Dear John,

By 1960, Bowden's impractical 1946 electrical-assist design had been
reduced to a 50-pound "streamlined" lookalike with no assist:

If you read to the end of the article, you discover that it ended up
powering its "futuristic" head lights, tailight, and horn with D-cell
batteries instead of generating any electric power on its own.

Cheers,

Carl Fogel

Dear TF,

Yesterday I was looking into Steinmetz, Einstein, and Tesla and
stumbled over a similar case of who's-that-in-the-picture.

Here's the famous picture of Einstein and Steinmetz, showing the two
geniuses posing together:
http://chem.ch.huji.ac.il/history/steinmetz_einstein.jpg

But fans of Tesla suspect dirty work at the cross-roads because
there's a version of the same photo that shows another fellow between
Steinmetz and Einstein who looks a lot like Tesla.

Here are both versions of the photo:
http://www.radlab.com/img/Tesla.jpg

In fact, there's yet another version of the photo that shows a fourth
and fifth man in the corners:
http://www.divus.cz/images/umelec/tes04-mini.jpg

Horrors! It turns out to be an air-brushed GE marketing department
fraud:

"The heavily retouched photo, with only Steinmetz and Einstein,
is originally from the book "The Steinmetz Era", by B. Gorowitz.
This was sponsored by GE and was published by what I believe is
their own internal publishing label (Elfun Hall Publications).
The caption in that book for the photo reads 'Another of
Steinmetz's distinguished visitors was Albert Einstein who came
to Schenectady in 1921. It was in that year Einstein received
the Nobel Prize in Physics'. "

"Perhaps no photo of that event was taken, so the other photo was
doctored up to manufacture such a record. The real photo was
also taken in 1921, but was not in Schenectady, NY, but in New
Brunswick, at a wireless symposium."

Here's the full original photograph, showing 18 men (including
Langmuir) next to Steinmetz and Einstein:

Anyway, Tesla fans go crazy about how those GE bastards deliberately
air-brushed Tesla out of the picture of Steinmetz and Einstein to rob
him of his rightful--

Oops. The guy in the middle isn't Tesla.

One guy in a heavy coat and hat with a big black moustache looks a lot
like another:

"After conferring with Leland Anderson and searching back to original
sources which included the an article in the New York Herald, and the
original caption for the photo, it has been determined that the man
standing between Einsten and Steinmetz was one John Carson, who was an
engineer for AT&T. This photo has also been doctored to air-brush out
all individuals except for Einstein and Steinmetz by the GE people who
use it to imply a special relationship between Steinmetz and
Einstein."

So that's Johnny Carson aibrushed out of the photo between Steinmetz
and Einstein. I'm not sure which one of the other guys is Ed McMahon.

Cheers,

Carl Fogel
