A neighbor that saw the incident called police and gave plate number to police. Child was my grandson. Face is swollen by he is ok. Just for the record the person that saw it said he was were he was suppose to be on the right and by the edge. Not in the way of car. car going to fast for area.

Wow that sucks. Is quail meadows a subdivision? Kudos for the neighbor seeing it and taking the plate down.

Yes it is. It is off Millbrook and Fall it is very small just two blocks all of four strreets.
The cop said the only thing they could get him on was leaving the seen since he did not hit the bike. How is that for bull.

I don't mean to cause controversy, I ask this question more because I don't have children and am seeking enlightenment.... Would 5 years old be considered an appropriate age for a child to be out on the road unsupervised, even in a subdivision when vehicles should be moving slowly?

Jon: I hear what you're saying, but Quail Meadows is a very quiet neighborhood... It's in the vicinity of All-Star Bike Shop (Falls of Neuse location). Quail Hollow Drive connects several of the neighborhoods and can get sorta fast. However, there's no reason that kids should be threatened on those streets.

jon, theres no way in hell i'd let my son, who is 5, out in the road. im scared enough to take him out in our subdivision with our spiffy tandem. people in cars are a-holes, and its hard enough to come to terms with that every time i want to go for a ride, let alone let my kids come with me. i live in a very small sub and i still dont risk it. if i dont have another adult to walk with my daughter as she trails behind on her own bike while me and my son do the tandem thing, we just dont go. no reason kids of any age should be threatened on our street, or any street in my small neighborhood, but with my dog getting hit by a car immediately after she jumped the fence in our yard to meet me and my son who were out in the road in front of our house on our bikes, theres just no way i'd feel safe anywhere but the greenways with my kids and their bikes. it sucks, but so would losing one of my babies. it almost killed me to see Killian in the hospital for a week. if that was my kid, someones house would have been burned to the ground.

Ok The roads are usually used only by people in this very very small neighborbood It only has three streets in it. My road is the only one that they can use to get from falls to millbrook. Which they were not on They were being watched by the other child 's mother from her drive which was up the street by three house clear view. The other neighbor that called cops was right there beside them. The kids here have to be car safe because they can get to millbrook and falls just by walking as half block any time. Donivan has been riding with me on the rode for over a year. He knows his hand signs and all the rules. He does not brake them for fear I will take his bike away. I would rather have him here on the road then Up at shelly lake with the wired bikers that have taken out at least three walker and two kids on training wheel. I grew up in Boston area riding bikes so these roads are quiet to those. Kids in this area are on bikes everyday so you have to teach them how to be safe. Greenway or road they can get hurt.

lol the path at shelley lake is dangerous for anyone who wants to use it. if youre on foot, people on wheels mow by you. if youre on wheels, nobody gets the hell out of your way!

I agree. The only greenway that I would take a bike on is the American Tobacco Trail, and even then you have to watch out for equestrians (and horse biscuits). If you think drivers can be obnoxiuos, they do not even hold a candle to equestrians. On the other hand, if you have ever been on a horse that has been spooked, you can understand why equestrians insist that everyone must yield to them (not to mention that is the rule of the road - wheels give way to feet, and everyone gives way to horses).

Sandy,
The difficulty in all the cases that we've heard about recently is proving that the driver's actions were deliberate. Not knowing more about the circumstances of what happened and what the witnesses observed, the police officer may be correct about what he/she would be able to make stick. If it's any consolation, leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, some times a felony, at least a misdemeanor, regardless of whether the accident was caused by deliberate behavior or not. (All riders take note).

Just for am up date Donivan is ok he still has a swollen nose and lip one black eye and plenty of cut on his face . He is a tough kid. He said he is riding tomorrow with me. The other child was not hurt that was with him even though she went down also but hit grass. The neighbor said the person was on the phone. It was the second time that same car came around on the road seemed to be looking for some place or at the houses for sale. Does not think he saw the kids are anything else for that matter. The police said they would contact us with a follow up on the incident.

This is getting unbelievable how irresponsible people are these days. Sorry to hear about this.

Unfortunately, paying attention on the road is a thing of the past. I often wonder how much of that has to do with the driver being surrounded by air bags. Are we at a point that people are not concerned if they hit something because of the protection they have?

I don't think it is being cocooned by air bags. I think it is failure to believe that they are capable of poor driving due to distraction. "I am invulnerable, and I can multitask and pay attention to driving, phone call, programming the GPS, and searching for a radio station, all at the same time. I am also such a good driver that it isn't dangerous for me to tailgate 1 carlength behind someone at 70mph on the highway". It is sad that people spend more of their attention and energy practicing playing a game on their Wii than driving a 2000 lb car that can kill someone.
Just because all of these things are available in your car doesn't mean that you can handle using them all while driving.
I don't know what happened to people thinking through the consequences of their actions.

Tell me about it. Someone turned left in front of me yesterday afternoon and I had nowhere to go. Managed to turn enough that I didn't hit her square on, but both of our vehicles had to be towed away. She said she saw me but thought I was going to turn left. That's not something I typically do when I'm in a straight lane, but whatever.
Thank god I was in a car instead of on a bike. This is the first time in over 33 years of driving that I have not been able to avoid a collision. Even got first hand experience with airbags, something I hope to never repeat. At least neither of us were hurt and my insurance company is super easy to deal with.
The worst part is it messed up my riding schedule!

I am really glad you were not hurt. Donivan got on his bike today for the first time. He would not go down the steet that he fell on. He said he would next week just not today.I remember me on spring forest After I was taken out. I would not go down that way for awhile. Oh yeah they got the driver. All I know is he is paying the medical and bike repair if it needs it on his own. He said he did not see the kids and if he knew they had fallen he would have stopped. That is what the police told us Friday. Also most likely he will only get the ticket with a big fine it would be up to DA what happens next

It's great to hear they got him. It's hard to say if he really didn't see the kids, but you have to take him at his word because one would hope nobody would intentionally drive away after seeing anyone's child potentially hurt.
