itsa comparative deal.
helmets save lives
but dayglo Walmart baseball caps at $2.50 (unless itsthe day before
groundhog season)
are VISIBLE thus reducing accidents maybe 10xxxx.

Helmets are mostly not visible therby increasing the probs for
accidents over dayglo baseball caps.

dayglo helmet covers!!! in a bug proof mesh, lycra or spandex with
poly snuggly fitting the Bell or Giro.

with a loop atop for a we elight goes blinky blinky blinky

For years after W.W.II the Russians were leaders in brain research, Why?
During a large part of the 2nd WW very few of their troops were equipped
with helmets so they suffered for more head injuries.

Many the medical rounds in a neurology ward is called "watering the
vegetables"

The only truly effective helmet would feature a superlight
auto-targeting terawatt laser on a 360/270 gimbal that would
autovaporize cars, trucks and SUVs operated by people talking on cell
phones. Of course, you'd need a lot of high-temp gas outflow
protection...

I should think that the fact that

a) Scharf (who won't provide citations for the claims he makes that are in
contradiction to the wealth of information available);
b) Sornson (who can't do simple maths and prefers to 'ignore data";
c) Ozark (an admitted pro-MHL crazy);
d) Pirerro (who randomly threatens violence when asked polite questions
about his reasoning); and
e) Clare-at-Snyder (who wants to use religion as his guidance but gets very
upset and refuses to answer questions when that is pointed out)

are in favour of helmets is sufficient indication that there is probably
little to recommend them.

But if that's not enough, try www.cyclehelmets.org.

ahhhh? I'm at a loss for words. The top of your head is the most
visible point. Using the synaptic threshold of SUV pilots, helmet
colors are inadequate colors for closing the pilot's brain circuits in
recognition of BICYCLE DEAD AHEAD.

There's a major post on helmet safety or not. The major question
raised here is not to wear or not to wear but to wear a helmet to
increase visibility not decrease visibility.

NOT run over is the goal before not splitting the head open AFTER
first impact.

VISIBILITY is primary, head safety is secondary but head safety with
head visibility now you're talkin' turkey.

I don't know that it matters to motorists. How many times have
motorists SEEN the bicycle and just assumed that it would
stop/slow/turn in plenty of time to avoid an accident - so they cut it
off regardless of visibility issues.

The foam bicycle hat would make an acceptable mounting point for a

Actually, "research" has shown homeopathy to be bull**** for over a
hundred years. It's the reason I don't shop at my locally owned
grocery. I'll support local, but I won't support lying and bull****,
and have told them as much. Their "homopathic 'medicine'" section
seems to have grown.

Anyway, helmets are 'merican panacea. Wear them if you're barreling
down singletrack at 30mph. If you're fetching dog food, just don't
ride like a **** and wear a jaunty cap.

Thank you for amplifying my point: valid research does prove
homeopathy to be bogus. But, the quality of "research" that "shows"
homeopathy to be effective is the same type of "research" to which the

What if you want to get crazy on the way to the grocery? Swing by the

I did that the other day. The kids thought I was a narc.

Delicious! Like miniature mackerels. Good with cracked pepper and
lemon. Only $1.40. Lots of calcium.

Heh... that happened to me last summer. I show up on my DK General
Lee and show a little skill and I'm cool with everyone. Then another
day I'm on the fixie spinning around the city enjoying the day when I
decided to swing on by the skate park and see if there was anyone
there talented (or untalented) enough to be entertaining to watch for
a few. I never found out because when I swung in there on the skinny
tires the place clammed up. Conversations stopped and a group of
skaters bunched up on the other side of the park and started looking
over at me and acting sketchy. I didn't want to ruin their high (the
paranoia can be a mo-fo) so I just took off. I honestly think some of
them were the same kids that were taking to me when I was riding the
quarter pipe on my other bike. Oh, the penalties of aging!

Well, I got stuck over at the Two Rivers skate park because eight
freakin' park cops decided to block the ped bridge me and a buddy had
crossed "illegally" as it wasn't open officially, and they were
prancing around threatening us with *huge* tickets for trying to cross
back. Pah-thetic.

At any rate, we tired of the posturing and rode up to the park to wait
for my buddy's wife to show up in an emasculating minivan to rescue us
as there was no way home via bike. The kids actually relaxed after we
turned out to just be dudes on bikes, but when one kid yelled "COPS!"
it was quite a scene, all the unhelmeted riders threw their bikes over
the fence and then pogoed over themselves. About half a dozen lit
joints whizzed like tracers onto the ground. Doing backflips on a bmx
in a concrete bowl is impressive. Doing it baked is wicked impressive.

I hate that kind of thing. Quality use of taxpayer dollars, isn't it?

Ouch - the call of shame. At least it was for an original reason.

That's too funny. We do that over here all the time, most of the
parks have "No Bikes Allowed" signs, including the one at the school
by where I work. They didn't have any problems getting my old BMX
team to help raise the money they needed to build the park, but as
soon as it was done some of the people that worked the hardest for it
had the gate slammed in our faces. Awesome.

> About half a dozen lit joints whizzed like tracers onto the ground.

That's too funny. You should have walked over, picked one up and hit
it or pretended to hit it, depending where your morals lie on that
subject.

> Doing backflips on a bmx
> in a concrete bowl is impressive. Doing it baked is wicked impressive.

Couldn't agree more. Backflips have always been well outside of my
skill set. Then again, when I was riding 20" all the time they were
out of the skill set of all but the elite. Funny how fast "rad" gets
passé and the impossible becomes standard.

I remember one day a couple of us decided to learn backflips in high
school. Too bad cell phones didn't have video cameras back then! It
was quite the site and experience. I never got more than half way
before I saw I was too low and threw the bike. Having the knowledge I
have now none of us had a snowballs chance off that particular jump.

Pre-emptive anaestethic, that's all :)

I knew a guy who had his front teeth knocked out while under the
influence of an alcohol and pills combo. He made it to an emergency
dentist and the dentist determined that the teeth were viable for
reinsertion. When asked whether he wanted an anaestethic before this
rather painful procedure was to be performed he simply flashed a bloody
and incomplete smile and mumbled: "nah, I've got better stuff onboard
already..."

Still, that ended his pharmaceutical experiments. He realized that
drunk stupid AND mobile is a far more dangerous combination than drunk
stupid and incapacitated.

I was very tempted to ask, "Hey, how much does one of those 'bridge
closed' signs cost?"

Followed with "And disregarding equipment costs, what is the hourly
wage it's costing us for each of you to stand there?" Unfortunately,
that may well have been more trouble than it would have been worth.

It's not the money, it's the power that's important.

Last Sunday one of the people skiing in our group got a $75 ticket
because his service dog was off-leash. Yeah, it should have been
on-leash, but it was not causing any problems, and a simple "please put
your dog on a leash" from the park ranger would have been sufficient. It
took 30 minutes while the ranger ran checks on the guy (based on
driver's license number), and wrote the ticket, including height,
weight, eye color. Then the address in the state computer didn't match
his current address and that took more time to clarify.

Ohhh, yeah. We got us a mightily corrupt force around here. The
neighborhood guys are really cool, but the parks guys might as well
have been taken straight from Deliverance.

One night, 0200, I was out around the corner on the
bicycle watching the firemen work on a building that
had caught fire. I was rolling illegally on the side
walk, and a police officer told me not to. The police
officer was in the street. Nobody else was on the side
walk. Middle of the night, I'm away from all the
activity in a position where I will not interfere with
anybody, and this police officer is giving me grief. I
gave grief right back, saying (not in so many words)
that the order was totally chicken****. Of course I
did not ride the bike on the side walk. Neither did
the police officer say anything back at me.

Why on gods green earth would one surrender their drivers license for
a dog-off-leash ticket?

Interesting and similar story: When I lived in Salem, MA we used to
take my dog to the Forest River Park all the time. I never leashed my
dog. It's posted at the park, along with the fine of $100. My dog is
perfectly behaved, and listens to my every command. I decided it was
worth the $100 if I ever got bagged for all the fun we'd have playing
fetch and such. One day I was grilling some lunch, sipping a beer
when I saw a cop. I whistled, and told sandy to sit and stay. I
didn't even have a leash with me, it was in the car. The cop walked
right past me, looking at the food, the beer and the dog. The
exchange went like this:
"Afternoon officer"
"Afternoon"
"Can't ask for much more than this, can we?"
"Nope"
"Have a good one"
"You too"

I wasn't an issue, the dog was obviously under control, and he just
went on his way. "The way things should be" in my book. Then again,
a Salem MA cop sees real crime and real problems.

Back when Sandy was just a pup we were on the front page of the local
paper of the small town I grew up in. Sandy was learning how to use
the slide, and a local reporter saw it and came over to take photo's
and interview. I half expected a citation for an unleashed dog to
follow in the mail, given the harassment she & I had endured at that
park in the past from the local PD. They didn't really have much to
do at the time, so they wasted their time and equipment doing things
like having me leash the controlled dog I was playing fetch with and
chasing dirt bikes that were riding off-road. One cop got so
ambitious that he *totaled* a brand new cruiser chasing a dirt bike
down the old RR track route. Apparently he was new and didn't expect
the "whoops" until the cruiser was airborne.

My guess is that the ranger who ticketed your friend didn't get a
chance to exercise his power often.

It's not required to have ID, but it's still a crime to give false
information about your identity (a federal crime in this case) so I'm
not sure what the upside would have been in refusing.

I suspect you're right. He also was with some woman that he might have
been trying to impress (who we referred to as a hussy after the incident).

Just a matter of principal. If some bozo wants to go on a power trip
and demand my license when I'm not driving, I won't produce it. I've
gotten into this when riding my bike. I've actually had a cop tell me
"If you don't produce an ID right now you're going to jail". He never
got an ID, and I never went to jail. An exception is if I'm a
passenger, since I don't want my defiance to hurt the driver of the
vehicle. If I've got a firearm concealed on me I'll present my
permit, but if it's not concealed or in the cab of my vehicle I'll
press the issue. In that instance I might eventually cave if it comes
to arrest, but often times you can educate the uninformed officer
about the law. That makes life better for everyone in the long run.
There's a group that does that stuff regularly in NH, and they'll
press it to the point of arrest. They also have things in place to
record the events as a defense if it comes to that. Kind of doing my
small part to slow down the eventual nanny-state Real ID society that
we're on the way to becoming.

Bozo. Odds are she just wrote him off as a chump.

BTW, Nashbar is or was selling an excellent Terramar balclava for
$10. Rolls up into a watch cap for use as hair control for the rear
mirror and dayglo baseball cap helmet padding.

the idea is maybe expandable into a thin foam shell with an occiptal
protection band.
