View Full Version : most loved / hated jerseys & team kits

I know many here are racers or former racers. Racers have very little
choice what to wear when racing and maybe a little discretion when
training.

However, I'm wondering what jerseys and kits out there did you like
riding/competing in, or which jerseys and kits did you cringe every
time you put it on?

And when not obliged to wear the sponsors kit, what jerseys do you
like wearing? Subtle or loud, Technical polyesters or wool? Generic or
logos?

.... and for what reasons?

Full disclosure here: I have my own small cycling apparel company and
always enjoy learning more about people's tastes, what they select
and
why.

Thanks,
-Rick

The weirdest jersey I ever raced in was at the San Jose track in 1984.
In the Madison there were pre-decided trade teams and each team was
given a jersey. I think I got a Morgan Hill one, I had just moved to
the Bay Area and had never even heard of the place before.

I rode for a Denver team named "Maglia Rosa" in 1984. We had pink
jerseys with "Maglia Rosa" in script down the side panel. The main
sponsor was a bike shop named "I like bikes" and so this was printed
prominently on the jersey and legs, so large that it violated USCF
rules and for a while I had to wear tape on my short legs. I liked the
jersey a lot, but it wasn't the sort of thing you'd want to wear every
day and it wasn't a big hit with the general public. I once heard a
couple discussing my jersey while I was stopped at a light. She liked
it, he hated it.

one year we had royal blue shorts that, no matter how much you shook
it, would always show a wet spot upon exiting the porta-potty before
the race.

Carl should post a picture of his NCL kit. It would be interesting to
know if it was is most loved or most hated getup.

People competing in blazers make me cringe.

A virtual wool LIVEDRUNK(tm) jersey.

Here's one I liked a lot from 1989. It had sort of an orange spiderman
theme. You can't tell from the picture, but the bike frame had
different colored neon brush strokes in various places and the jersey
had matching brush strokes on the back. Very artsy.

Jesus, Dan, I think you win.

I thought the earlier years of my team jersey were bad as I have worn,
hanging on the wall here:

http://mbrc.dyndns.org:64314/2005photos/bikeshow2_sm.jpg

As you can see, they got better in the later years. The last jersey I
raced in is the Gears jersey hanging on the wall, not the one hanging on
the 'models'. The type of fabric makes more of a difference than the
design on whether I liked to wear it. Most of the jerseys were standard
Louis Garneau polyester, but the third orange/blue design in that series
used a different weave and weight of polyester which sucked to ride in,
I thought.

Now, if I don't ride 'vintage' team kit I like to keep it vaguely
communist with the Republic of Anaerobia, but this fabric is not so
great either, in my opinion.

http://www.anaerobia.com

But no matter how comfortable it is, I would never wear Dan's jersey.

I'd like a "Defend Brooklyn" jersey, if the place
hadn't already been overrun by hipsters.

Failing that, a "Save the G" (www.savetheg.org) kit.
The G is so borough it isn't even hip.

All things being equal I think the (ex) TMobile squadra has the best
looking kit. Gerolsteiner is um, well, I can understand the
relationship to water and all but ... not my favorite. You gotta think
how much better a rider like Rebellin must be if he can win races
while in the baby blue fade kit of the german water company. Just my

I think Francaise has a nice outfit. The white with the clover has an
elegant appearance. The baby blue isn't that bad imho. Lampre is just
a little brighter I think.
A few weeks ago I saw a rider with a jersey which had a giant orange
on it. Looked like it was sponsored by an orange juice company.
Haven't been able to find out more about it though :(

The T-Mobile kit looks like a Hustler centerfold of a black woman.

Rebellin is a doper too. Nobody drops DiLuca in Italy that many times
unless you're on the Gold Plan with Ferarri. DiLuca should have just
paid the extra 20,000 Euros.

There has never been another jersey quite as elegant as the La Vie Claire
jersey from the mid-80's. It was taken from a Piet Mondrian painting.

Nothing wrong with the orange and blue designs, to my mind.

Too bad. I lurve their Poseur jersey.

> But no matter how comfortable it is, I would never wear Dan's jersey.

I promised some ugly jersey:

Ayako Toyooka, 2007 Japanese national Cyclocross Champion:
http://www.cyclingnews.com/cross.php?id=/photos/2007/dec07/japan07/a003
http://www.cyclingnews.com/cross.php?id=/photos/2007/dec07/japan07/a001

Leopard print, fades, mauve...her own name, spelled out across the
middle of the shirt, is pretty much the most tasteful design element.

BTW, you can just make out the Pearl Izumi logo on one leg.

This podium shot has her jersey covered up by what is presumably the CX
championship jersey, but you get a nice photo of a set of full-length
tights that she did not wear for the race, in the same leopard fade.

This is of course because UCI rules mandate wearing team kit on the
podium, but because it was cold, or possibly there was a delay between
the race end and the ceremony, she would have popped into some comfy
tights in the interval.

Now that's a nice jersey:

This last one's the one. I don't know how the thumbnail got linked. I

Marressi shoes. Wish they were still around.

Yeah, I know the name is still around. So are Motobecane, Mercier, Schwinn,
Raleigh, etc.

If I ever looked over in a race and saw preying mantis eyes with that
Puerto Rican cooler lid, I'd crush his trachea with a Zanoli hit like
something out of a bad Davis Phinney dream. There's your ****in' asthma
TUE right there.

Silly: the cable thing is why you're supposed to use Campy shifters. Or
SRAM, I guess.

I suppose it's what you grow up with. To me that bike looks pretty
spindly, though my first race bike was a steel Pinarello that had pretty
much those proportions and a threaded stem.

Was less beautiful after I added a purple Trek OCLV fork,

I'm glad you like it. You'll be happy to learn that it was
immortalized in paint:

http://fischer-wade.net/Misc%20Bike%20Stuff/album/slides/davidson.html

Not my idea and the source of much family friction exactly twenty
years ago. To make a long story short, apparently it's absolutely
necessary to call and thank people for Christmas presents on UPS
Delivery Day and and not actually wait until Christmas day.

Yeah. I knew they were not right for me (shaped of the last) and
didn't try them, but those were clearly very well-thought out shoes.

I remember being really disappointed that I couldn't replace those
shoes. I went through the same thing more recently with Duegi. I
bought my last pair on a trip to Italy.

I do (Campy that is) ... and while I wouldn't trade the Record Ergo
for downtube shifters I still don't like the cable routing.

I had a Bolle bag, but lost it one day. ****in' pissed me off cause it
had one of those shoe compartments that no other bag I've purchased
since has...

Well Bret, sounds like you're on your way to being a pro. All you need
now is the extra 1% of rationalization logic to convince yourself that
taking 5 cc's of EPO a week is necessary to treat your blood disorder
(your definition of a blood disorder being the same as your definition
of asthma - that is, having a body that doesn't allow you to win a big
race).

Most of you people in here would have assimilated wonderfully into the
Manson Family. Charlie's coming up for parole again and I expect to see
a lot of you there.

The situation is quite the opposite. I don't like the idea of taking
medicine if I can avoid it. I don't even take vitamins or other
supplements. I've never raced on asthma medication because I dislike
the side effects and as a result, I have a reputation for throwing up
after hard efforts. The picture I linked to above is a Prologue TT. I
threw up within a minute of finishing. Field sprints were bad too.

From his jealousy, we can tell that Carl's put on a bit of a pot belly

That's all Ayako, baby.

Style details I didn't notice before: pink bike, pink shoes, two-tone
bar tape.

Also, here's the third-place rider resting post-race in a Japanese
National Team jacket:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/cross.php?id=/photos/2007/dec07/japan07/a006

Which we can now recognize, thanks to the photo of Tashiro above.

In Japan, they use locally-produced tires wrapped in shipping plastic as
a laurel wreath:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/cross.php?id=/photos/2007/dec07/japan07/a007

The champions jersey for cyclocross is boring:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/cross.php?id=/photos/2007/dec07/japan07/a018

But the paper decoration, whatever it is, is not.

The road championship jersey is way cooler:

Jusst to note, while the Japanese people are famous for believing all Japanese
