View Full Version : Anybody riding in Minnesota?

Just saw that Minnie is 40 below. Brrrutal!

I've got some cycling buddies who just moved out there from NYC, where
the weather has been good enough for daily riding with only a couple
exceptions.

Not me, but we have a cadre of rear-'round cyclists. The -40F was up
north and northwest; here in the Twin Cities it hasn't even gotten down
to -20F yet this winter. I saw dozens of people out riding even on the
coldest days.

I'm too old to have a point to prove riding on icy streets in frigid
temperatures. I don't need to be out of work for a few weeks because
some cager lost control and smacked into me on the ice, or because I
slid out on black ice. 25F and up is fine, if the streets are
reasonably clear. 5-6" of snow tomorrow night, the streets aren't going
to be clear for a while. Maybe I need to get a Pugsley.

International Falls, MN is the perennial USA cold weather winter champ. Far
from any moderating large body of water, e.g. an ocean. And people actually
*live* there - it is not on a mountain pass somewhere, which only has a NWS
monitoring station.

The Fullerton, CA LBS I use is owned by a fellow from Minnesota, and his
manager is from Minnesota. I stopped by on Monday, and two very fit
looking guys were there talking to the manager. One of them told me
they were from Minnesota, too. They had ridden the Tour de Palm Springs
century on Saturday, and did another 112 miles on Sunday. They went to
Solvang Monday evening, and Tuesday, while ingesting caffeine, were
asked by David Millar to take a picture with him (that's their story,
anyway - I saw the picture).

So people FROM Minnesota are riding, just not IN Minnesota!

I was just thinking the same thing. I know my mtbs would do the trick,
but GAWD I want a Pugsley.

Anybody here own a Pugsley?

I thought one rode year-'round to avoid becoming rear-'round.

I never include AK in discussions like this. Because AK has very few PEOPLE
(per square mile). I am sure AK has Internet. But I am still waiting to
hear from a AK bicycle rider.

December 23rd, 2006. It begins thus:

"Today I went for a short ride. Words have not been invented to describe
the unpleasantness of it."

That said, this indomitable spirit still rides, and the latest entry
indicates she has chalked up nearly 180 miles in February.

This is a humiliatingly greater amount of mileage than I have put up in
Vancouver, where the conditions might be considered bad by Vancouver
standards, at worst.

There are quite a few cyclists in Anchorage, which has a relatively mild
climate due to ocean currents. Nothing there that would foil an intrepid
Chicagoland cycling commuter, except for the occasional moose or brown
bear that wanders onto the road.

Hey, Vancouver is no worse than Seattle -- and you have a health
plan. Anyway, you should be out riding -- particularly this weekend
which looks to be pretty nice in all the PNW. I can't ride due to my
broken leg, but my doctor told me that the surgical wound over my knee
(where he drove the Ti rod in to my tibia) is healed enough that I can
ride a trainer with no resistance. I figure I'll give that a whirl
this weekend and maybe log a mile or two on my whithered leg in its
big velcro boot. Maybe I'll open a basement window and get the feeling
of the great outdoors. -- Jay Beattie.

I seem to recall one AK rider, reporting in to RBT. I did not check his
headers to verify. Are there actually many more AK RBT lurkers?

There used to be a regular on ARBR who lived in Anchorage, but she only
posts to dog groups in recent years. The was also a guy on ARBR who
claimed to live in Barrow.
