A tad chilly out here in Berkeley, too. During last night's barbecue I
had to walk back inside and put on a sweater.

Ah but was there a bike race? The link is good for the Vuelta Castilla y
Leon each at 15h30 European time
Some sections of the roads looked worse than they were in Koln when they
cancelled.

Very light, intermittent snow in Vancouver, too.
It's clear we need to convene a Sausalito posse to deal with Chung's
smugness.

A brother-in-law laughs at us. His sister told him on the
telephone one day that we were having a heat wave. He said
"What? Did you have to take off your sweaters?" He was living
in Louisiana at the time.

1. While you're there, check to see if Papai is still waiting at that
Starbucks.
2. Don't hate me because I live in Berkeley. Hate me because I split

Impossible. United has determined that there is little interest in that
particular city-pair. Not for the past 4 years anyway. The only reasonable
"Continental" option (which it really isn't) is San Francisco/London. They
can't add enough flights for that route. But not to Paris. Paris is dead.

I've done it via Delta, but was on an Air France plane.

Yes, I know. And I will likely avoid AF in the future based upon experiences
on just one flight (which, I agree, is kinda dumb). I had *finally* managed
to sleep, just a bit (and I almost never sleep on planes), about 3 hours out
of Paris. And that's when the flight attendants decided that, not only was
it time to serve what passes for "breakfast" on a plane, but that it was
also time for EVERYONE to wake up. So they went through rolling up all the
shades (seriously, leaning way over people to do it!) and seemed to enjoy
making as much clanging noises with their carts as they could manage. It was
a surreal experience.
At least that's how I remember it. :>)
More seriously, for someone 6', being able to get a seat with more legroom
on UA (E+) is of great help.
I don't know why UA has given up on Paris. They're presently shutting down
their arrivals lounge, and they've made substantial cutbacks in flights over
the years. Paris, for UA, is strictly a destination, not a hub. London is
used as a hub, and so obviously it gets a lot more attention. But why? LHR
(Heathrow) is a nightmare to get through. Hmm. LHR vs CDG. OK, you're right,
it's not as if we're comparing one airport that's on a different level from
another; the lines at CDG often make no sense as they snake through areas in
a most-bizarre fashion.
I've used London, Zurich, Amsterdam and Paris as gateways into Europe.
Zurich is nondescript, which would be a plus except that it's a bit out of
the way (unless you're heading for the Alps). Amsterdam is probably the
most-pleasant of the airports. Paris is the most fun, if you're into
people-watching. It's very easy to spot those who are there for the first
time.

That's evoking pity, not hatred.
I realize that's a bit of PKB, but it is what it is.

Most likely because they can't compete with the Cheesy-jet set flying
about a zillion flights daily between the London and Paris airports.
In other words, although there's a bit of pain involved, you can
probably do the (usually very cheap) whatever-London flight followed by
a $0-100 London-Paris hop, and this is way less than the typical direct
flights ought to cost.
That leaves a route with poor economics, so most airlines abandon it,
and that leaves Air France.

Until London gets their various airports better connected (subway or
high-speed train, like the Gatwick & Heathrow Express), it's not so easy
switching from a mainline carrier to Cheesy-jet. And then there are the
various rude awakenings when you find out that the contents of your pockets
are weighed and charged for. I don't even want to think what they might
charge to carry a bike! Not that mainline carriers aren't beginning to do a
number on that one; Air France has taken the lead with charges that can run
up to $200 each way.
If only Eurostar was a bit more reasonable! I've used it a couple of times,
but not yet from the new station, so I don't know how difficult it is to
connection with LHR (Heathrow).
