View Full Version : Clamp on front derailleur for a smaller seat tube

Presently planning to move a triple groupset to a new frame I bought for
my wife. The problem is that the present triple FD is a clamp-on version
for 34mm seat tube and the new frame has 32mm tube. The possible
solutions are,
1) Find a collar insert of some sort to allow the FD to anchor to the
32mm tube.
2) Buy new FD.
Obviously I'd like to minimise the expenses and wastage of a perfectly
good FD. Anyone have any experience with solution one? Can it be done?
How can it be done well?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I'd check with a bike shop. Shimano MTB FDs all come with such a shim,
so there's a good chance they have a few lying around.
If they don't have one handy, the one that comes with Deore FDs can be
ordered. QBP Part #DP6022. Probably about $10 from an LBS.

Sure. Any piece of nylon or aluminum 1/16" =1.58mm thick will do. Or the
appropriate clamp liner (brand? model?). Or the appropriate derailleur
body. Or the appropriate derailleur.

Excellent. Thanks for the tip. I'll have a word with my LBS and see what
they have. It's always good to go to your LBS knowing what's potentially
available.

A short piece of Schedule 40 PVC pipe will do. I have one on my bike
to fit a front derailleur I bought online. I painted it black to match
my frame and it's just about invisible.

For those plastic shims, did you find it altered the rigidity of the
setup and affected the crispness of shifting?

No problems with Delrin or PVC.
A wad of duct tape won't work well despite its common use.
