If you want an exciting Tour, you want to maximize the number
of riders that think they've got a shot. That maximizes the
number of riders willing to take chances, thinking it could
pay off big.
Usually this happens after the retirement of a major figure.
The end of Hinault, Indurain, and LANCE's careers were all
marked by fabulous editions of the Tour. Hard fought with
lots of drama.
The green jersey competition will miss Boonen. But that's a
sideshow.
The Tour will not miss Astana. And two weeks from now you guys
will all be paying as close attention as ever.

Unfortunately it will be an apteryx Tour this year and not worth watching.
Without Contador and Levi the racing is meaningless.
Vuelta Espania is looking better all the time.

I didn't realize there were any New Zealanders lining up today,
But I've been telling you lot for years that the Tour has been boring,
saving the spectacular dopers, for the last 10 years.
Personally I prefer the Giro these days with the Vuelta a close
sezcond
Now if we could only get McBoggy away from the swill bin long enough
to quit feeding his obscenely large and ever expanding gut to whisper
into his ear that if he really wants to put the proverbial boots to
the Tour of Dog****Reich, he should move the Vuelta back to where it
always was - early season - , defer the Giro until July and Tour de
DSR until October.

That would be a good idea except that ASO have covered their asses by
buying into both the other tours. I wonder if a case could be made to
the EU anti-trust people (who seem to be quite active) on this.

You're comparing apples to jackhammers. Two weeks from now, we'll have
some good doping controversies to talk about. That trick ALWAYS works.

No we won't. WADA used leaks as a weapon against the riders,
without regard to what that did to the race. All they cared
about was cutting the rider's income to make it harder to
fund a defense. WADA is out of the picture this year. While
I don't think that means there won't be doping scandals, I
do think they will be managed so that the race is not damaged.
