Well, it is that time of year again when Ragbrai rages over the State of
Iowa. I do not know which is more stupid. Ragbrai or the Tour de France. One
is all about touring and the other is all about racing. You have got to be
crazy to do either.
I like week long organized bike tours but Ragbrai is an abomination. It is
simply too large. It is well organized for such a large ride, but - damn
it - it is just too large. It will range up to 10,000 riders are certain
days. The kind of folks who do Ragbrai are basically brainless. They simply
do not know what a good bike tour is like. I fell sorry for the poor slobs.
But hey, you like to stand in line for basic services, be my guest. No
wonder everyone is drinking themselves drunk on Ragbrai. Hells Bells, I
would too. It is the only way to survive this horror known as RAGBRAI.

True enough, but the death rate is about the same regardless. However, I do
think Ragbrai riders have more fun.
By the way, Ragbrai is not an easy ride to do. I actually admire those who
can survive it. But there are many other better week long bike tours that
one can do than Ragbrai. Still, those who do it are loyal to it to the
bitter end. Go figure!

I lost the OP, so I will respond to here.
RAGBRAI is not meant to be an organized 'bike tour' in the sense of what we
think of when you hear the term the 'bike tour', nor is it "touring" per se.
It is an organized (in some ways better than others) rolling festival across
Iowa. It is not about touring by bike, it is about experincing a week long
festival celebrating what is good about midwestern Americana, meeting people
from literally all over the world, and generally having fun. It just so
happens to be by bike, but actually the biking is secondary. That may still
be stupid in some people's eyes, but it is a hoot!
When Ed says 10,000 riders he is not exagerating, usually many more than
that. They issue 10,000 weeklong passes, plus there are any number of
individual day passes, and unregistered riders. On days into or out of more
populated areas of the state there are sometimes upwards of 15,000 + riders.
And I do agree with Ed - that is too many. Also, he is partially right in
that many of the folks are clueless about group rides, but certainly not all
as he implies.
Also just to be accurate, not everyone is partying and drinking all the
time. A vast minority of the people are hard partiers but they always seem
to get 90% of the press. The median age on ragbrai is in the mid 40's and
there are more and more families riding it each year. But yes, there are
partys a plenty to be found every day and night and "What goes on Ragbrai,
stays on Ragbrai."

I think Gary Mishler has got it right. I never thought of Ragbrai as a
festival before, but now that I do think about it, I think that is indeed
what it is. It is not really a bike tour at all. I guess that is why I never
liked it much. I am not into festivals and hate the very concept of a
festival. After all, I never celebrate anything! We Dour Ones are like that.

When was the last time you were to a county fair? They have become dead
compared to what they were back in the 40's. They ought to be done away with
entirely. They are a relic of the past. I am also against parades since no
one knows how to do them anymore. 4th of July fireworks is something else
that should be killed.

I may be a dumbass, but at least I don't make unfounded accusations.
Doping is not a part of western culture, its an unsportsmanlike part
of sports. I've read all the articles and interviews of the poor bike
racer who HAD to do it to be competitive, seems to me they just want
an unfair advantage, perhaps they need to change jobs.

Dumbass,
I did the Seattle to Portland Fredfest a couple weeks ago. I met up with
some old friends at the first rest stop and rode with them. When we
reached the halfway point, they ALL pulled out pills and started popping
them. "This prevents cramps." etc. Thankfully, I had a bee sting self
injector strapped to my seat stay. I told them it was my heroin supply
and I fit right in.

Anything goes on Ragbrai. You will not only see lots of drunkenness, but you
will also see practically naked people showing you what they got. Ugh - no
thanks! But almost naked or not, there is not 1 person in a 100 who ought to
be dressed in tight shorts. Truth to tell, most Ragbrai riders should be
wearing tents in order to cover up their hideousness.
This is all very hard on a Great Saint like Saint Edward the Great who is
easily offended by the unseemly and the improper. Yea, He is a Great Saint
who abhors all festivities and would prefer that everyone live a life of
asceticism like He does. The most important thing is not to go through life
looking like an unseemly slob, something that all Ragbrai riders have yet to
master.

Speaking of unfounded accusations, which bike racer in an interview,
said that they had to dope to be competitive?

You are wrong. Doping is a part of Western Culture.
Alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, marijuana, prozac, ritalin, ibuprofen,
aspirin, antihistimines, zoloft, adderral, xanax, valium, viagra,
cialis, methamphetamine, ginsing, birth control hormones.
That is but a very incomplete list and if you don't know hundreds of
people who use those substances, you're living in a cave.
Doping is a part of Western Culture.

I think the racing group must be as dead as ARBR. I have posted several of
my usual red flag messages there and no one ever rushes at me. I think
Usenet must be dying all over the world. It has no doubt outworn any welcome
it ever had.
Soon the entire universe of Usenet will be reduced to JimmyMac and Ed Dolan
calling each other names on ARBR. But I foresee the day when it will just be
Ed Dolan the Great commiserating with Himself. JimmyMac is due for a divorce
any day now and that will be the end of him. Even his two faithful old hound
dogs will desert him in disgust. He is not Great like I am and cannot live
on his own.

The only reason that "dumbass" gets used is that Dan Savage already
trademarked "hey faggot." All things considered, around here, "dumbass" is
a preferable to a lot of other things. I mean, what if instead of
"dumbass" we opened every message with "kunich"?

I read it in 2 recent issues of the Rodale Bicycle magazine, 2
differant interviews. I don't remember the names because I don't
follow bicycle racing. Seems the feel "pressured" to dope to be
competetive. Of course they only said this after being caught.

Let's be fair. It is part of every culture.
Chewing betel nuts, khat leaves, and cocaine leaves.
Opium eating, hashish eating.
People self medicate around the world,
and from the beginning of the world.
Western culture has its own style:
laboratory purification, laboratory modification.
Extract morphine from opium, add two acetyl groups,
ride the white horse.
NewsFlash! Drug use on the rise!

I was referring to doping as in performance enhancing drugs used by
athletes to improve their performance. You consider drinking coffee
and taking birth control hormones doping and you call me a dumbass,
perhaps it is you my friend who lives in a cave.

Hey, you god damn ****ing dumbass -
Don't you think the purpose for which you take a drug has something to do

No argument there.
I think, however, that Western culture has a much greater selection.
Probably it's just a function of post-industrial society and the
others will catch up/are catching up soon.

If you think about it objectively, those are also doping methods.
BTW, caffeine in excessive quantities is banned by the UCI. And
estrogen? Very powerful hormone. Stopping the reproductive process is
no joke. Testosterone is no more powerful a hormone than estrogen. You
just don't think of it that way because estrogen doesn't performance
enhance for sport. IMO, regulating the process of creating life makes
it at least as as powerful.

Who the hell are you to be calling anyone a dumbass right off the bat? Yes,
you ARE a dumbass, but that is no excuse for initiating a lot of name
calling. At least save that for the 2nd or 3rd post when you have something
to go on. If others want to waste their time on these forums, that is their
business. What the **** does it matter to you?
There is no one on Usenet who has spent more time taking to task the
futility of these forums. But before you call someone a dumbass, let them at
least prove to you that they are. The only thing that keeps these ****ing
forums going are newbies. At least be polite to them on their first few
posts.
You and I have been around for awhile and so we are both truly dumbasses to

The PURPOSE for which you take a drug overrules everything else.

There is no doubt that fooling around with hormone levels is risky. Many of
us who have gone through the prostate cancer thing have had to take an
anti-hormone shot and what it does is kill sexual desire. It in effect
de-sexes you. It also gives you hot flashes.
Most guys will not want to continue to take anti-hormone shots once they
have been treated for the cancer, but some continue anyway because they are
so fearful of the cancer returning. However, if the cancer has spread, that
may be the one best way for preventing it from spreading even further.
It may be that testosterone gives us prostate cancer in the end, but you
would not want to live without it. Did you know that bald men are more
likely to get prostate cancer? That is because they have more testosterone
than those who are not bald.
Anyone who thinks drugs are OK needs to read the history of the Chinese
experiment with opium in the 19th century, which ended with the Boxer
Rebellion. The fact is that no society can long function if it is riddled
with pleasure drugs. That is because people end up doing nothing but drugs.

Western Europe's relaxed attitude towards recreatiionals seems to be
working just fine.
In the US, a few of the drugs in the list are illegal, but most are
used w/ prescriptions and some (alcohol, nicotine, caffeine) are used
on a regular basis, perhaps by a majority of the population. Most
people learn how to deal with them just fine. The ones who cannot
usually have some sort of issue beyond drugs. The drug use is a
symptom something deeper.
Regardless, it is a fact that we live in a culture where most people
dope up regularly with something. Very few are totally clean.

Again, not true. ANYONE can easily become addicted to some drugs. All you
ever have to do is just try them in a permissive environment. Some
recreational drugs can kill you the first time you try them if you are
unlucky enough.

MOST people are not into recreational drugs, not even alcohol.
You need to come up with a rational explanation for why the Chinese were not
able to handle opium. After all, it was just a recreational drug that seemed
to be harmless.

That's a bunch of bull****.
I know this empirically. I'm a musician. At least half of the local
community would flunk a random drug test. At least half. Maybe three
quarters. In general they function just fine, mostly restricting the
use to weekend nights.
Some people do get addicted. IMO, it's usually a symptom of a deeper
chemical imbalance and the drug use in those people is a way of self-
medicating the problem.

This is true, some get addicted and paradoxically, some do not. I have
a friend who can take of the Peruvian snow at a party and then not
touch it until the next year. Some people report a horrible addition
to Tramadol (Ultram) an opiod like pain killer. Others have no
addiction at all.

Musicians are well known for being not only dopey, but dope heads. They are
frequently sexually depraved and degenerates as well. However, they
constitute the loony fringe in society as do all artists. I seriously doubt
that they function "just fine."

You need to read some history books about societies that have freely allowed
recreational drug use. Such societies don't last long.

I understand Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (makers of AndroGel®) is
coming out with a totally steroid-free Sun Block, called
"takebackthetour(tm)".
It's still in testing. No, really.

Europe baby. They're doing just fine.
BTW, most people in this country medicate also. Your assertion that
most people don't even drink alcohol is incorrect.
From:
http://ncadistore.samhsa.gov/catalog/facts.aspx?topic=3
Almost half of Americans aged 12 or older reported being current
drinkers of alcohol in the 2001 survey (48.3 percent). This translates
to an estimated 109 million people. Both the rate of alcohol use and
the number of drinkers increased from 2000, when 104 million, or 46.6
percent, of people aged 12 or older reported drinking in the past 30
days.

And that's just alcohol. There are a slew of other substances that
people partake of. I'll post other links if you continue to insist
that the majority of this country is squeaky clean substance free.

I suspect you and I hang out in different crowds. But even so, drinking
alcohol is sanctioned by Western societies. That is no reason for
introducing other recreational drugs. And 12 year old kids should not be
drinking anything except hot chocolate (cocoa).
Folks who drink to excess are a small minority. They are mostly scumbag
musicians like yourself I suspect. Europeans know how to drink better than
we do, but even so they have higher death rates from liver failure
(cirrhosis), especially the g.d. French.

I have never known anyone in my life who took drugs - other than alcohol of
course.
I will only go to your links if you will read a couple of books on the
Chinese experiment with opium in the 19th century which resulted in the
Boxer Rebellion. Those who do not know history are condemned to repeat it.

Yes, you are right of course, but nicotine does not really give much
pleasure if you ask me. I smoked for 10 years in my long lost youth, but it
seemed it was more a habit than anything else. Also it does not impact you
in any way provided it does not kill you in the end because of cancer, heart
disease, etc. Caffeine also falls into this class. I do not consider either
of them recreational drugs.
We are talking about recreational drugs that impact not only your life, but
the life of the society to which you belong. Nicotine is not in the same
class as alcohol or other similar type drugs that get you high or low.
I do not want to live in a society where recreational drugs are freely
available. I believe in the war on drugs - I just wish we could win it. It
would not bother me if we had to lock up 20% of the population due to drug
use if it would keep them off the streets.

Amsterdam has always had a notorious underside. It had one of the largest
Red Light districts of any city in Europe. I leave the rest to your
imagination. Sexual depravity and all the other vices go together. It is my
understanding that dope (cocaine) stimulates and enhances sex, as if human
swine need that!
Saint Edward the Great would not only like to see a drug free world, but
also a sex free world. That is His idea of Paradise.

Well, I have always like cocoa better than any other fluids. But can you
imagine kids drinking alcohol? I never drank a drop until I got in the Navy

The kind of guys I knew in the Navy just drank. The Navy was otherwise drug
free. This was in the 50's.
Your typical sailor from that era was interested in only 3 things - getting
drunk, getting in a fight and getting laid - and not necessarily in that
order. As you can probably figure out by now, I was NOT in my element. I
spent most of my time in base libraries reading books and wishing I was
someplace else.

Just so long as he doesn't own two guns. That wouldn't be acceptable.
I was curious though, what he would say about nicotine, since neither he
nor Henry brought it up. It's more addictive than heroin, the long-term
effects of smoking are fairly severe, and the cigarette and tobacco it
contains have been purposefully designed to be a dose-metering device for
the delivery of aerosolized free-base nicotine to the lungs (for maximum
addictivity). His answer suggests that rather than being opposed to
drugs in society per se, he just doesn't like other people having a good
time he is too scared to try. <shrug>

Nicotine does no harm to the society at large as far as everyday behavior is
concerned. This is not true of recreational drugs which incapacitate you by
giving you either a high or a low. Those types of drugs severely impact
society. I think society is about a million times more important than any
individuals that compose it, but god damn progressive liberals think just
the opposite of that. That is because they are swine!
If you can't have a good time without drugs, then get off the earth. And
take your ****ing drugs with you!
By the way, it was easy for me to give up cigarettes after smoking a pack a
day for 10 years. Hells Bells, I just stopped. Within 2 weeks I was free of
them forever. Some addiction!

As I understand cigarettes, the point is the endorphin
rush from scorching lung tissue. Know somebody who
simply quit cigarettes after three decades with no
withdrawal. Unusual, but it happens.

That's just his schtick.
Ed's a satirist, and pretty good at it, too.
Satirists shoot high and aim low. And true
satire is a trap: ("Step into my parlour"
said the spider to the fly.)
People's impulsive, knee-jerk responses to Ed's
ridiculous statements are more ridiculous than Ed's
ridiculous statements. Tempests within teapots.
People who get upset about Ed should get a life,
or at least think about what motivates them, and
what's most worthy of their consideration. And
maybe stop taking themselves so seriously.
We all tend to take ourselves too seriously.
It doesn't hurt to be reminded of that.
I rather appreciate it, myself.

Tom

How is Tom Sherman any different? In fact, the same might be said of anyone
who is posting to Usenet.
It is all a tale told by an idiot signifying nothing. But I am having some
fun. I hope the rest of you are too.

Tom Keats, a working man from the docks of Old Vancouver, is the only one
who has got me figured out to perfection. He is an Eric Hoffer in disguise.
Eric Hoffer (July 25, 1902 (or 1898) - May 21, 1983) was an American social
writer. He produced ten books and was awarded the Presidential Medal of
Freedom in February 1983 by President of the United States Ronald Reagan.
His first book, The True Believer, published in 1951, was widely recognized
as a classic, receiving critical acclaim from both scholars and laymen.[1]
This book, which he considered his best[citation needed], established his
reputation[citation needed]. He remained a successful[citation needed]
writer for most of his remaining years.

"The True Believer" is a masterpiece. It made a huge impression upon me when
I was young and full of beans. I recommend it to Tom Keats. He and Eric
Hoffer are kindred spirits.

Do any group bike tour in Wisconsin and you will see dozens of bikes parked
beside every bar and saloon along the way. Some of these guys are not just
drinking beer either. How you can have shots of whiskey and then get back on
a bike and ride I have never been able to figure out. Those of us who are
not complete slobs would reserve our beers for days' end when the cycling
was over.

I take prescription painkillers before I race.
So far there doesn't seem to be any proof that taking the painkillers
has improved my performance such as to allow me to place better than I
otherwise would have placed.
I still consider it doping.
I know that I wouldn't push myself nearly as hard as I do when I race
if I had a repeat performance of that time when I hurt so bad I
couldn't walk afterwards.

I'm not Eric Hoffer and I'm not anybody in disguise.
I'm just a new soul. I'm not anbody but a humble
Vancouver East-Ender. The Gasoline Alley where I come from.
But thank you very much for the linkage to, and recommendation
of Eric Hoffer.

I don't have any kindred spirits, and I don't
want any. Neither do you. You know how it is.
Eric Hoffer probably didn't, either.
Now I've gotta figure out how to make Chicken Kiev
using canned peach slices & heavy syrup instead of
that extremely treyf, hi-cholesterol butter thing.
Maybe replace the chicken with pheasant,
but keep the peaches & syrup.

You're joking right? The tobacco companies have a special term for the
feeling you get when the free-base nicotine hits the back of your throat:
impact. Smokers crave that feeling, apparently.

I had very minimal withdrawal after 15 years of smoking but after a year I
got a really bad case of "wannasmokes". But I held it off. I finally stopped
dreaming of smoking after 20 years!

I have to laugh! I too dreamed of smoking for about 20 years after I
stopped. I would wake up and think, my God, I am back to smoking!
I maintain the pleasure to be derived from smoking is very minimal. It is
mostly just a habit. I suppose there is some addiction, but it is minor
compared to the hard drugs. The trouble is that habits can be as hard to
quit as anything else.

I quit smoking at age 30. I'd been smoking for 15 years. Somehow I'd been
convinced that Mother Nature saw you through all the abuse to your
body....staying up all hours, smoking, drugs, sex, and rock and roll while
you were in the child bearing years. After that she cut you loose and let
those things have their way with you.
Ed's right about the habit part. When I was in the process of quitting I
realized there were all these absurd triggers that made me light up....I had
to have a cigarette when I got up to go to the bathroom, when the telephone
rang, before the car would start, as the final act of sex, the first thing
in the morning, etc. As it turned out there were only about three smokes a
day that I truly enjoyed. The rest were triggered by daily events.
Years after I had quit I would want a cigarette at inexplicable times that
came on me like a bolt out of the blue. I was able to laugh at the urge.
I had a good time while I was under Mother Nature's wing. And since she let
me go I've done a pretty good job of taking care of myself. It's all
working out.

I have noticed with myself and with many others that age 40 is the turning
point. Some of course began to deteriorate in their 30's, but by age 40 it
is pretty universal. You have to start taking care of yourself then or you
are doomed.
I think you are young to age 30. Then you are middle age to about 65. You
are old after that and you are damned old after age 80 from what I have been
able to see. I have never seen anyone in their 80's who did not appear frail
to me.

One thing is for sure, neither you nor I are true believers. But it is good
to know what they are like even so. Eric Hoffer will tell you.

I've learned that, too.
Oh Gawd, we're /both/ getting old!
And desperately grasping at the straws of
Peter Panisms doesn't work!
Arrgghhhhh!!!! I'm gonna drown in sumpthin' or other!!
But not yet.
Same for yerself.
Let's go blow up some ugly street art, and then
stop in at some Portuguese tapas place. Maybe
jokingly hit on the proprietor's daughter.
Until Chef Boy-Ar-Dee comes running outa the
kitchen at us like a doberman pinscher, wielding
a cleaver over his head, and yelling: "I keel you!
I keel you!"
cheers,

I am done with life. It why I don't care about anything anymore. I am not
depressed, just realistic. All I think about lately are funerals, hearses,
tombstones and cemeteries. The only thing that cheers me up is thinking
about what song I want sung at my final exit. I am leaning toward "La
Golondrina." What do you think?
I want a sad song even though I know that life will go on without me. Tom
Sherman will continue to write verbose accounts of the aerodynamic
advantages of recumbents over uprights even though I won't be here to
comment on them. I only regret that JimmyMac will have to find someone else
to stalk after I am gone. Truth to tell, he will never find anyone as Great
as Me to stalk.
This is the best epitaph I have ever been able to discover. What do you
think?
"Once I wasn't, then I was, now I ain't again."
