I have Edge 305 - bought it couple weeks ago from REI.
They sell it for $360 (HRM and cadence/speed sensor included)
which is rather ridiculous - you van find it on Web for 100 bucks
less. But I wanted to have REI unconditional warranty and not have
to deal with some unknown dealer on Web.
Is it worth it? My opinion is probably not very informed b/c that
is only the second bike computer I had and 1st w/ GPS but I will say
HELL YEAH. Made my training so organized and measurable I could not
suspect. Basic Training Center it comes with is not very useful but
download free SportTracks and add few free plugins and you have
great training lab (downloads weather with altitide temperature
adjustement, wind and calculates power data). 205 does not have
cadence sensor and HRM - I guess HRM you can always buy cheapo Polar.
As far as GPS part - it records route, speed and elevation perfectly
but I must admit I did not try to navigate using 305 yet. It does
not have base map (for that you need to shell $600+ for 705) but
you can program you course using any Internet GPS website eg.
GPSies.com and upload it to 305 - you will see it on your screen
a line with arrow showing you position. I understand it can warn
you about coming turn and if you veer off the course it will show
you compass with heading toward closes track point. I guess that
may be enough not to get lost in some new subdivision is suburbs.
I am very happy with mine - wish I bought it earlier. But I cannot
comment on reliability - had it only for two weeks. It is fairly
small and light but seems sturdy and display is readable even if
you program it to show time, speed, cadence, distance, heart rate
and heart zone. Nice fearure is Auto Lap - you press Lap button
and it ends current lap and will start new lap every time you pass
thru same point.

Yes, obsolete. Yes, buy. It's a good product, and you'll be getting it
for half what the early adopters paid; most of them seem happy with
their purchase.
Of course, wait another couple of years and you'll get a colour
screen, base maps and wireless connection to your SRM for $180 too, so
only you can decide when to jump aboard the bike GPS train.

Yeah I know. But in a grand scheme of things I like having REI
in my corner - if that 305 will start acting up in 2 months I will
be able to return or exchange it w/o any question.

NYT tech/electronics reviewed the add on contract area several months
ago finding costly insurance and maintenance contracts beyond 30 days
were largely mkney down the hole.
Solid state electronics malfunctions occur off the assembly line,
intransit, or from first use-Iassume from not reading the directions
first or Murphy's Disagreement.
But I agree. Tiger Electronics is too far over the horizon.

I got a Forerunner 205 for Christmas and I use it to calibrate my
regular computer after changing tires. Go for a ride with both,
compare the distances, adjust the wheel setting by whatever % the
milage was off by. I also plan to use it for triathlons (it's
waterproof), and hopefully for skiing if I get around to it this year.
Uploading a ride from Garmin Training Center to Google Earth is
severely cool.

Do not wait for 705 - if you want GPS computer then get 205 (or 305
if you need HRM and cadence). And yes uploading to Google Earth and
doing Play Tour is very severely cool.
