Well, I was chatting with a few friends on another forum and mentioned that I would like to have a beater bike. One of the guys said he had one that was too big for his wife and too small for him. He told me that he would give it to me - all I would have to do is get a few parts for it and get it built up.
He sent it to me, free of charge, and I got it last Wednesday. It's pretty scuffed up, got a bit of rust on the outside, but other than that, it's in decent shape. So, anyways, it came without crankset, cassette, deraileurs, bottom bracket, chain.
I've got a few parts from ebay and need to get a few more, get it cleaned up and built up.
Attached are a few photos....
I been wanting to do something like that. Very interesting Karen, thanks for sharing.

That is pretty sweet. I always dig vintage, stamped components.

well, i decided to get the frame powdercoated instead of trying to strip the paint/fix the rust stuff myself, as i just didn't seem to have the time. i got it back today...here's a pic i took inside, but i'll post others in my album once i can get it outside in the sunlight for better pics. btw, it's a really bright red!
gotta finish getting the rear wheel cleaned up, don't know if i can salvage the existing cassette, if not, will have to get a new one as well as some cables/housings, bar tape, brake pads, etc...hopefully i can get it built up fairly soon...

Nice job.. who did the powder coating and how long did it take them? I wanted to get my crankset powdercoated but couldnt get anyone to return any emails about doing it.

it was carolina powdercoaters or (powdercoating) off of cary parkway, just before you get to old apex rd. i took it by last thursday after work and it was done yesterday (and, they only worked .5 day friday).
all communication via email, with Tom, the owner (i can PM you the email addy). I'm really pleased with it, from what i can see looking at it in the house. $150 to blast it, paint the frame & fork. if i see you this weekend, i'll give you one of their cards.

Karen your new frame looks great. I have a close friend who owns a sandblasting and powder-coating biz. He's chomping at the bits to blast and powder-coat my bike frame. I just hate to loose the decals;a replacement set is about $75.00
I just completed rebuilding a vintage steel frame. It is a 1989 Nishiki Modulus, 64cm CrMo Kawamura frame. I used Ultegra 6500 components, Mavic Aksium wheelset and hubs, Michelin Pro 2 rubber, Technomic 120mm stem, 42cm drop bars, NOS Campy skewers, a Cateye Velo5 cyclocomputer, and a Brooks saddle.
I just finished the build last week with the addition of Ultegra 6620 pedals. After the buildup the bike weighs 21 lbs, not bad for vintage steel. The ride is smooth, quick and responsive. Lp

well, it's not going as well as i thought it would be...a lot to learn. the shifters i received with the partial group appear to be the clamp-on style, while i need the braze-on type. i think i may have found some adapters that will make them work on campy style bosses - if not, i'll just use something else until i can find some braze-on Arabesque dt shifters. not sure that i can use the shifters that came off of the bike due to some of the teeth breaking off part of the internal parts....
i'm off to the LBS at lunch to have them clean out the paint in the seat tube. supposedly, they will have some sort of tool that does this fairly easily/quickly. i'll also have them check out the bb area to make sure everything there is ready for the bb install. i should be able to get the crankset on this weekend:rolleyes:
also have to check the races on the headtube - someone mentioned that it looked like there was some sparring on them. might need new ones. does this mean i need a new headset as well??

ok, got the bosses filed down so i can now get the shifters on. i ordered another set (clamp-on) because they look really good and have the parts that i'm missing with what i have already. hopefully, i'll get busy this weekend and get the new shifters, bb, crankset, and maybe derailleurs on. i hope so! i want this to be done so i can ride it!!!

Hey K, I was hoping to get an update on your Lotus rebuild and saw your posts on the other bike forum. Red is definitely looking the right color. Go Pack! Anyway, I'm trying to push the miles up and do some more weekend rides with you guys.

Thanks.
I had to take the frame to Ed at Cycle Logic to get the bb shell re-threaded. I think it was messed up when I received it because I tried to (very, very carefully) see if the bb would go in before last week and had the same sort of trouble. No matter tho, who cross-threaded it. It is fixed now.
I will try to get the cranks & derailleurs on this week. How hard can that be?

Got a little more put on than expected this evening. Cranks, RD, FD, brakes, and just slapped the wheels on for the pictures. Didn't bother with putting the freewheel on tonight, just wanted to get something on it so that I feel like I'm making a little bit of progress. Will have to move the FD most likely, as I just "slapped" it on in a position that looked "close".
Here it is:

It is looking good. Getting the FD in the proper position is the trick. If it is the correct angle and distance above the large chainring, it will work well. If it is not, no amount of adjusting cable tension or limit screws is going to help. The RD is so much easier to get right than the FD.

Hey Karen,
We're getty antsy. How about some pictures of the finished bike.
BTW, Have you done the Burnsville Metric before. The profile looks like the last half is all up hill.

Those are good tires. I have a set around here somewhere. They ride great.

have you ridden burnsville before?
i've almost got the bike finished. maybe pics this weekend.
