I'm looking for a plain vanilla heart rate monitor that does nothing
buy give the heart rate. I don't want any other techno-bloat -- no
clock, lap timers or anything, just the heart rate.

Any suggestions?

Hey DC

I like my Tanita 6102. A pocket size, strapless model that measures
your pulse at the finger tip. VERY convenient for checking your resting
heart upon waking.

Simple, accurate and inexpensive, about $25.

Sigma PC3:

It has a timer too, but other than that just a nice big HR display
with no bloat. Just one button. Good reception from the chest belt.

I like my CardioSport GO. It's not the cheapest on the market, but
you can change the batteries yourself. I've had others that required
you to send the chest strap and watch back to the manufacturer when
the batteries wore out (about every 1-2 years).

Seconded. If you decide it's worthwhile, you can spend more money to
get a fancier HRM; if not, you haven't lost too much.
