View Full Version : Lotto..why no climbers in support?

OK, so you know you've got the TdF favorite on your team, but you dont have
any climbers to help him when it counts. Why not go shopping for one? I
mean, it's only the TdF.

If Evans had a climber to help him today, he could have sat on that mans
wheel at a steady pace while the others played games. Anyone who's done any
climbing knows how much harder it is to follow attacks than to ride a
constant tempo. Evans was heroic today under very difficult circumstances.
He has earned the win, which I hope he will secure on Saturday. His team
has been largely absent. I feel for him.

CSC is a powerhouse. Sastre has been given every advantage, but will likely
lose anyway. Could be close, though. Seconds, maybe. LeMond/Fignon
anyone?

Popovych was supposed to be the man but he left his refrigerator at home.

I bet he (Evans) wishes he'd campaigned a bit harder to keep Horner on
the team.

It appears he left it at the Passo Stelvio training camp that Lotto had him do
before the race.

No, the problem is that Silence-Lotto can't afford to stock the fridge
anywhere near as well as Discovery Channel could.

With Discovery Channel
2005 12th on GC and White Jersey winner, 1 stage win
2006 24th on GC, 1 stage win
2007 8th on GC and 3rd on KOM, 2 top ten finishes

I don't know about that. I'd put it at even odds. Evans is better, but
Sastre has 1.5 minutes and there's that mythical power of the yellow
jersey.

Note!!

Last year at the tour, Stage 19, 55K ITT. Cadel beat Carlos by 2:04!!!!

The power of the Yellow versus the power to WANT the Yellow!!
Carlos has the benefit of going last.

He beat Carlos by 1:15 at the 29K ITT of Stage 8.

Evans has never demonstrated an indomitable will to win. Where was his
"WANT the Yellow!!" last year? It was nowhere to be found. He couldn't
catch Contador. Levi beat him by 51 seconds and came 8 seconds away
from taking 2nd.

Evans isn't Eddy Merckx. He's not even LANCE armstrong.

To me it's even odds.

Who does Sastre have to follow on CSC? Cancellara. Hmmm, interesting.

I agree.

Time trials in the last weeks of grand tours are not events where
everyone leaves it on the road. There are three classes of riders
that do:

- Riders looking for a stage win.
- Riders competing for a podium spot.
- Riders worried about the time cut.

There may be guys that are looking to move up a spot or two near
the top ten. But for the most part, guys just want to look good
and get it over with.

In the second TT last year, Evans was 1:50 away from yellow. Sastre
was in fourth place, 3:13 behind Levi and 4:12 behind Evans. He's
got 27 seconds on Zubeldia who is his only threat. Valverde is next
and he's 3:49 back.

So Sastre is keeping an eye on the guy in front of him. He really
had no reason to cough up a lung in that race, especially since
Zubeldia didn't go that fast. Evans did have a reason to leave it
all on the road, and he didn't deliver.

Zubeldia finished about 4 minutes back. And surprise! Sastre went
a little bit faster. Maybe he could have gone a lot faster, maybe
not. But he had no reason to.

I think the guys that are looking at last year's TT and projecting
it to this year are retards. The finish will be very close, but I
think Sastre will surprise people.

Keep whining assbag! Most racers would love to be as good as Cadel. He may
turn out to be the Zabel of GC. IF he wins you can kiss my ass!

It had nothing to do with fridge stocking as Popovych said that the mountain
training camp that his team had him do just before the Tour was bad for him.
Apparently, riding up the Stelvio a bunch of times can wear you out. Who knew?

More likely, Voigt and Gustov.
Cancellara is
A. Too strong
B. Starts too early
C. Will be allowed to run for stage win

Vuelta 2007, 22km a tired Evans only beat Sastre with 22 seconds. Evans
had 2 and 3 place within his reach.

Sastre and Vandevelde where equal.
