Under the IOC charter, all committees must be free of political

As a result the team of two rowers, two sprinters, one archer, one
weightlifter and one judo competitor cannot attend.

I can't believe you are trying to apply logic to the Olympic games. I
gave up in 1976 when about 20 African nations boycotted the Montreal
Olympics because New Zealand wasn't banned from the Olympic Games for
having their rugby team play in South Africa. Yes, rugby, as in the
sport which has not been an Olympic sport since 1936 (by the most
generous count). Just to say that the boycotts are just as irrational
as the IOC.
Also, the IOC has made giant steps away from total insanity (it's just
run of the mill now). Do you remember the "contagion" theory of
amateurism? Athletes or teams which competed in exhibitions against
professionals would themselves face a ban, the theory being that their
level could be raised playing against impure pros. That would have
amusing applications today, i.e., ban all TdF riders from the Olympics
because they had the benefit of competing against superhuman dopers
like Ricco. Who knows, maybe that's next....

Anybody think the IOC has been working hand in hand with the Chinese
government to control the Press, and keep a positive spin on things.
I wish all the bigtime news outlets and wire services would stage a
strike, and refuse coverage, but it aint gonna happen because they
only report on and criticize other folks moral choices, when it comes
to them, anything goes.
What if they had an Olympics and noone covered it?? That'd put a
little nick in the IOC's money tree, and maybe, adjust their corrupt
asses a bit.

In an interview with the South China Morning Post, IOC press
commission chairman Kevan Gosper apologised for inadvertently
misleading journalists over unfettered internet access.
"I'm not backing off what I said. There will be full, open and free
internet access during Games time to allow journalists to report on
the Olympics," he told the daily.
"But I have also been advised that some of the IOC officials had
negotiated with the Chinese that some sensitive sites would be
blocked."

The IOC and National Affiliates thereof heve been crooked ever since I
knew anything aout them.
The committees treat the Olympic funding as a personal Cash Cow and
there is little or no accountability for the expenditures!. Juan
Antonio Samaranch kept a 200 dollar a night apartment in switzerland
year round even though in later years it housed nothing much more than
whores and other hangers on who were provided to visitors from
National Associations and other "priviliged people" who needed free
booze, free booze and a stray piece of ass - male or female - take
your pick.
They are crooked from the word go and so is the UCI and its National
affiliates. The both sing off the same Hymn Sheet..
Currently they are in the shadow of the New World Order Brigade and
any otherwise independent decision is first cleared with the Powers
that Be. Regardless of the fact that they state they are
non-political, this is decidedly not the case.
It is a travesty that the few Iraqi athletes qualified to go will have
to stay home. I am currently spearheading a petition to all athletes
to stay home and have in fact met with some small success.
What I would like to see is Iran grant the Iraquis citizenship and
send them as part of the Iranian squads. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad might
just pull through for them yet.
There might be some conflict but not overly much as the Iranians are
quite successful in weight lifting and wrestling.

slashed priced by 50 percent as an incentive recently.

Yeah, I shouldn't be shocked given their history but it just amazes me
that people can do that. The level of hypocrisy, and hubris coming out
of the IOC is just stunning, but nothing new, as you point out.
I figured Davey would weigh in, and he was one of those caught in the
ridiculous "amateurism" scam.
How the hell, what's supposed to be a free and independent world
organization that claims to have some sort of moral standing, could
make that statement, in light of their current and past actions is
just mind boggling to me.
In the abstract, you know it happens, but then you get slapped in the

Oh, I just remembered that this exact thing already happened. When
Butch Reynolds challenged his doping suspension, it was ruled that he
could participate in the 1988 Olympic trials, but due to "contagion"
he had to run his 400m heat alone.

The only good thing the IOC ever did was to ban that fat useless piece
of ****, McBoggy, for life too.
But it's situational ethics. The IOC seems to have no qualms about
dealing with a brainless idiot who is the puppet of his
predecessor and who has the additional baggage of a lifetime
suspension tied to his ass.
The whole Olympic Follies are an eventwhose time has gone.

_Big_ money is made by even the judges in any competition where an
opinion or subjective judgement is called for as opposed to the winner
being apparent to all even if some modern photographic or timing aids
are required to assist in splitting close finishes. Like gymnastics,
dancing under water, skating, etc.
It all comes down to money.
Case in point, and today's quizz question:
Listen up.
Davey has a Doctor in Toronto (Kanada where it's Kold) who he knows
socially as well as professionally and whose husband was on the
Toronto Committee to Bring the Games to Toronto.
They had quite a lot of support and with **** Pound an influential IOC
Vice President, they thought they had it in the bag.
But on the last round of voting:
Guess who switched his vote and supported China??

"When China applied to host the Games they promised total press

As it turned out, the IOC reneged on the 1904 Olympics. At that time
Europeans viewed St. Louis as off the edge of the earth so few European
athletes showed up, especially in cycling. An additional disincentive
was that there were many Olympic cycling races spread over several
months. As a result, the unwashed Americans swept these events, taking
all medals.
The IOC then decided to nullify the cycling events and invented the
excuse that professional athletes had been allowed to compete, though
they never offered proof of this. As I recall they then held
pseudo-Olympic cycling events somewhere in Europe a couple of years
later to "fix" this alleged problem.

There's a series of books (more like rapidly published pamphlets)
about the 08 Olympics written by left wing "intellectuals". I glanced
through one of them called "Should the games be boycotted?" (I leave
it up to you to guess the answer) and it was full of profound comments
such as: "the athletes are all doped anyway". I would ordinarily say
that I hate self righteous intellectuals except that some might
consider me to be in that category. See for yourself:

Wow, reduced to 21.85 Euro for that? I'm split between the boycott
idea, and going and speaking out and raising hell, at least from the
press since the athletes are being gagged by their own federations who
are going along with the IOC.
It's been clear to me for ages that it's impossible to negotiate
anything with those who have no intention of honoring what they
negotiate, and we see it again here.
The rhetoric from the folks writing the book seems a bit over the
top, but in keeping with historical French thought, and the left
there.
If the IOC wasn't so hypocritical, and didn't invent some moral
pedestal for themselves, then I'd have no problem with most of their
actions.
For me all they need to do is come out and act like the World Cup,
admit they are putting on sporting spectales for profit, which is what
they are doing, and then most all of this garbage becomes mostly
irrelevant.

Well, I believe that the Olympics has already made most of the
progress you speak of, at least with respect to the athletes. They
finally made them a venue for the athletes to make a life for
themselves, whereas before it was their sacred trust to keep sport as
a honorable hobby.

Now let's see there were a couple of liars spouting off about how
there wouldn't be any press censorship at the 2008 Olympic Games
around four months ago.
They were Senior IOC members overseeing the games as I remember. Hmmm,
Kevan Gosper, a thoroughly nasty Piece of **** from OZ, and (Davey
Scratches his head) - Kevan Gosper and Hein Verbruggen wasn't it?
Kevan Gosper, chairman of the IOC's Press Commission no less, is
singing a different tune today and has fessed up to lying about the
censorship free games when what he really should have said was
that the "open Internet" extended only to sites that related to
"Olympic competitions", and even that is bull**** if one listens to
the whining of the reporters who are having no luck accessing even
non-sensitive sites. And it seems he's trying to blame the OZ Olympic
Committee for dumping him in the ****.
Verbruggen hasn't commented or "clarified" his lies of a few months
back.
One would hope that ducking as the **** hits the fan on this one will
be at least have been made somewhat more tolerable by the knowledge
that they are well rewarded for their efforts on behalf of the IOC
Life is tough at the top. Look at poor **** Pound who had to go back
to Canada and face the Canadian Olympic Committe and explain how come
he voted for Begin instead of Toronto. Davey just can't imagine why
any sane person would subject himself too that kind of abuse, not to
mention the loss of revenues to Stikeman-Elliott as long term clients
moved their business to competing firms in disgust. Still, there must
have been something that made it worth while.

Yeah they've made big strides there, but I think they had to. Just too
bad so many people got crunched by the moralistic fantasy that got
attached to sport. Especially reading stuff from around the turn of
the last century, and continuing for a couple of decades after that.
The British establishment in particular seemed wedded to that, as
Davey can well attest.
I know you wouldn't misunderstand my comment on the tradition of
French thought, but others might and I'd like to preempt that. I'm no
scholar of it, but it's impossible to understand the US, and western
world today without having some working knowledge of the subject.
I find the booklet, and that current to be rooted in the tradition of
"Liberté, égalité, fraternité" which underlies most of the best of
western thought.

It's _their_ Olympics. They own the name and the sign.
They choose where it will be held, who gets in, and what
the rules are. Thousands fall over themselves and others
running to get in. If the IOC says "Shut yer gob." the
people who begged to get in must shut their gob.

Got no problem with that. Got a huge problem with the lies, hypocrisy
and double and triple standards.
It's just too bad the mainstream press does such a ****ty job with
pressing them hard on these issues. If you follo the NBA at all, or
even the news it's amazing to contrast the way the press as a whole
went after the NE Patriots in football, and how they hammered at it
for months, and the paper and reporter who started it finally had to
admit that they hd NO evidence at all to support their accusations,
and subsequent witch hunt, but we've got an NBA ref going to jail for
18 months for gambling/fixing games who swears, and has sworn under
oath that other league officials are involved in the samwe activities.
They've got his phone records that show an incredibly questionable
pattern that matches, or exceeds the pattern to those also convicted,
and noone is digging at all because "David Stern is a good guy, and
good to the press."
How the hell can you respect any of them, or what they do, or report?
Malcom Forbes I could at least respect. He called his motorcycle
"Capitalist tool", and his MC club the "Capitalist tools". No lies, no
BS.
