I'm a newbie... advice welcome.

I have a 99 cannondale r800 I bought used, and after a few months, the inner chain ring makes a clicking noise, and on the outer, the chain starts to come off about once every 10 revs, then slips back on. The deraileur isn't touching it (watched it on the trainer). What gives? To be honest, I won't be upset if it's the chain rings - want a triple anyway.

" I have a 99 Cannondale R800 I bought used "

The drive (chainrings, chain and cassette) might be worn out, a bike mechanic will be able to measure them to see.

" Want a triple anyway "

Compact chainrings 50/34, triple chainrings 52/42/30.

A compact has fewer parts that need to be replaced, where as with a triple the front shifter, derailleur and rear derailleur will need to be replaced.

Compact cranks have fewer gear inch overlaps and will shift smother than a triple. Changing the rear cassette can give climbing as well as flat land options.

To go to a triple youre going to have to revise the whole drive train and that would probably be counterproductive from a cost standpoint.

Youd need a FD, RD, chain, crankset and shifters.
