It's a track race - what's the normal field size for that?

This race was yesterday. I saw the first ~100 laps and the final 50-60 laps.
Pretty exciting race, ...well, as exciting as a 400-lap track race can be. I
haven't seen too many scratch races (or points races for that matter) on the
track, and haven't really appreciated the subtleties. The drama of watching
a guy try to take a lap, and just f'ing suffer to try to attach to the back,
is really cool. I also enjoyed watching the on-the-fly alliances form and
then break, depending on the circumstances. I really hope the US can support
a winter track season; it's the only way that side of the sport can hope to
generate a bigger fan base since the rest of the year is so road focused.
Plus it's the only way to get the good endurance riders to do track.
I took a few pics and posted them on my blog:

I hope the officials can keep which-riders-are-on-which-lap straight.

Given the $10k prize list, they should have no problem getting more people
to sign up than there is capacity on the track. I'd imagine the field limit
is about 30 riders. I also suspect that the US riders currently at the World
Cup in Sydney will show up unless they are going to stay down under for
training and the Christmas carnivals.
Although a $10k track race in the US in December seems odd, it brings the US
more in line with the UCI trying to make track racing more of a winter
sport.

Hey Carl, you could probably blow most of them away and walk off with
some money.

I think that the fact they were running it as sort of a bastard-ized
miss-n-out would put some people off.

I spend a fair amount of my winter training during my base miles on a
fixed gear, and without fail any time I tell someone how many miles I
did on a fixie on a given day, even trackies think its crazy. I've
never spoken to another trackie who's done the kind of mileage I
sometimes do (115 miles is my max, so far, but I routinely do 50-60
mile fixed gear rides). I can't imagine, though, trying to do 60
miles on a fixed gear AT RACE PACE. Yikes! Must be why only 5
finished.
Thanks for pointing out that the subtleties of track racing are just
that, subtleties. Most folks don't get it, but there is a lot going
on, which makes the racing fun when you're fit and miserable when
you're not.

Here are some of the specific rules for the race:
.. Anyone 2 laps down will be deemed out of contention and will be pulled
.. Every 50 laps, the last five riders will be pulled
.. If riders have been pulled previously or have crashed out, only the number
of riders will be pulled to make the peloton the correct number of riders as
proportionate i.e., at 350 laps, there should be 45 riders remaining, at 300
laps, 40 riders, etc.
Here's one recommendation most riders probably ignored:
.. Recommended gear: 52x17, 49x16 (82.5").

Because they knew better or they thought they knew better? And they
went bigger, right?

Without having spoken with the riders in the event, I'd say they knew
better. For one thing, this was a one time event. Unlike the routine of a
six day with multiple races culminating in an hour chase at the end of each
evening, it isn't commonplace to see races longer than 30k in the States.
For another, a 250 track isn't particularly small.
I'm quite confident that they did.
