Has any US based multi stage race tried this before? This will either
be really fun, or really freakin' stupid. A crit on this course may
be fun to watch though.

"Two firsts for the Tour will take place on Thursday, April 24 - venue
and event. Stage Four (view course layout ) features a 10-mile (16.1
km) Team Time Trial at Road Atlanta. Renowned for its hilly 2.5-mile,
12-turn race track used for motorsports events like Petit Le Mans,
Road Atlanta will host a Tour stage for the first time. The Tour de
Georgia has hosted an individual time trial for four consecutive
years, but this is the inaugural Team Time Trial. In this exciting
race against the clock, each team must field all eight riders at one
time. Teams will begin in heats; two teams on the track at once. More
details about this stage will be announced on March 19th."

IIRC, the 1987 Pan Am games TTT in Indianapolis was held on the Indy 500
track. However it does not have the elevation changes that RA has. That
could disrupt team rhythm considerably.

Pretty twisty and technical for a TTT, but should be interesting if not a
complete CF.

Not really technical at all at bicycle speeds; RA's not really even
considered a tight course by motor racing standards. And not that hilly
either by cycling standards; max elevation difference around the 2.5mi is
about 110ft or so as I recall, with the biggest climb at any one point being
around half that. Think they're running it counterclockwise, backwards from
the way the motors do it, which will make it even less technical since they
won't be dropping down the steep way into the esses, though the climbing
will be tougher doing that way.
They used to have road races there around 20 years ago in fact. Seems to be
a mini-resurgence of such; in fact there was just a local race held at
Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL.
