laterally stiff and vertically compliant!

To go further OT: what shaver had the advert with the credit card
against the stubble?

Should be carefuly in using that brand of economy logic. More and more often I
notice that a complete assy. is priced less than (or the same as, occasionally)
a replacement part but the *quality* of that complete assy. is also signicantly
less. Bushings in place of bearings (*very* common); molded polystyrene in
place of metal; etc. Of the five 5.25" diskette drives that I own, three died
long ago. The dead ones are flimsy sheet metal and thin, brittle plastic; the
two that still work (!) are fine examples of design, made for the long haul,
burly castings and quality motors.

A couple years ago I spent $130 to replace a part of my early-90's HP LaserJet
printer. A friend smirked at that and proudly stated that his new HP laser
printer had cost about the same as the part I had just bought. That's OK. I
know that my LaserJet III will still be pumping out pages when his printer - as
well as whatever replaces it - are toast.

I don't think it was a razor commercial - it was Edge shaving Gel...

Your mind is admirably clogged with plop culture!

You know what I miss is coconut scented shave cream. Not the fancy
kind, but the Barbasol version that smelled like pie.

Those SOB's do run forever, don't they? Replace the toner
<infinitely>, then continue printing.

HP is now doing increasingly boneheaded things with every year that
goes by. Their latest printers now require that the OS (e.g. XP)
download a substantial part of the printer's internal software on the
fly. Makes traditional hardware/network print servers useless with
some of their latest printers.
