London Mayor True To Form (Totally Useless)
Davey learns from the media this morning that Labour’s Ken Livingstone is
under pressure to drop sprinter Linford Christie from the Olympic
torch procession.
This follows the disclosure that Red Ken has invited Christie to carry
the Olympic torch when it arrives in London in April ahead of this
summer’s Beijing Games. Unfortunately for Livingstone, Olympic chiefs
and others are more than a little peeved and are demanding that
Christie should not be part of the procession - which also includes
Dame Kelly Holmes and Sir Trevor McDonald.
In case rbr readers, like Livingstone apparently, suffer from memory
loss – it should be recalled that Christie received a two-year
international ban in 1999 for using steroids, which was followed up
with a lifetime ban from the British Olympic Association!
A spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee, Emmanuelle
Moreau, is reported as being: “surprised and disappointed” at the
invitation. She added:
“The IOC has not been consulted about this and we wish we had been as
we would have certainly strongly recommended not to give an
invitation to an athlete who has an Olympic ban.” What Livingstone’s
motives were in extending an invitation to a disgraced athlete can
only be guessed at, but would he have done so had Christie not been a
member of an ethnic minority we wonder?
